PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I know why Passover always comes in the Spring. Back in the days of the Exodus, the women all got together and decided that since they had to make the kitchen Kosher for Passover, they might as well scrub the whole house and get rid of that nasty sand. So, Spring Cleaning was born. Seriously though, isn’t this a good time for all of us to take the time to shake off the Winter’s cold blasts and meet a season of warm weather, flowers bursting thru the earth, trees bringing new leaves and taking advantage of the programs that are planned for JRLW. I urge you to keep your JRLW newsletter handy and join in our programs. (We won’t have to worry about the snow keeping us locked up in our homes.) I know that some of you have problems receiving the newsletter. I want to remind you that there are copies of the newsletter in the E & R office in Clubhouse I. You are welcome to pick one up there if the Post Office misses you. Please remember to attend our annual JRLW meeting which will be held on Wednesday, April 17. The meeting will be in Clubhouse I at 7:00 pm. Happy Springtime and a Sweet Passover. The Rabbi and his wife were assigned to their first Congregation to reopen a shul in Brooklyn. They arrived in February, excited about their opportunities. When they saw the Shul it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time for the Purim Service. They worked hard , repairing, plastering, painting, etc. They were ahead of schedule when a severe snowstorm hit the area. After the storm the Rabbi went to the Shul and his heart sank when he saw all the damage the storm had done to the building. A large area of plaster had fallen off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit. The Rabbi cleaned up the mess on the floor and headed home. On the way home he passed a flea market and stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful handmade crocheted tablecloth with a Mogen David embroidered in the center of the tablecloth. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the wall where the plaster had fallen off. He purchased the tablecloth. (Article continued on page 8)

CANTOR’S CORNERMichael Kravitz

As you all know, Pesach (Passover) is approaching and we will celebrate the first seder on Friday evening, April 19. While each of us has our Pesach customs, some are more unusual than others. I thought I’d share excerpts of the writings of Joseph A. Joel in his essay PASSOVER IN A UNION CAMP: A REMINISCENCE OF THE CIVIL WAR. It is one of the most unique descriptions I’ve ever read. Joel beautifully describes the celebration of an 1862 seder in mountainous West Virginia.

“Being apprised of the approaching Feast of Passover, twenty of my comrades and co-religionists belonging to the Regiment united in a request to our commanding officer for relief from duty, in order that we might keep the holidays, which he readily acceded to. The first point was gained, and, as the Paymaster had lately visited the Regiment, he had left us plenty of greenbacks.

Our next business was to find some suitable person to proceed to Cincinnati, Ohio, to buy us matzos. Our sutler (a civilian who sells provisions to soldiers), being a co-religionist and going home to that city, readily undertook to send them. We were anxiously awaiting to receive our matzos, and about the middle of the morning of Erev Pesach, a supply train arrived in camp, and to our delight – seven barrels of matzos. On opening them, we were surprised and pleased to find that our thoughtful sutler had enclosed two Hagodahs and prayer books. We were now able to keep the seder nights if we could only obtain the other requisites for that occasion.

We held a consultation and decided to send parties to forage in the country while a party stayed to build a log hut for the services. About the middle of the afternoon, the foragers arrived, having been quite successful. We obtained two kegs of cider, a lamb, several chickens and some eggs. Horseradish or parsley we could not obtain, but in lieu, we found a weed, whose bitterness, I apprehend, exceeded anything our ancestors “enjoyed.” We were still in a great quandary; we were like the man who drew the elephant in the lottery. We had the lamb, but did not know what part was to represent it at the table; but,

Yankee ingenuity prevailed, and it was decided to cook the whole and put it on the table; then, we could dine off it and be sure we had the right part. The necessities for the charoses we could not obtain, so we got a brick which, rather hard to digest, reminded us, by looking at it, for what purpose it was intended.

At dark, we had all prepared and were ready to commence the service. There being no chazzan present, I was selected to read the services, which I commenced by asking the blessing of the Almighty on the food before us and to preserve our lives from danger. The ceremonies were passing off very nicely until we arrived at the part where the bitter herb was to be taken. We all had a large portion of the herb ready to eat at the moment I said the blessing; each ate his portion, when horrors! What a scene ensued in our little congregation it is impossible for my pen to describe.

The herb was very bitter and very fiery like cayenne pepper, and excited our thirst to such a degree that we forgot the law authorizing us to drink only four cups, and the consequence was to drink up all the cider. Those who drank the more freely became more excited, and one thought he was Moses, another Aaron, and one had the audacity to call himself a pharaoh. The consequence was a skirmish with nobody hurt – only Moses, Aaron and Pharaoh had to be carried to the camp, and there left in the arms of Morpheus. This slight incident did not take away our appetite, and, after doing justice to our lamb, chicken and eggs, we resumed the second portion of the service without anything occurring worthy of note.

