Hall and Jerra Rotary partnership going from strength to strength
Readers will be aware that for the past 6 years Jerra Rotary has been a partner with Hall Rotary in the
Saturday operations of the Capital Region Farmers Markets. While Hall Rotary coordinate the behind the
scenes market operations and management of the stall holders, the Jerra members play a key role on
Market day with the manning of the ‘front of house’ Rotary stand and handle all queries from patrons as
well as selling shopping bags etc., and managing the car parking side of things.
Over the years the role of the Jerra club has evolved into a real partnership with Hall Rotary, and the
relationship grew even stronger last week with agreement being reached on a regular financial income
for Jerrabomberra. The market role performed by Jerra members will now earn the club a minimum of
$20,000 each year, which will be directed to community projects of the club’s choice. President Paul
observed that “This will be a significant and regular income and will enable us to be even more effective
as a Rotary Club both locally and internationally. He went on to say that “…the strengthening of the
partnership was recognition of the value Hall places on the role our members play at the markets and the
strong relationship we have built up with Hall Rotary, and with the stall holders and patrons at the
markets”. See Presidents report on page 2.
New Marquee ready to make a splash
It has been a long wait but the new Jerra Rotary Marquee has arrived
and the artwork on the roof and side panels is very impressive. Not
only does the artwork look good, it provides an invitation to those
interested to learn more about the good work we do through a clear
statement that ‘guests and new members are always welcome’.
The new 6 metre by 3 metre marquee was able to be purchased
through grant money from the Queanbeyan Clubs grant process the
club successful obtained last year. It is expected that the new Marquee will make its first appearance in
early May at either the MS Swim and/or the International Music Festival.
District Training Assembly a wet couple of days but well worth the trip
Six members of Jerra Rotary took a trip to Tumut for the weekend to attend the
annual Rotary District 9710 Training Assembly. Although it was a wet weekend
the members enjoyed the opportunity to hear about developments in Rotary and
enjoy the fellowship of old and new friends from around the District. The
incoming 2015-16 Board members were aslo able to attend specific sessions on
their portfolios in readiness for their new roles.

Meeting 838 – 16 April 2015
President Paul got the meeting underway by inviting Vera to read the ‘Charge to Australia’ followed
by Carolyn who delivered the toast to Rotary International. The Pres welcomed Liz as a guest of
Bruce.
Apologies – Attendance officer Lizzy was back with us and advised of apologies for the evening from
Cathy, Colin, Sue R, Jon, David S, Glenn and Glenda. LoAs for David B and Ian were also noted.
President’s Report
President Paul reported that during the past week he, Mez, Anton and Jan had met with the Hall
Rotary Market Committee and had firmly cemented the partnership between our two clubs in
respect of the Markets. As members know, Jerra club has been working in partnership with the Hall
club to operate the Capital Region Farmers Markets each Saturday. The role of the Jerra club has
evolved over the past few years and it was timely to re-assess the partnership agreements between
the two clubs. The result of the meeting was in President Paul’s words ‘excellent’ with an agreement that, moving forward, Jerra
Rotary would receive $20,000 annually from the market stall takings, and also continue to receive all Saturday morning takings
from the sale of bags, etc at the ‘front of house’ stall which our members run. President Paul indicated that the strengthening of
the partnership was recognition of the value Hall RC places on the role our members play
at the markets and the strong relationship we have built up with Hall Rotary, and with
the stall holders and patrons at the markets. President Paul also advised that the two
clubs will have a ‘market meeting’ each quarter to continue to monitor activities at the
markets, and the new agreement would be reviewed annually.
While on a high from the ‘market news’ Pres Paul unveiled a sample panel from the new
marquee that the club recently took delivery of. See picture left. Pres Paul suggested, and
all agreed, that in addition to being part of the Marquee, the side panel could also be
used as a separate banner to promote the club at various functions.
Executive Reports
Secretary Glenn has travelled to Gallipoli for the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC and Treasurer Jon had a work commitment. So no
executive reports tonight.
Directors Reports
On the International front Chilly reported that the response for the next stage of the Tonga RAWCS project was still slow, with
only six people so far confirming their interest in participating. Chilly is looking at alternative options should the team not reach
the critical mass needed. Still some time though as 30 April will be his cut off.
From a Community Service perspective Jan touched on the arrangements for the ANZAC DAY breakfast with a start time of
4.30am for those helping. Jan also requested members who had received club aprons to pay for them by depositing $27 per
apron into the club account with their name as a reference.
Anton spoke on the Music Festival arrangements, advising that the shifts would be shorter this year (about 2 hours) with a ‘light
snack’ approach to the food. Anton is developing a menu. A roster for volunteers on each of the nights was circulated.
Peter advised that in respect of Youth we had identified a suitable RYPEN candidate in Olivia (Rosemary’s daughter) and this
application would be processed through the Board. Peter also advised that correspondence had been received from Will and all
was well in the USA. (see ‘Where are Hannah and Will’ section).
Club Service was a nil report.

