It’s finally March and already in the stores I’m seeing so many decorations gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. Every year when I see these displays I always look for anything I could turn into a 4-H four-leaf clover. They are far and few between! For this newsletter opener, I thought we’d dive into the history of the 4-H four-leaf clover and how it came about representing our organization.

When 4-H began 115 years ago in 1904, the clubs and groups had many different names– boys’ and girls’ clubs, agriculture clubs, home economics clubs, corn clubs, and many more. In 1907, gentleman by the name of O.H. Benson of Iowa created the three-leaf clover to be the emblem of these groups. By 1909, the emblem was used on pins and awards. The three H’s stood for head, heart, and hands.

Around that same time, Benson and others started using a four-leaf clover. Benson wanted the H’s to stand for head, heart, hands...and hustle. In Washington D.C. in 1911, club leaders adopted the four-leaf 4-H clover design– a green four-leaf clover with a white H on each leaf. Someone suggested that the “hustle” H be changed to health instead and it’s remained since. The term 4-H wasn’t officially used until around 1918 and then in the early 1920’s boys’ and girls’ clubs across the country became known as 4-H clubs.

In later years, the 4-H clover was patented and is a protected name and emblem from Congress. That’s why you see those small numbers in the bottom right corner of the emblem– it’s the federal code that marks the clover’s protection under the federal government.

When you see three-leaf clovers in displays and decorations for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday, I hope you’ll remember and think of our early beginnings in 4-H.

Kara

P.S. Anyone wish the fourth H still stood for hustle?

UW-Madison/Extension Merger

Our name has changed!

Formally UW-Extension, we are transitioning to merge with

UW-Madison. Our new name is UW-Madison, Division of

Extension. You can call us Extension! Our logo has changed

from blue to red and we now proudly claim the UW-Madison

Crest as our own. You might notice some other changes as

we make this transition. What doesn’t change?

Extension’s commitment to Jefferson County and providing

quality education, positive youth development programming,

and delivering the resources of the University to the people of

Wisconsin.

Please be patient with us as we make this transition as an

organization. Our logo is different, we have a different name,

and other changes will happen but we’re still here working for

you!

GENERAL NEWS

Weather Policy

Each club should discuss their weather policy before it is an

issue. Below is the countywide policy:

1. Meetings supported by the county should be cancelled

by at least 3:30 p.m. the day of the meeting by calling

the EXT Office.

2. If time permits, a notice will go out to anyone who might

be affected by the cancellation via email and a note will

be posted on the website and Facebook. We will make

our best effort to directly contact those who’ve signed

up for the event.

3. If an event is cancelled during business hours, a notice

will go on the EXT main line at 920-674-7295.

4. As a general rule of thumb for county events, if school is

cancelled, any meetings and activities will be cancelled

as well.

CLUB NEWS

Rock River Clovers

The Rock River Clovers met at Rockwell Elementary School on February 6, 2019. Before the meeting the clover buds made felted hearts for Valentines Day. The other members made Valentines Day cards to give to the meals on wheels program. Some members gave project talks on the horse program. At the end of the meeting a graduated member from our club showed us how to dip cookies and fruits in chocolate.

Farmington All Stars

On Jan. 15, 2019, the Farmington All-Stars 4-H Club held its monthly meeting at the Farmington Town Hall.

The theme for the night was hats, and many members participated. Next month's theme is Valentine's Day, so wear red and/or pink.

At the start of the meeting, Kara Loyd, the new 4-H coordinator

for the county, introduced herself to members.

Club members reported on the recent community service event at Loaves and Fishes in Watertown, and planned for an upcoming community service evening tying more blankets for the Fort Atkinson hospital.

The club voted to present a $200 scholarship to Audrey Pelikan, a longtime club member who has finished her first semester of college and is entering the agriculture field.

The club talked about possibilities for fun activities in the next month. A survey will be going out on whether to go roller-skating, travel to Cascade Mountain or do some other activity.

The monthly photo challenge (Winter Scenes) has been extended through the February meeting, which will take place Feb. 5. Also coming in the next month is the next Loaves and Fishes service, which will be Feb. 18.
