New crude oils, with a higher mass content of solids and smaller particle sizes, have become common within refinery feed slates. These solids can stabilize emulsions and upset the desalter, causing temporary loss of performance. This diminished performance can then translate into undesirable consequences for downstream oil and wastewater processes, and add to the refinery maintenance burden. For more than 40 years, refiners have struggled with managing solids during the desalting process. Refiners want to increase solids removal; they want it done faster and more efficiently, and with the growing trend toward processing heavier, high-solids crude oils, the need to manage those solids is greater than ever. Solids in crude oils can significantly impact a refiner’s bottom line. When present in the crude, these constituents can cause issues, including fouling of crude tanks and downstream equipment; desalter unit upsets; increased energy use; catalyst deactivation; and downgraded product value. Poor desalter operation can also strain wastewater treatment systems and lead to non-compliance issues. The Solution: Baker Hughes JETTISON solids release technology Bakers Hughes JETTISON solids release agents (SRA) represent a true breakthrough in solids management. JETTISON SRA removes oil from solids; releasing solids from the emulsion/interface into the brine, which remains oil-free. In addition, refiners experience better operational flexibility and improved throughput, along with reduced maintenance, energy and catalyst costs, while maintaining product value. Effective solids management enables refiners to maximize their profit opportunities by being able to successfully process challenging crude oils. The Challenge: Increase removal of solids and contaminants from crude oils during the desalting processWhat is the most critical challenge for removing solids from crudes today? New crude oils, with a higher mass content of solids and smaller particle sizes, have become common within refi nery feed slates. These solids can stabilize emulsions and upset the desalter, causing temporary loss of performance. This diminished performance can then translate into undesirable consequences for downstream oil and wastewater processes, and add to the refi nery maintenance burden.

For more than 40 years, refi ners have struggled with managing solids during the desalting process. Refi ners want to increase solids removal; they want it done faster and more effi ciently, and with the growing trend toward processing heavier, high-solids crude oils, the need to manage those solids is greater than ever.

Solids in crude oils can signifi cantly impact a refi ner’s bottom line.

The Solution: Baker Hughes JETTISON solids release technologyBakers Hughes JETTISON™ solids release agents (SRA) represent a true breakthrough in solids management. JETTISON SRA removes oil from solids; releasing solids from the emulsion/interface into the brine, which remains oil-free. In addition, refi ners experience better operational fl exibility and improved throughput, along with reduced maintenance, energy and catalyst costs, while maintaining product value. Effective solids management enables refi ners to maximize their profi t opportunities by being able to successfully process challenging crude oils.

Achieving a high degree of increased solids removal requires a holistic approach. JETTISON SRA technology is part of a larger platform of tools and technologies known as the Baker Hughes Crude Oil Management™ program, because Baker Hughes doesn’t only treat the symptoms at the desalter. A successful approach begins with crude oil receipts, includes the impact of slops and rerun, and continues downstream to encompass the desalting process.

The Baker Hughes Crude Oil Management approach is aimed at providing the best feedstock preparation possible, so as to maximize refi nery utilization and profi tability. The new JETTISON SRA technology is the latest addition to the crude oil processing toolbox, enabling refi ners to take full advantage of attractively-priced opportunity crude oils.

Effi cient solids management is no longer a wish, it is a fact.