Joker – Chris amused all with a short joke about telephone poles (see below), before she also
managed to have the lucky ticket for the Joker draw, but only drew the 4 of Clubs, so the
Joker survived for another week and the pot got bigger. Maybe next week the Treasurer
might tell us how big the pot is now?
Chris’s Joke:
TELSTRA needed to hire a team of telephone pole installers for the Stuart Highway, and
McMurray and the boss had to choose between a couple of rough looking Aussie guys from
Port Pirie and two hefty Irishmen.
So the boss met both teams and said. "Here's what we'll do. Each team will be installing
poles out on the new road for a day. The team that installs the most poles gets the job."
Both teams headed right out. At end of the shift, the two Port Pirie guys came back and the
boss asked them how many they had installed.
They said that it was tough going, but they'd put in twelve.
Forty-five minutes later, the Irish team came back in and they were totally exhausted.
The boss asked. "Well, how many poles did you guys install?"
Mick, the team leader, wiped his brow and sighed. "We got three in."
"The boss gasped. "Three! Those two Port Pirie guys put in twelve!"
"Yeah," said Mick. “But you should see how much they left sticking out of the ground!
Attendance was boldly reported as 93.7%, which clearly shows that figures can be plucked
out of the air or indeed anywhere. As long as they justify the President shouting Port and
Bailey’s for a figure over 90%.
This week’s market report comes from David S.
A cool blustery day with the odd spot of rain but nothing substantial. My impression was that numbers were down which might be as a result of the overcast weather.
Table usage remains low with only three traders using our tables. However, bag sales remained reasonable with 45 green and three red sold. I believe that the best way to increase weekly takings is to charge everyone who asks where the ATMs are $5, that way we would have a steady income in the hundreds!!

Where are Hannah and Will?
Hannah returned to Rotary for the recent meeting after her exciting trip around Australia. Pictured here Hannah
got to assist President Paul in displaying the new Marquee artwork.
Apart from that Hannah has had a quiet week recovering from her Trek Away and catching up on sleep.
In-between sleeps, Hannah has managed to visit the Australian Mint, both old and new Parliament Houses, and
spent a day sewing with Sandra.
Hannah also continues to contribute to the Australian economy by eating as many TimTams as she can.
Something a little different this week from Will’s perspective, rather than photos we have an email from Will with
news of his Exchange adventures.
Hey everyone,
I hope everything is well and good in Australia.
Everything is all well and good in the US of A with my most recent trip to Hawaii! My host family were kind enough to invite me along on
their family vacation to the main island of Hawaii for a total of 7 days. It was a great experience being able to get back to that warmer
weather and going down to the beach. I have been so lucky with all of the opportunities I have been granted with this exchange program
travelling all over America and meeting new and amazing people along the way, it really is something you can only dream of.
During my time in Hawaii we rented a Jeep and drove all over the island exploring and hiking the mountains seeing the most incredible
sights! It was a great opportunity to bond with my host family, getting to know them better and likewise with their children Jeremy and
Maya. Some days were spent laying down by the pool and relaxing, throwing the 'football' (American football) around on the beach was
also extremely fun. They are crazy about hiking so we managed to hike this huge mountain named Diamond Head. It was a crater that was
transformed into a military lookout during World War Two, you can see the whole island from the top of the run down base. The hotel room
was unavailable so to make up for it the hotel placed us in a better location and a free pass to see the Fia Fia festival, this is where the
indigenous population dance and throw fire around with their hands. Crazy. We also went surfing on the beaches of Ohaio (sic), I caught
on to it pretty quickly and managed to surf some killer waves now and then. It was a great holiday for spring break and came back with a
huge tan.
I'm settling into the school routine and making heaps of friends with a recent car trip to a privet beach with some 10 close friends. I have
fantastic teachers with my weakest subject maths improving rapidly making my way up the grade ladder. The rest of my subjects are going
well with English being at the top of the list for classes. I also made it onto the schools Lacrosse JV team this would be like making it into
the 2nd 15 and I think for my age that a great achievement for me (never played it before.. don't even know how I got in..) my first training
will be tomorrow.. can’t wait.
Hope all is going well in the land down under.
Best wishes,
William

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name ‘Jerraganda’ and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.
We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is,
“Doing Good and Having Fun”
