PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE What a beautiful time of the year. Plants are growing and the weather is getting warmer. Each day is new, clean and unused. Jewish Residents of Leisure World can look forward to the second annual Davening and Deli Dinner event on June 7 and the Meet and Greet open house on August 18. Please plan to attend the Meet and Greet and bring a friend with you. This event is open to members and potential members. One group of members whom I want to thank are the volunteers who give so much of their time and attention to making JRLW events so wonderful. There are so many residents who volunteer that I have listed volunteers for religious services as a separate list in the newsletter. Please let me know if you have volunteered and your name is missing. I will have more in the future. It will take some time, but I plan to call each volunteer personally and thank them as the summer progresses. One person who has been a great help to JRLW and to me for many years is Natalie Brodsky. Natalie supervised the Kiddush on Saturdays for nine years and gave up so many Saturday mornings to make sure she and her group had all the food perfect for the congregation. Thank you, Natalie, for all your hard work; we appreciate it. 8I was very much taken with that duet, and during my tenure at another congregation, sometime around 1981, I thought it might be a nice idea to add that duet to the service. One of the tenors in the choir wasa first-ratemusician,and I thought the twoofuscoulddotheduetwell.Unabletofindthesheetmusic to the duet, I transcribed it onto music staff paper and gave him a copy. He learned his part quickly and we incorporated the duet into the Erev Yom Kippur service. He sang the tenor part and I sang the baritone part. The congregation loved it and we sang it every year until I moved on to serve another congregation.I got a call in early 2019 from a member of this previous congregation, askingmeifI’dliketoparticipateinanApril program called “Birth of a Shul.” The program woulddiscussthecongregation’sdevelopmentfromits earliest days in 1966. I would be on a panel to talk about memories I had during my time there, and I would be invited to sing during the Shabbat morning service. I agreed to be part of the program. My duet partner of years ago, now the cantor for this congregation, wrotemeandaskedwhat I’d like tosing. I told him that my best memory of singing with him was this duet from YAALE. He wrote back saying, “IstillhavethesheetmusicandIthinkIcanfindit.”Sure enough, on the morning of the “Birth of a Shul” program, he showed me the sheet music I had hand written some 38 years ago. I brought my pitch pipe to get the correct starting note and we went through the duet ONCE. It was as if we had sung it regularly for years. We sang the YAALE duet again to end the entire program, and it went really well. As I walked out, a young woman came up to me and said, “that was really beautiful – it brought tears to my eyes.” Thiswoman’sreactionremindedmeofmybubbe’sreaction all those years ago. So, even though Yossele Rosenblatt is of blessed memory, he lives on through hisrecordings.Ifyou’dliketoheartheYA-ALEduet,it is available on YouTube. Plug “YAALE by Cantor Joseph Rosenblatt YouTube” into your browser. You should see a record with a blue label sitting on a turntable. The duet starts at 1:48 of the recording. That’s the thing about Jewish music – it isEMOTIONAL. Many of us can remember where we were when we learned the songs of the service, and if there are multiple melodies for prayers, and many prayers DO have multiple melodies, which one(s) mean the most to us. It is incumbent on cantors to keep this music alive by including it in our services. I’llcontinue todomypart.Hopefully, othercantorswill do the same.

CANTOR’S CORNER Michael Kravitz

On the 25th of Sivan, 5693 (June 19, 1933) the voice of one of the greatest cantors who ever lived was silenced. That cantor, whose voice was silenced, was Yossele Rosenblatt. He died in Jerusalem and was only 51 at the time of his death some 86 years ago. Thankfully, he was a prolific recording artist, making a number of 78 rpm discs for both RCA and Columbia. Many of his recordings were made during the electrical recording age, so the fidelityis quite good compared to the sound of recordings made during the recording horn era of artists such as Enrico Caruso. As a young, child I used to spend Sundays at the home of my bubbe and zayde. My Aunt Elizabeth, who lived with them, had a 78 rpm record player with a nice selection of records which she would let me play. One album was a 3-record set of 78s with selections of Yossele Rosenblatt. I had no idea what they were, but I put one on the turntable and began to listen. It was a recording of “Rachem Naw (Have mercy)” and it took 2 sides to play the entire piece. There was an orchestral beginning and then Rosenblatt’stenorvoicefilledtheroom.Mybubbehadbeen in the kitchen, and all of a sudden she started to CRY. When I asked her what was wrong, she said that the power of his singing and the beauty of his voice really affected her. I never forgot that moment, and as I purchased quality sound equipment from money I earned as a newspaper boy in 1960, some ofmyfirst lpacquisitionswereYosseleRosenblattcompilations of his old 78 rpm recordings. Around 1969 I acquired a 3-record set called THE ART OF THE CANTOR that was issued on RCA Red Seal records. It included vintage recordings of Moshe Koussevitsky, Samuel Vigoda and Yossele Rosenblatt. I was particularly intrigued by a Rosenblatt recording made on February 3, 1927. It was a recording of the Erev Yom Kippur hymn YAALE.Therecordingonlycontained thefirstpartof YAALE, but the latter part was a duet between Yossele and his son Henry. Henry had hoped to become an opera singer and performed under the name “Paul Dennis” so that any musical success he had would be based on his own merits and not becausehewasYosseleRosenblatt’sson.Whilethesuccess he had hoped for eluded him, Henry was good enough to be hired by Arturo Toscanini for a minorroleintheNBCRadiobroadcastofVerdi’sLATRAVIATA.

IN MY OPINIONBernice Cohen

SixmonthsafterthehorrificattackonthePittsburghSynagogue, another shooting, another synagogue attacked.

Nothing which I could write can express my opinion about guns better than this article which was taken from the Washington Post, written the day after another shooting.

