P.O. Box 127, Port Clinton, OH 419.734.2424 www.portclintonyachtclub.com Founded in 1906 May 2010 CONCEPT OF A WORKING CLUB A great amount of work was completed during the April 18th work party. Over seventy-five PCYC members, spouses, and their families contributed many man hours getting the facilities freshened up and ready for the upcoming season. The board and flag thanks you all for your efforts and donations of equipment for use during the work party. The flower committee got off to a great start preparing for the spring flowering. Watch again for “different” plant varieties in some of the areas. RC Todd Bickley and his wife, Bobbi served up a wonderful lunch that was enjoyed by all attending. Large projects are taking place around the club. Stone is being placed along the north shore road to protect our new paved drive. We may inconvenience some of you as we proceed but it is necessary. Watch for dockside pedestal installation in early May as well. This will cause the electric and water to be off for a couple days. Don’t load up your refrigerators yet unless they can operate off the 12 volt system. This project will replace ten of the pedestals from dock 103 to dock 121. We plan to do the work with volunteer help and our caretaker Eric and his assistant Nick Ciacelli. It has come to our attention that some of our newer members aren’t aware of the volunteer nature of PCYC. We only have two full time people. They are the head bartender and the caretaker/dockmaster. We have three part time bartenders and the caretaker has a part time assistant. The club manager position is part time as well. That’s it. During the pool season we have numerous guards and attendants on staff as well as the learn-to-sail coaches. Every member is responsible to keep the grounds, lagoon, docks, bar and lounge, deck, kids room, pool and playground as they found it or bet- ter. The PCYC “working club ethic” has been operating for over one hundred years and has served us well. The flower committee is hard at work and you will begin to notice the fruits of their labor during the month. Daffodils and tulips have come and gone, but much more is coming. Fred Pachasa and his charges began planning last summer and new mounds will be placed on either side of the entrance pillars with plants and redbud trees. New sand in the horseshoe pits came from the pool filter sand replacement. Over four thousand pounds of sand had to be removed and replaced. This will help the flow through the filter and improve water clarity. In order to better utilize the lagoon for dockage, we have moved the jet ski docks throughout the lagoon. Dockage chair, Phillip Bolte will get with each renter to confirm your location. We will be full again this year and some new members will be placed temporarily on the front wall as we have done in the past. This causes our visiting boaters to be limited on space, but the priority has to be placed on our members and their need for space. We have a severe supply/demand issue when it comes to docks and we ask that any member who will not be using his dock for any reason to contact Eric so we can use it even if it is for a short time. This also applies to weekend trips and vacations. Participation has grown throughout the month of April at our Friday night events. The new bar in the ballroom is beginning to serve as an overflow location and we are considering adding some stools for temporary seating. Stop by and enjoy the fun at your club with family and friends. It is the season of renewal. Commodore Mike Towning SPRING HAS ARRIVED Spring is definitely here as the grass is now green and growing, the daffo- dils are up, the marina is starting to fill up, the pool cover has been removed, the seagulls are nesting, and the basketball and hockey playoffs have finally started. Another sign of spring is the work party, which was held on April 18, with over seventy-five members working to get the grounds and clubhouse ready for summer. Thank you to those who were able to attend as well as donate equipment for the day to complete a number of projects. The cover is off the pool, the lifeguards and attendants have been hired and the pool committee has been working hard to get the pool ready for the 2010 swimming season, which officially starts on Saturday, May 29. The pool will be open through Memorial Day (May 31) and then for the balance of the season beginning June 4. The pool hours will be the same as last year, Monday – Thursday 12:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M., Friday 12:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M., Saturday 11:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M., and Sunday 11:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. The pool will also be open one hour prior to the times shown above for adult exercise. If not familiar with the rules, please review the pool rules and policies as listed in the PCYC Yearbook. Any suggestions or ideas for the pool can be submitted to the committee, which are the Stines, Zeitzheims, and Snyders. As an update on the ceiling project, the Board has accepted the proposal from J & B Acoustical, Inc. for the grid and tile installation. The tile, to be acquired from USG, is a Sandrift Panel in white, which has a high moisture, heat, and anti-microbial rating. The ceiling and grid system will carry a 30-year warranty. As previously noted, the project is scheduled to be completed in June. Eric the Caretaker and Dockage Chairman Phil Bolte, with assistance from Nick Ciacelli, have been working hard to get the marina ready for the 2010 season. The metal docks have been painted and most of the risers have been leveled and painted. As you bring your boat to the marina, please contact Eric to let him know your are in and also, check on your risers to make sure they are properly secured to your dock. On your next visit to the Club, stop in the ballroom and check out the new bar that Eric constructed over the winter. The cost was minimal as the wood was donated. Eric has reported that the spraying of the cottony maple scale insect was completed on April 1. Eric attended a Wildlife Control Workshop on March 31, which was sponsored by OSU Extension and the Clean Marinas Program. With the sunshine and warmer weather, we will begin to see more mem- bers and children on the grounds. Please be patient and watch your speed when driving. Rear Commodore Todd Bickley KICKING THE SEASON OFF I am writing this on the 15th of April, due date for the May Jibsheet. It is going to be a record setting day in terms of tem- perature, and it surely does get the juices flowing about getting out on the boat and using our beautiful lake, and its many venues, along with being around the club and seeing everyone enjoying themselves. A few boats went into the marina very early, and rumor has it that one made a trip to Kelly’s Island through the ice still floating on the top of water. Now that is impressive. Many more boats are starting to arrive in our PCYC Marina and the grounds are looking very good for this time of year. Of course that is because the weather has been excellent this past month. On the 11th of April, we kicked off the (semi) cruise-out schedule with a trip on the Miller Ferry to PIB and the traditional illuminating of the “Whiskey Light” at the Roundhouse. 35 attend- ed the event in 2009 and that was surpassed this year as over 60 members and friends visited island and kicked off the season with a bang. I missed the event due to having to watch my daughter play softball. I am sure that Cyndi and I felt better on Monday than those who were in attendance. I didn’t get a text until way late in the day and by the spelling in the text (which usually has to be deciphered depending on the user) wasn’t all that hard to figure out. It surely sounds like it was a successful event again this year. We do have 2 cruise-outs scheduled for the month of May. The first one is scheduled for a one day and overnight stay at The N’or Easter Club on May 22nd. If you are going to stay on Friday night as well, you will need to contact the club in advance. The second cruise is a small boat river-cruise to the Lagoon Saloon on May 30th. We should be making our way up the river at around 11:00 AM. Hope to see you on the water. “When the inventor of the drawing board messed up, what did he go back to?” Bob Monkhouse, Guardian 29 – 2003 (online edition) FCoP Gregg Hedden SAILING SUMMER SCHEDULE Jr. Sailing Fundraiser - Perch/Walley/Home made Lobster Bisque/Coleslaw A special thanks goes out to Jim and PC Denny Bergman and their buddies for their help with the PCYC Jr. Sail Perch/Walley/Home made Lobster Bisque/ Coleslaw dinner.
