Week 4 in review Robotics challenge day It was great to be back with such enthusiastic and willing learners. For some students, the initial session was a little challenging as they had changed the robotics kits they were using or for the Year 3 students, it was the first time they had an opportunity to build and program their own robots.

Each student was able to have a kit of their own, something that does not often happen, so hands on time was maximised. Our first session was a get to know your kit where we identified key pieces and developed skills to tell the length of axles, beams, and bricks. (Tip for this week – grey axles in boxes are odd lengths and black axles are even lengths).

To get the feel of the kits students were challenged to build a car that was powered by a rubber band. This was a little tricky to start with, as it was stretching our thinking, but after some examples were shown it was action time. Shout out to Zara who visualised and created not only the first car but then took time to support her classmates to get theirs working.

With all cars able to move forward using a wound rubber band it was time to get into the robotics. Whilst Years 5 and 6 built their first robot, Years 3 and 4 worked with me on WeDo2.

Our lessons included connecting, moving forward and backwards, sound, repeat and distance. Wow are Year 3 quick learners and Year 4 were able to show off what they remembered from 2020. It was time then to tackle the challenge.

The Street Sweeper I have rubbish in my street, and I want to move the rubbish and put it into the area for rubbish. Can you build a sweeper robot that moves using a belt system that can push the rubbish to the red area? When one piece of rubbish is collected it needs to return and repeat this 3 times. Once your robot starts you cannot touch it until it is finished moving 3 times. Oh, for safety it should beep before reversing back.

After many practice runs, followed by refinement in either design or coding, it was run time. The class exceeded my expectations with all street sweepers achieving their task. Thank you to Logan who shared his knowledge on coding with anyone having difficultly getting their sweeper to travel the distance.

Week 4 in review cont.

Robotics challenge day Year 5 EV3 students built their first simple robot. Their previous experience in using WeDo2 was evident as the builds were completed very efficiently. There was then opportunity to learn how to connect the brick, move forward and backwards and the all-important turn. It was also important to learn how to turn off these robots as they can get away quickly. It was time to put our skills into action.

Challenge Floor Cleaner I do not like cleaning my floors so could you build a robot (instructions), that moves across the floor and touches the 16 squares as it cleans? It starts from the cross and returns to the cross. It can go in any order.

Students coded their robots, succeeding in moving them along at least 8 of the squares. Zara and Logan having had previous experience, covered the 16 squares. To ensure we put our cleaner robots into action a new path was designed whereby the students moved the robot from a designated distance forward landing in a specific location and returning. This was repeated until the area was clean (3 times). Well done to Y5 for showing their skills in adapting to a new path.

All Year 3-6 students’ robots achieved their challenges, some more efficiently than others, some with more elaborate designs and some with longer coding solutions, but they all put their robotics skills on show, and I would say made a clean sweep of things.

Parents and carers what was on show outside their learning was perseverance, patience, and persistence. They showed a willingness to ask for assistance, propose their own ideas and seek feedback. They stepped out of their comfort zones and showed amazing skills of resilience and dealing with things that do not go to plan the first time. I can’t wait until we take on our next challenge. Summer uniforms The NSW DoE supports the wearing of a school uniform which promotes a sense of belonging for students and creates a positive identity for the school community. School uniforms also contribute to the personal safety of students by allowing easier recognition inside the school and in the community and to protect students from injury. JPS expects all students to wear the uniform during school hours and also sun-safe hats for outside activities. Royal blue jackets are also winter uniform.

The P&C runs a uniform shop via the Office. We ask that parents utilise this service so that students are wearing clothing of the same style and colour. To assist families, we also have a clothing pool of preloved uniforms available free of charge. We seek your cooperation in ensuring our students wear their uniform each day. Nothing makes the staff prouder than when students wear their uniform.

At JPS we wear our uniform with pride!

When buying your child new

runners for school, please try to

buy plain black or plain blue to

blend in with our uniform.

Thank you for your cooperation.
