We are requesting that these changes be made effective Autumn 2020. Dr. Annie Specht and the Agricultural Communication faculty who oversee this minor propose these revisions in response to changes to the Agricultural Communication major that impact the minor, as well as to take full advantage of increased expertise of the faculty in this program as a result of faculty hires. In addition, the proposed changes provide greater flexibility for students to tailor their minor courses by reducing the number of required courses (from 4 to 2) and dividing course choice options into Design and Elective categories. These combined changes will enhance the student experience as well as reduce logistical and scheduling issues in the current minor. This proposal has been approved by the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership and by the College Academic Affairs Committee. Dear Dr. Smith, The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is requesting Council on Academic Affairs approval for revisions to the Agricultural Communication Minor as outlined in the attached document. Please let me know if any additional information is needed in support of this request.

September 9, 2019 Dr. Jeanne Osborne Associate Dean for Academic Programs College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences 100 Agricultural Administration Building 2120 Fyffe Rd. Columbus, OH 43210 Dear Dr. Osborne, Following large-scale revisions to the AGRCOMM major curriculum in the 2018-19 academic year and the addition of new faculty and courses to the agricultural communication program, the ACEL faculty propose the below changes to the AGRCOMM minor. OVERVIEW OF AGRCOMM MINOR CHANGES
• Division of minor coursework into 3 categories: required, design, and elective courses • New courses AGRCOMM 2531, 4530, and 5535 added to minor requirements or electives • Removal of non-AGRCOMM courses from the list of possible electives • Number of total credits changed from 14-15 to 15
Course Categories Students completing the revised AGRCOMM minor will take 2 required courses: our new introductory class AGRCOMM 2531 and a speech class required as a General Education requirement in the college. For the first time, minors will have the opportunity to choose which design courses they complete, based on their interests and/or the availability of courses. They are required to complete 2 design courses but can complete a third as a minor elective. The additional elective category allows students to apply other AGRCOMM credit, such as study-abroad credit, GE courses, or additional design coursework, to their minor. New Courses AGRCOMM 2531: Intro to Agricultural Communication Practices, AGRCOMM 4530: Communicating Agricultural Issues, and AGRCOMM 5535: Data Visualization and Scientific Storytelling in FAES were approved as new courses last academic year. Course Removals The AGRCOMM program has grown over the last several years, and the new courses described above have allowed us to offer a minor taught almost solely by AGRCOMM and other ACEL faculty. We therefore propose to remove courses outside the ACEL department (with the exception of COMM 2110, which is an acceptable substitute for AGRCOMM 3130) from the minor curriculum. Number of Minor Credits With the proposed changes, the number of overall credits for the AGRCOMM minor is cemented at 15.
The changes outlined above have been proposed by the AGRCOMM faculty and approved by the ACEL academic affairs committee. They were created to meet the needs of our students and in response to logistical issues, such as course overlaps and students’ difficulties enrolling in required courses. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully, Annie R. Specht Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator, Agricultural Communication Chair, ACEL Undergraduate Programs Committee

Having recently revised our major curriculum, we’ve proposed a change to our AGRCOMM minor that could impact a course in your program. In previous iteraSons of the AGRCOMM minor, one SENR course – RURLSOC 5500: Diffusion of InnovaSons – has been on our list of elecSves. We would like to remove that course to encourage students in the minor to complete design coursework in our department, given that we’ve added to and expanded our elecSve offerings taught in the department. Please let me know if you have any quesSons or comments as we proceed with this proposal. Thank you for your consideraSon! Annie
