From childhood on, the people who live in this cave have their legs and nec-s chained sothat they can see only straight ahead in front of them. #he chains -eep them fromturning their heads in any other direction.

"#he only light in the cave is from a fire burning far above the people andbehind them. %etween the fire and the chained people there@s a road, built on a-ind of stage structure such as you find in theatersTagain above and behind thepeopleTalong which move other people and animals, some carrying things, some

not, some spea-ing, some not."#he discussion goes on and on about the shadows from the abovedescription being perceived as reality by the cave dwellers. *hen the cave dwellersfinally leave the cave and see the reality of the outside world, they have a hard timeaccepting the truth.

#hen $ocrates sums it all up5NLet@s ta-e this whole allegory and apply it to everything we@ve said so far.

*hat we see with our eyes and experience through our senses is li-e the cave, while the sun, the center of the universe, is li-e the fire that illumines the cave. syou probably expectTand I agree with your expectationsTthe ascent from the

cave is li-e the soul@s ascent to the 'ealm of Ideas.N3f course, 8ust because we agree on this doesn@t ma-e it true) there may besome god or power somewhere who -nows the truth about these things. %ut this isthe way it appears to me5 that of all the sub8ects of human -nowledge, the last andmost difficult to be seen is the Idea of the 2ood. %ut once seen, it is clear that theIdea of the 2ood is the source of everything. In the visible realm, it@s the source ofphysical light, and in the consciousness realm, it@s the source of truth and wisdom.nd any person who wants to act with 8ustice, either personally or publicly, mustsee it."M#F%*=!

    ,lternatives to Fighting

"#here are always alternatives to fighting." 3bi *an /enobi, pisode I

3bi *an taught Lu-e that there were always alternatives to fighting.$ometimes he used Jedi Mind tric-s, or a fa-e dragon call to scare the sand peopleaway, or he tried to persuade aggressors not to attac- through reason. De alwaystried to loo- for alternatives to fighting if possible. 3nly when all other means failedwould he use his Lightsaber.

I thin- modern Jedi can learn from 3bi *an(s example, and should only consider fighting as the last resort. *e should be well trained how to defend others, and ourselves but we should always loo- for alternatives before we decide to fight.

voiding a fight could be something as easy as moving out of the aggressor@sstri-ing range, and trying to calm the aggressor. %ut if all else fails, a Jedi willdefend himselfPherself and others.May the Force %e *ith =ou!

    Compassion4 !arriage4 ,ttachments and #ossessions

;adme5 re you allowed to loveR I thought that was forbidden for a JediRna-in5 ttachment is forbidden. ;ossession is forbidden. &ompassion, which Iwould define as unconditional love, is central to a Jedi(s life, so you might say weare encouraged to love. pisode II=oda5 "ttachment leads to 8ealousy. #he shadow of greed, that is." pisode III=oda5 "#rain yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose." pisode III

#his is ta-en from an interesting conversation between na-in and ;admewhile they were traveling to Haboo. *e can gain some important insights about theJedi teachings from this conversation.

&ompassion is central to a Jedi@s life. &ompassion is defined in the&ambridge 4ictionary as5 Na strong feeling of sympathy and sadness for thesuffering or bad luc- of others and a desire to help them.O &ompassion is anecessary trait. Jedi must possess compassion in order to help and serve others.

It is also clear from this conversation that the Jedi of the 3ld 'epublic lived alot li-e Mon-s. #hey were not allowed to marry, have possessions or attachments ifthey wanted to be a Jedi /night. #hey lived in #emples, did not receive pay for theirwor-, as far as we -now, and their lives were dedicated to serving the Force, the'epublic, and the Jedi 3rder.

*e want to avoid any future rebellion and devastation li-e the Jedi of the 3ld'epublic had with na-in $-ywal-er +who later became 4arth ader. #herefore,Jedi from the Jedi $anctuary are allowed to marry, have families, possessions and

attachments, as long as they maintain their balance. letting go@ and trusting inthe will of the Force@ attitude needs to be developed by Jedi gradually over time.Hormal attachments are to be expected in life and are acceptable as long as

we stay well balanced. %ut when we become obsessive, possessive, 8ealous andcontrolling towards our attachments, then we are moving towards the dar- side. *ehave to train ourselves to gradually let go. Dow can you feel the Living Force whenyou are obsessed with another person or thingR Dow can you meditate or have aclear mindR

*e must be careful that our attachments don@t control and possess us. *eust always -eep our balance. 3f course, Jedi can still choose to live a mon- type

lifestyle if they want to, but it@s not mandatory in the Jedi $anctuary &ongregation.M#F%*=!

    Jedi 'elp Others

NJedi serve others rather than rule over them.O #he Jedi &ode

#he way of the Jedi is to help others. =ou can see this theme repeated againand again in the $tar *ars pisodes. Dow many times did Dan, Leia, Lu-e, 3bi

*an, Kui 2on, and the other Jedi stic- out their nec-s to selflessly help othersR#hin- about the &lone *ars and how the Jedi 8umped in to save na-in, 3bi

*an and ;adme, with no thought of their own personal safety or comfort. #he wayof the Jedi is to respond to the call for help from others, and not to be self absorbed or egocentric. Its not that we don@t want to help others. *e are usually too worriedand obsessed with our own problems to even reali7e that other people need ourhelp. *e 8ust can@t see it.

very time we reach out to help others, a part of our own dar- side isdefeated, and some of our own problems are solved too. nswering anotherperson@s cry for help is more important than to fret and worry about ourselves all thetime. 3f course, balance in all things. *e need to ta-e care of our own problemsand this is important too. %ut somehow by helping others, we are helped.

s Jedi we need to open our eyes and loo- around us because someone outthere might need our help and support. It might even be some one in your ownfamily, an old friend, a fellow Jedi or a stranger. M#F%*=!