Since then, a number of my colleagues have fallen in battle in defending the flag they volunteered to protect with their lives. I have, myself, received a number of wounds all but mortal, but there is no occasion in my life that gives me more pleasure and satisfaction than when I remember the celebration of Passover of 1862.”

Chag sameach to you all.

COME TO ISRAEL! COME HOME!

When we gather for the Na’Amat USA Convention in Tel Aviv from November 4-11, 2019, and you sing Hatikvah with fervor, you will be adding your voices to those of our Israeli Na’Amat members who are tirelessly working for the well-being of children and families, elevate the status of women, and domestic violence, improve workplace conditions and promote peace in the Middle East.

Israel would not be what it is today without its women. Since 1928 when Golda Meir was elected National Secretary of Moetzet HaPoalot (now Na’Amat), the voices of women have never been stronger.

This past year, we opened a new Day Care Center in Tel Aviv in the name of Golda Meir - “Maon Golda.

Here in Leisure World at our March 6th general meeting our members thoroughly enjoyed the interesting and stimulating program conducted by Jerry Cohen, Moderator of the Jewish Discussion Group.

Flyers are on the way announcing plans for our annual Spiritual Adoption Luncheon scheduled for April 10, to be held in the Clubhouse I Ballroom. Our special guest speaker is Bob Levy. Our next big event is our annual Donor Luncheon. This year it will be held on May 8 at the Argyle Country Club.

Do you need a Mitzvah Card? Call Lenore Kalen at 301 922 4348. Mail your checks to Lenore at 15100 Interlachen Dr., Apt. 616, Silver Spring, Md. 20906.

Our Travel Committee is considering a trip to hear THE CAPITOL STEPS sometime this summer. More info will be coming your way when plans are finalized.

Na’Amat members raise money for many worthwhile causes to support service and educational programs for women and children in Israel. Do your part! Join Na’Amat.

HADASSAHBarbara Eisen

The Hadassah Judaic Studies group will meet on Monday, April 15, 1:30 pm, at Leisure World Clubhouse I. The topic, just in time for Passover, will be the Haggadah. The discussion will be led by Peri Schuyler.Given that the Haggadah is so completely integral to conducting the Passover Seder, how much do we really know about it? How did it come about? When was it first compiled? And where? And by whom? And what does it mean? Are there different Haggadahs for Orthodox, Conservative and Reform? For Ashkenazi and Sephardim? How was the content determined and from where did it derive? As Jews, we’re never

without questions, and, of course, it wouldn’t be Passover without asking, “Why”?Please join us to learn more about Haggadah traditions from the Sarajevo to the Maxwell House. Bring a Haggadah of your own and add your tradition to the mix. All are welcome. For questions or more information, please contact: Peri Schuyler ([email protected]) or (301-869-2968) or Marcia Elbrand (216-496-6633) or Shari Goldstein (240-293-6442) or Naomi Kline (240-669-7683).On Wednesday, April 24, at 7:00 pm, in Clubhouse I, Jodi Lyons will speak on “Brain Health As You Age: A Guide to Maintenance and Prevention.” She will share with us useful, achievable actions we can take to reduce our risk of brain function decline and will describe important tools in separating myth from reality. JEWISH WAR VETERANSFred Shapiro

The Charles Krieger Jewish War Veterans, Post 567, will hold its next brunch Sunday, April 14, in the Crystal Ballroom in Clubhouse I, at 10:15 am. The brunch will feature entertainment by Voices of Vets, Inc., organized and led by Kassie Sandacz. She will be joined by musicians Lauren and Todd.

Voices of Vets was organized by Kassie after a teacher, Colonel William P. Holmes, suggested that she visit Charlotte Hall Veterans Home to sing for the veterans. At eighteen, that wasn’t exactly a venue that she had a vision for. However, a few years later she visited Charlotte Hall on July 4, 2016, to sing for the veterans for what she thought would be a “one-time” performance. However, after that performance, she was able to experience the effect that the music had on the veterans and then proceeded to bring together musicians to form Voices of Vets, Inc.

Music therapy is rapidly becoming an integral part of helping many elderly and dementia patients. Specifically, hearing music from an earlier time has a positive impact on them. One song, in particular, “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” is always a favorite, as she is able to interact with the residents by handing them flowers and offering to let them sing into the microphone. Some residents harmonize with the group. Once the music starts - it is magical! The residents lift their heads, tap their feet and even sing along.

The goal of Voices of Vets is to visit all the veteran homes in the U.S. They have toured Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, D.C. and Maryland. In June, they will visit the veteran homes in Florida. You can check out Voices of Vets, Inc. for yourself to see the many smiles and good times that they share with the veterans.

