JESUS: GREATER THAN MOSESHEBREWS 3

Therefore… holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; 2 He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house. 3For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house.

4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. 5 Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; 6 but Christ [was faithful] as a Son over His house--whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.

JESUS IS SUPERIOR TO MOSES

I. Jesus is greater in His Person (v. 1-2)•Moses was called and commissioned by God.• Jesus is the Apostle sent by God as His “last word”

to sinful man, representing God to men. •Moses was a prophet who, on occasion, served as a

priest but was never a high priest• Jesus is the Great High Priest, representing men to

God in Heaven

JESUS IS SUPERIOR TO MOSES

II. Jesus is greater in His Ministry (v. 3-6)•Moses was a member of God’s House (v. 3)• Jesus is the Builder of God’s House (v. 3-4)

•Moses was a servant of God’s House (v. 5)• Jesus is the Son over God’s House (v. 6a)

•Moses testified to Coming Things (v. 5)

• Jesus Fulfilled the Testimony (v. 5)

7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,

“TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, 8 DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME, AS IN THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS, 9WHERE YOUR FATHERS TRIED ME BY TESTING ME, AND SAW MY WORKS FOR FORTY YEARS. 10“THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SAID, ‘THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS’; 11AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, ‘THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.’”

The Israelites committed many sins in the wilderness but only one prevented their entry into the land of promise, the sin of unbelief.

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. 15 As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.

16 Who were those who heard yet rebelled? Was it not all who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did God swear that they would not enter his rest if not to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

• Cultivate your heart

• Repent

• Commit to follow Leader

• Be intentional about encouraging others
