As a teen, Jedd DeKalb experimented with his father’s 35mm Leica camera and began

taking photos at concerts during his high school years. While a Marketing major at

the University of Tennessee, Jed worked on the campus newspaper, the Beacon, and

covered concerts as part of his beat. Shooting for the Beacon, he captured images of George

Harrison and Ravi Shankar, Elton John, a yet-to-hit-it-big Bruce Springsteen, and several

ZZ Top concerts. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top loved his work so the band flew him to Canada

to shoot the cover for their fourth album—1975’s Fandango—while Jed was still in school

After graduation, he worked as a photo journalist for a couple newspapers before being

hired by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, Robin Hood, as a State Photographer II in

the Tennessee State Photo Services division. Over a 38-year career with the state, he served

five governors and rose to become the Chief State Photographer. Jed retired at the end of

Governor Haslam’s term earlier this year, bringing his remarkable career spent chronicling

the State’s history, heritage, and milestones to a close. Well, not quite—the State still draws

on Jed’s talents and he is happily fielding freelance assignments.

“ Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask ‘how’, while others of a more curious nature will ask ‘why’. Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information.”

— Man Ray (1890 – 1976) American visual artist. He was best known for his photography, but considered himself a painter above all.
