Biographical sketch Prof. John Herbert (Jock) Galloway is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto. He received his B.A. from McGill University (1960), M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley (1961), and PhD from the University of London (1965). His primary area of research is historical geography of Brazil and the Caribbean, and historical geography of the sugar cane industry. He served as editor of the Canadian Geographer and sat on the editorial board of the Journal of Historical Geography. He won the 1999 Outstanding Teaching Award in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and the 2002 Award For Scholarly Distinction In Geography from the Canadian Association of Geographers.

Scope and content

1958-2012 [predominant 1990-2010] 1.77 m of textual records Fonds consists of records relating to Prof. Jock Galloway's education, teaching, research and publishing activity. The material is focused primarily on research and writing on various historical aspects of the sugar industry including the role played by the railway in the staple’s transportation and trade. Also included is research on the Department of Geography and Bill Birch, as well as writing produced as part his post-graduate studies focused on the plantation economy of Barbados and the historical geography of Pernambuco, Brazil. Records include extensive notes, correspondence, drafts, reprints, theses, and teaching material. Accessions: B2016-0006, B2016-0018 Boxes: B2016-0006/001-/002, B2016-0018/001- /012 Access: Open Arrangement: Series 1 and 2 are arranged loosely by subject and geographical region preserving the original organization in which the material was received. Series 3-5 were given an imposed order as no consistent original order could be identified. Languages: English Custodial history: Material in the J.H. Galloway fonds was transferred to the University of Toronto Archives and Records Management Services by the donor, however material for transfer was selected by a colleague of Prof. Galloway’s.

Series 2: Research material 1884-2012 1.07m of textual records Date note: Dates reflects those of original publication, files were copied and collected between ca. 1980 and 2012 Series consists of material generated from Dr. Galloway’s research activity related to the history of the sugar industry. Research material is focused on the Caribbean and Brazil, however the records also cover regions internationally. Records in accession B2016-0006 focus primarily on Prof. Galloway’s unpublished second book covering the role of railroads in the transport of sugar. Files include research notes, correspondence, and annotated reprints. Some of the notes were generated from Dr. Galloway’s archival research in Portugal, Canada and the US (Florida).
