Date: Spring 2010, January 15-May 1

Location: Seminole State College, Florida Supervisor: Damian Serrano

Project: Develop a BIM model based on an existing building using detailed d detailed drawings and photos.

Result: A building information model was created using information from El Croquis’ monograph on The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The project chosen was the Seoul National University Museum of Art. For the final submission, a full set of the final submission, a full set of design documents was created.

BIM made the construction and manipulation of the structural frame much more fluid compared to traditional 2D and 3D methods. Their placement was made by attaching the cross bracing to corresponding grids and leand levels. After the frame was constructed, each subsequent step such as stairs and curtain walls came with ease.

TThe second annual Florida Foundation for Architecture design competition was focused on Florida's classrooms. Emerging professionals designed new modular classrooms for use within the ststate.

Sustainability was achieved by incorporating outdoor teaching spaces, natural light, porches, overhangs, and interlocking floor plans to create a communal space alternative.

Component based design was used to decrease the number of trips required per classroom installation from 2 to 1.5.

FFinally, by using a double roof for natural cooling and solar panels for generating electricity, the school’s power usage would be decreased.

Date: 2003-2008

Location: Orlando, Florida

Program:

Proposal:

Role:

1,000 seat sanctuary, nursery, children’s church, youth church, prayer chapel, admin offices, classrooms, large foyer, baptistry, catwalks for theatrical lighting

TThe urban lot required the program to be stacked on three floors. For instance, the educational wing organizes three youth church elements by age with each on separate floors. Additional classroom and administadministration space was added as required per floor.

Another urban strategy was placing the prayer chapel on the corner as a transparent invitational element to the city.

San Antonio, Texas 400+ seat Nave, Sacrament Chapel, Inter Faith Chapel, Sacristies, Narthex, Chancel The proposed chapel conveys its spiritual purpose in many ways. First, the structure being elevated causes one to “lift up their eyes” and rise up a stairway or ramp entering into “His holy temple”. Second, upon entering the concrete dome it bebecomes a fortress for tranquility and worship. The dome’s coffers and facets provide modern yet timeless acoustics that harken to many ancient churches. Opening the sky and concealing ground level views place former pilots in a spiritual sky of peaof peace and quiet in stark contrast to that of the violent sky of war. Third, the only threshold between the nave and narthex is the multifaith chapel. It is the crux and heart of the chapel, representing love of God and neighbor.

LLocate the theater on water to provide maximum versatility in storytelling and presentation. The stage lowers for scenes of Jesus walking on water via a slightly submerged stage and fishing scenes etc. when the stage is stage is totally submerged. PProposal:

Role:

Several measures were taken to add interest to the required reconciliation of the two foot street entry differential. To begin with, stairs were incorporated with a low slope ramp element. Because the slope was less than 1:20 and had a heig1:20 and had a height less than 28 inches, rails were not required. From there, the temple like stair element incorporated skewed columns. They added dimension to the storefront and supported the unifying porch ooverhang. Around the corner, the brick facade received a sandblast treatment adding interest but not encroaching on the road.

Remodel 64 public housing duplexes, admin offices, grounds, parking, playgrounds, public spaces, and daycare.

TThe main goal of the remodel was to give residents a sense of ownership over their personal unit and the neighborhood as a whole. Giving the duplexes separate front and back porches creates a sense of individuality and neighboand neighborhood presence. Ownership over the neighborhood is created by the insertion of community gardens, sculptures by locals, and a professional daycare staffed by certified residents. When laying out the new out the new walking, sitting, and barbecuing areas, crime prevention consultants worked with our team to approve the design.

Fall 2003

Ocala, Florida

CCreate a way station where horses and humans can sleep. It will also serve as an education facility for people using the Ocala trail. A lecture hall and exhibit space are to be included in the design.

TThe lodge folds out of the landscape as another layer of the ecology like leaves, soil, or rocks. The outward fold reciprocates a motion of inward folding by embracing travelers into its filtering shade along the foforty ninth avenue trail head.

The station itself is merged layers of program. Just like the surrounding landscape’s foliage is interwoven, the interior spaces run through, into, and over each other. Interconnecting spaces promotes interaction of visitors with the stwith the station.

The lodge becomes a tool for informing riders about the formal and conceptual ideas of Ocala, Florida’s Ecotrails.

existing site is inscribed with a grid extending from the surrounding city streets. The blocks created from the operation organize and form needed professional office, civic , educeducation, retail, residential, and public space.

Blocks are organized in stratified linear districts. The uses are consistent east to west and the materials on each block vary north and south. This method creates a simple way of navigating the newly created blocks as blocks as well as creating a rich material pallet.

Date: Fall 2007

Location: University Of Florida, Gainesville Supervisor: Martin Gundersen

Project 1: A six week long project titled “Cubic Speculations – Reading a Spatial Language” served as the first of many stepping stones in the freshmen’s architecture education. A cube was utilized as a microcosm for exploring spspatial development. Models, sketches, sections, photos, and axonometric drawings were the methods implemented. They aided students in communicating ideas such as boundary, edge, enclosure, implied spaimplied space, etc.

In a second five week long project, students learned the fundamentals of environment and context by constructing the negative space created by placing their constructs along side other student’s constructs. SStudents were also given photos as a generative contextual element in their process.

Date: Spring 2008

Location: University Of Florida, Gainesville Supervisor: Mark McGlothlin

Project 1: The first four weeks of the student’s second semester was spent analyzing and learning to read the material, spatial, and structural logic of a given architecture. They were given the Villa Muller in Prague, Czech Republic Republic by Adolf Loos. This home is a long standing example of a built structure that has outward expressions of the interior, but immediately folds in on it self to create space for living. Through the use of ddrawings, photos, readings, and personal research, students were asked to unveil and redisplay the underlying ideas and interactions existing within the house and the surrounding ground planes.

Four additional weeks were spent using the discovered spatial language of the inward folding construct to create implied resultant spaces in an unfolded landscape form. Full sections were taken through the house and unhouse and unfolded making the once neutrally oriented mass a linear and planar landscape. The primary means of drawing was chipboard which was then used to form the models.

Date: Spring 2008

Location: University Of Florida, Gainesville Supervisor: Mark McGlothlin

Project 1: A two week jump starter project after spring break to get students ready for their final.

SStudents constructed a vessel to display a given set of parts that do not necessarily belong together. Before construction, each student created an exploratory design document to aid in the conceptual understanding of the understanding of the mechanical parts given to them. No glue was allowed in the process thus guiding students in the discovery of unique mechanical connections.

In the next step, large pieces of wood and dowels made a sturdy housing for the highly engineered pieces. The large size of the elements helped introduce students to the use of professional wood shop methods and cmethods and craft.

Through photography, students discovered the combination of elements created deep and intricately lit spaces from the seemingly simple and utilitarian parts.