‘OnthefinaldayofamajorJewishholiday, atasynagogue near San Diego, a 19-year-old man with an assault rifle and apparent anti-Semitic views opened fire, leaving one dead and three injured, authorities said.

Rabbi Yonah Fradkin, executive director of Chabad of SanDiegoCounty, identified Lori Kaye, 60, ofPoway as the woman who was killed, according to the Associated Press. Fradkin said those injured in the Passover shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue were Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, Almog Peretz, 34, and an 8-year-old, Noya Dahan.

“In the face of senseless hate, we commit to live proudly as Jews in this glorious country,” Fradkin said in a statement. “We strongly believe that love is exponentially more powerful than hate. We are deeply shaken by the loss of a true woman of valor, Lori Kaye, who lost her life solely for living as a Jew.”

Saturday’sshooting inPowaycamesixmonthsafterthemassacreatPittsburgh’soldestsynagogue,Tree of Life, where an armed shooter killed 11 people and injured six others.

In an apparent manifesto posted online, the alleged shooter drew inspiration for his attack from that tragedy as well as the mosques shootings in NewZealandinMarch.’

We mourn the death of Lori Kaye. We pray for the rapid recovery of those injured in this senseless attack. And we add one more reason to ban possession of assault rifles by civilians.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEEWe’reexcitedaboutbeingchosenasco-chairsofthenewMembershipCommitteeofJRLW.Aswe’resure you know, JRLW is the umbrella organization for all the Jewish groups of Leisure World – we are the voice of the Jewish community here. As such, we really want to represent the residents and include all who wish to join with us. Therefore, we would like to increase our membership considerably. We know that there are Jewish people who are not affiliated with our organization but we hope that, with the help of all of us, they will choose to become members Dues are very reasonable and we have lots to offer in terms of programs, activities, classes, and, of course, religious services. On August 18, from 2-4 pm, we are going to have a “Meet and Greet” in the Activities Room of Clubhouse II. This get together is for current members of JRLW, but especially for prospective members so that they can get to know us. Please mark your calendar for that date – it will be lots of fun with refreshments and door prizes. We encourage you to bring friends from the community who are not associated with JRLW so that we can talk to them about joining us.We have thought about having “Mutual Mentors” who could welcome and deliver membership materials tonewJewishresidentsofourcommunity. We’relooking for volunteers so that we can be proactive in every mutual in Leisure World. This enchanting documentary looks beyond the sublime musician, to see the polio survivor whose parents emigrated from Poland to Israel, the young man who struggled to be taken seriously as a music student when schools saw only is disability. ON THE LIGHTER SIDEAn old gent was backing his Rolls-Royce into the as available parking space when a young guy in a brand new sports car zips into the spot.

The young driver jumps out of his car and says, “Sorry old boy, but you have to be young and smart to do that.”

The old man ignores the snide remark and keeps reversing until his Rolls crushes the back of the sports car into an unrecognizable mess.

“Sorry son, but you have to be old and rich to do that!”

The Women’s Shabbat Committee. Janet Lazar,Joan Engleman, Chair, Linda Star and Marcia Hahn.

Kitty Atkin Named JRLW Woman of The Year.

SHAVUOTShavout is a Jewish holiday that takes place seven weeks after Passover. The word Shavuot means “weeks.” This name comes from the Hebrew Bible which refers to the observance as the “Feast of Weeks.” In biblical timestheholidaycelebratedthespringharvest.InlatertimestheholidayalsocametocommemorateGod’sgivingoftheTorah,thefirstfivebooksoftheBible,totheJewishpeople.In biblical times Shavuot served as an occasion to thank God for the spring crops. It coincided with the end of the barley harvest and the beginning of the wheat harvest. On Shavuot worshipers gave the priests at the TempleinJerusalemtwoloavesofbread, madefromtheirfinestspringwheat, tooffertoGodinaritualofthanksgiving.PeoplealsoexpressedgratitudeforthebountyoftheearthbyofferingGodthefirstfruitsofthe harvest. Shavuot was one of three Jewish agricultural festivals that required the faithful to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. and the dispersion of the Jewish people, the holiday could no longer be honored in the same way. So, the rabbis turned to Jewish scripture and, after years of study, gleaned from it another interpretation of the festival. They realized that the ancient Israelites arrived at Sinai seven weeks after escaping from Egypt. Once there, Moses climbed Mount Sinai and received the Ten Commandments from God. Afterwards God gave Moses other teachings contained in the Torah. Since the ancient Jewish people had already established the Passover festival, it made sense that any festival occurring seven weeks later must commemorate the giving of the Torah.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS1. I am the Lord your God. 6. You shall not murder.2. You shall have no gods before me 7. You shall not commit adultery.3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 8. You shall not steal.4. Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. 9. You shall not bear false witness. 5.Honoryourfatherandmother. 10.Youshallnotcovetyourneighbor’shouse.

Jewish Residents of Leisure World Silver Spring, Maryland

March 2011, Adar 1 - Adar 2, 5771 Newsletter Editor: Bernice F. Cohen 301-598-0192 Website: http://www.jrlw.org

The Rabbi and his wife were assigned to their first Congregation to reopen a shul in Brooklyn. They arrived in February, excited about their opportunities. When they saw the Shul it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time for the Purim Service. They worked hard , repairing, plastering, painting, etc. They were ahead of schedule when a severe snowstorm hit the area. After the storm the Rabbi went to the Shul and his heart sank when he saw all the damage the storm had done to the building. A large area of plaster had fallen off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit. The Rabbi cleaned up the mess on the floor and headed home. On the way home he passed a flea market and stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful handmade crocheted tablecloth with a Mogen David embroidered in the center of the tablecloth. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the wall where the plaster had fallen off. He purchased the tablecloth. (Article continued on page 8)
