Intro ● Born June 3, 1808, Christian
County(Fairview), KY to a military family
● Attended Jefferson College in Mississippi and Transylvania University in Kentucky
● Later, at the request of President James Monroe, became a cadet at West Point
● Married Sarah Knox, who was the daughter of future President, Zachary Taylor
● Died December 6, 1889, New Orleans, LA
Military ● Fought in Blackhawk War,
capturing Chief Blackhawk (1831)
● Continued to fight against indian tribes like the Comanche and Pawnees
● Fought with Mississippi Riflemen in Mexican-American War (1846-1848)
Politics● In 1843, he served as a delegate for the
Democratic National Convention● In 1845, Davis was elected into US House of
Representatives ● In 1847, he was appointed senator of Mississippi ● Advocated for states’ rights and slavery ● In 1853, appointed secretary of war but later
returned to senate, and later left when Mississippi left the Union
● In 1861, he was made Pres. of Confederacy