The cost of the buffet menu consisting of eggs, tuna fish, lox, bagels, salad, coffee, Danish and more, plus an abundance of camaraderie is $14 per person. Your reservation check, made payable to JWV 567, should be mailed by April 8, to Jerry Cohen, 3330 N. Leisure

LEISURE WORLD PARTICIPATES IN GOOD DEEDS DAY TECH DAY

WITH STUDENTS; DONATIONS TO MANNA

Fred Shapiro

Leisure World joins the Greater Washington community on April 7, participating in Good Deeds Day. The main feature, as in previous years, will be the Jewish Day School students and friends coming to the Clubhouse II New Activities Room from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, to assist seniors in understanding the latest in smartphones and computer technology. The second part will feature members of JRLW collecting food and donations for MANNA in the Clubhouse I Lobby from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm.

The Technology Support event is co-sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans Post 567, the Center for Lifelong Learning and the Computer Learning Center. High school students from Charles Smith Jewish Day School and the Berman Academy will work one-on-one with seniors to cope with their smartphones, tablets and laptops, as well as the computers in the center. The students have become a regular feature here in Leisure World, satisfying many seniors who need extra help to master their iPhones and computers. At the same time, the students earn service credits at their schools.

To enable the scheduling of students and seniors during the two one-hour sessions starting at 10:00 am and ending at 1:00 pm, residents are asked to sign up at the E&R office in Clubhouse II. Indicate on the sign-in sheet the technology in which you are interested and the session for which you will be available.

Another regular feature on Good Deeds Day has been the table set up in the lobby of Clubhouse I, manned by members of the Jewish Residents of Leisure World, collecting packages of food and donations for MANNA. MANNA is an essential organization providing food for the needy in the community. A number of Leisure World residents

participate in the work done by MANNA. You can help by donating, packages of food with current dating limits or funds that can be used to buy food for the needy.

Participate in the efforts by the overall community organizations here in Montgomery County and Maryland to provide services or sustenance to those who are in need of our help. Sign up for the Tech Day at E&R in Clubhouse II and then bring a bag or two with food or a donation for MANNA to Clubhouse I.

Discussion to Follow

Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, will be observed on May 2, and we commemorate it with this touching film. An 88 year-old Jewish tailor runs away from Buenos Aires to Poland, where he searches for a friend who saved him from certain death at the end of World War II. After seven decades without any contact with him, Abraham will try to find his old friend and keep his promise to return one day. Comedic and poignant in equal measure, The Last Suit approaches its weighty themes with a light touch that illuminate a serious story.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A man goes to his doctor and says, “I don’t think my wife’s hearing is as good as it used to be. What should I do?” The doctor replies, “Try this test to find out for sure. When your wife is in the kitchen doing dinner, stand fifteen feet behind her and ask her a question. If she doesn’t respond, keep moving closer, asking the question until she does hear you.”The man goes home and sees his wife preparing dinner. He stands fifteen feet behind her and says, “What’s for dinner, Honey?” He gets no response. He moves to ten feet and repeats the question. Still no response, so he moves to five feet. Again, no answer. Finally, he stands directly behind her and says, “Honey, what’s for dinner?”She replies, “For the fourth time, I SAID CHICKEN!”

YOGA WORKSHOP Cheryl Kravitz, wife of Cantor Mike Kravitz, will be conducting a workshop on yoga on March 31, at the Willow Street Yoga Center, 8561 Fenton Street, Silver Spring, Maryland. As basic communication skills for people with Alzheimer’s Disease are diminished, caregivers sometimes can no longer connect with them. Amidst these immense challenges for caregivers and patients, yoga offers many tools to make interaction easier and more enjoyable for all involved. Registration link is here: http://www.willowstreetyoga.com/dementia/

According to the Institute on Aging, the importance of yoga for individuals with dementia is three-fold: 1) exercise for the body, 2) exercise for the mind, and 3) a tool for stress reduction. This workshop benefits both men and women with dementia and their caregivers. Studies have shown that caregivers for people with dementia are under so much stress they often neglect themselves. Yoga offers a personal journey of growth and self-discovery for caregivers and the patient..

Cheryl Kravitz is a graduate of the Willow Street Yoga Teacher Training Program and received additional certification to teach yoga to survivors of trauma, restorative yoga and yoga for brain longevity. She teaches specialized yoga to people with injuries, survivors of abuse, individuals with dementia and caregivers. She has taught yoga to college students with learning differences, members of the military and, with a translator, individuals whose first language is not English.

Jewish Residents of Leisure World Silver Spring, Maryland

March 2011, Adar 1 - Adar 2, 5771 Newsletter Editor: Bernice F. Cohen 301-598-0192 Website: http://www.jrlw.org
