I had lunch today on the lake-
front at PCYC with the inten-
tion of writing this month's jib
sheet article. My friend Gary
just arrived from Colorado so
that ends this initial attempt at
completing this article, al-
though he is reminding me of
some of our past PCYC memo-
ries. The first paragraph is the
same as last month's. The
weather is perfect, the lake is
calm, the water is clear, the
sandbars stretch out into the
lake, the sky is blue, and the
lake color is an aqua blue. With
the decrease in rain this sum-
mer, we didn't get the fertilizer
runoff and consequently, we
have not had an algae bloom
clogging the lake. The only
difference this month is there is
a small plane (Citabria) circling
overhead instead of a WWII
variety from the Liberty Air Mu-
seum. However, the seasonal
changes are evident. It is
cooler today than last month,
the evenings are cooler, the
days are shorter, there is less
activity at the pool with some
schools and colleges starting
early, the water levels are con-
tinuing to lower even without
southerly winds, the vegeta-
bles are being harvested from
Ed Heinsen's garden, and you
can hear the Port Clinton High
School band practicing while
sitting on the deck at the Club.
Finally, the National Matches
are over at Camp Perry and I
concede victory to John Folger
in our personal completion in
the Grand Match.
The Pool-
The usage was way up this
year with the warm weather.
We will continue to make re-
pairs to cracks and leaks this
fall. I was asking some older
members if they remember or
have pictures of its construc-
tion. I was reminded that it was
constructed almost half a cen-
tury ago and information is
hard to come by. Its construc-
tion was controversial because
of the cost and many thought
no one would use the pool with
the lake being so close. I re-
member the wrist bands mem-
bers had to purchase in order
to use to pool. It certainly has
been a nice addition to the
club.
Boaters-
Remember we have extreme
fluctuations in water levels in
the fall sometimes over five
feet. Keep your dock lines long
so that your boat does not end
up hanging by its cleats. You
can damage your boat, your
neighbors boat, and the docks.
One fall a wooden Lyman set-
tled onto the bottom and got
stuck. When the wind shifted
and the water rose the boat
was stuck and filled with water
coming in over the sides.
Battle-of-Lake-Erie Bicenten-
nial
The celebration has begun.
Talk to Dave Mehl or John
Schaffner on how you can par-
ticipate individually in the fes-
tivities. Dave Mehl and I are
Fleet Members and plan on
being one of the 1000 personal
watercraft to join the American
Fleet for the reenactment next
September. It will be quite a
party!!
Cigarette Grant
The grant study goes on.
Thanks to the smokers who
use the cigarette receptacles,
except those who also put their
wrappers into the containers
and start fires. We would have
an even bigger mess than we
have now if not for your consid-
eration.
Gotta have a PCYC memory
On another late night return
from Frosty's, the wind picked
up from the North which was
fine until we tried to dock in the
inner lagoon with a 40 knot
wind. Our family always had
between an 18 to 24 foot in-
board/outboard which meant
maneuvering was simple. So
my policy to my crew is "do not
touch the dock until the boat
comes to a complete stop."
Well, an over zealous crew
member jumped to the bow of
the boat and grabbed the first
riser at the end of the dock as
we approached. I now have no
control with him holding tena-
ciously to the riser for dear life.
I had to put the boat in full re-
verse in order to avoid the boat
next to me as the North wind
took control of my stern. It was
an interesting sight seeing his
body stretched horizontally
over the water with his hands
on the riser and the tip of his
feet on the bow of my boat. He
soon gracefully splashed into
the water. I was able to turn
the boat into the wind before
smashing into the steel sheet-
ing at the South end of the la-
goon and return to the dock.
He was actually much more
helpful on the dock than he
was on the boat.

As August slips into the sunset we look forward to September Cruise
Out events.
On Sunday, September 2, we will have our dinghy/small boat poker run beginning with Bloody Marys on the deck at 10:00 a.m. followed by a visit to Bringmans on the Portage River, Lagoon Saloon, The Bait Shop, and end up on the beach at
PCYC for the final card draw.
We will then have our final cruise out of the season on September 21-23
rd ,
at Miller Marina at Put In Bay. We will again have our scavenger hunt
among the usual activities.
I have enjoyed being the Fleet Cap-tain of Power for the past 2 years for PCYC as it has been a very reward-ing experience. I look forward to as-sisting my successor get off on the right foot for planning next years ac-
tivities.
Sincerely,

Thoughts About September
August was a busy month for PCYC power boaters. On August 3-5
th, we
had a Cruise Out to Kelley’s Island Seaway Marina. We had 9 boats and 22 people attend. Apparently due to overbooking by the marina, on Sat-urday morning several of our boats were asked to raft off 3 deep to ac-commodate several more boats from other groups coming in during the day. Unfortunately this caused some chaos and 5 of the 9 boats departed
Seaway for other loca-
tions.
Secondly, we were scheduled to spend a day on Rattlesnake Is-land on Thursday, Au-gust 9
th. However, due
to bad weather, we had to cancel the 18 boats and 100+ people who had signed up to go to Rattlesnake. David Gresh, Rattlesnake Island manager, had a cancellation and of-fered Tuesday, August 14
th, as an al-
ternate date. We ended up with 6 boats and 35 people attending and
