COVER STORY

MEETING MEDICATION CHALLENGES AS YOU AGE According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 75 percent of people older than 65 have more than one chronic health problem. So, at this stage of life, it’s common to take many different drugs.

The problem is it can be hard to keep track of more than one drug. And how your body responds to medicines can also change as you age. Challenges like these may explain why one-third of

hospitalizations among older patients are due to drug-related problems.

Communicating well with your pharmacist can help you stay safe and ensure your drugs work the right way. Each person’s situation is unique, so get the personal attention you deserve. Ask JCMG pharmacists any questions you may have.

In the meantime, here are some ways to manage common challenges you may face:

BY ASHLEY SCHREINER, PHARMD, JCMG HEALTHMART PHARMACY

1. Multiple meds. It helps to use one pharmacy for all your prescriptions and refills. That way, we can check for potential interactions between your medications. And we can suggest supplements that would be safe for you to take along with those drugs.

Bring a list of all your prescription and over-the-counter medications and vitamins and supplements. Let’s discuss ways to synchronize or simplify your medication schedule. Ask about our refill reminder program—you never need to miss a dose!

If you notice any side effects, tell your doctor and pharmacist right away. This can be a reaction to a drug or a combination of drugs. It may also be due to an interac-tion with alcohol or certain foods.

2. Forgetfulness. You may find it helpful to write down your medication schedule. Note the day and time to take each drug, and what it’s for. Include special instructions such as whether to take the drug with food and where to store it.

Special pill boxes may also help. Also, set a daily routine and tie it to another well-ingrained habit. For example, if you need to take a medication at night, keep those pills near your toothbrush.

3. Cost. On fixed incomes, many older adults are concerned about the high cost of medications. First of all, know that skipping doses or not filling your prescription is not a safe solution. You need to take the drug exactly as directed.

Talk to a JCMG pharmacist about ways to reduce costs. For example, we can see whether a generic version of your drug is available. Or you may be eligible for a prescription assistance program. Also, ask your insurance company if you can get a senior citizen discount.

Before filling a prescription, your doctor may have free samples available. This isn’t a long-term solution. But you can try a drug for free while seeing if it works with a minimum of side effects.

4. Swallowing or dexterity problems. Do you have trouble swallowing pills or opening pill bottles? Together, we can come up with a solution.

For example, easy-to-open containers are okay if there are no children in your home. And, you may be able to take a liquid medicine instead of pills. Check with a JCMG pharmacist first before chewing or crushing tablets.

JCMG NEW DOCTOR

JCMG WELCOMES DR. BRIAN JOHNSON to Internal MedicineJCMG is pleased to announce that Brian Johnson, MD, has joined the Infectious Diseases team with Donald Miller, MD, and Cathy Schafer, MSN, RN, BC, FNP.

Dr. Johnson has 14 years experience as a board certified infectious disease specialist. He has been in practice in Columbia since completing his training in 2000. For the past 12 years he served as the Infection Control Committee Chairman at Boone Hospital Center.

One of the many interesting things about Dr. Johnson is that he hadn’t original-ly planned to become a physician. When he started college in 1978, he majored in

forestry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. While in college, he took a job working the night shift in the hospital lab. Upon completing his degree he was

having difficulty finding a position in the forestry field so he took a new position at the hospital as a laboratory assistant and returned to school

to complete his second degree, Medical Technology. While working as a medical technologist, he became involved in a project that helped to develop a lab in an outpatient clinic setting. He discovered how much he enjoyed working with patients and it sparked his desire to pursue a career as a physician. Also at that time he met his wife, Susan, who is an internal medicine physician at Boone Hospital, and together they decided that he, too, should obtain his medical degree.

Dr. Johnson completed medical school and his infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Missouri-Columbia. While in training during 1999 and 2000, he won the Department of Internal Medicine Student Teaching Award “Outstanding Fellow.” He also completed an internal medicine residency at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis.

Dr. Johnson enjoys working with patients with complicated infectious disease conditions, especially those with HIV.

Dr. Johnson said, “My wife and I are both physicians and we made our home in mid-Missouri over 30 years ago. This is where we raised our children and built our careers and I am very pleased to be able to join Dr. Donald Miller and JCMG so that I can continue to serve my patients and colleagues here at home.”

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Johnson still gets to use his forestry degree in his hobbies and enjoys managing the woodlands on his farm and raising native plants in his garden.

JCMG CONGRATULATES

DR. BURNS EARNS SHAREHOLDER STATUSDavid Burns, MD, radiologist, has earned the status of shareholder with JCMG.

Shareholder status in JCMG is conferred by a vote of the board of directors. It requires that the physician have a growing medical practice and a high level of achievement in their medical field. Other factors include professional excellence, patient satisfaction, and collegial working relationships with their peers.

Dr. Burns joined JCMG in July 2011 after completing a fellowship in cardiothoracic radiology at the top respiratory hospital in the country—National Jewish Health in Denver.

At that time, he was the only radiologist between St. Louis and Kansas City with the additional cardiothoracic training.

A native of Kansas City, Dr. Burns received his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He also completed a radiology residency there.

Dr. Burns was attracted to radiology because of its advancing technology that enables doctors to pinpoint the presence and nature of disease and abnormalities. “It’s an ever-changing and improving field,” he says. “I like practicing as a consultant to other doctors. I’m honored to be a part of JCMG and look forward to being a part of this group for a long time to come.”

Sylvia Sabala, RNNominated by a coworker for the following reason:

Since joining JCMG Sylvia has proven herself to be an invaluable asset to the infusion team at JCMG. When JCMG decided to bring all infusion services in-house, there was much work to do. Sylvia worked tirelessly to transition the processes and procedures so that everything was safe and comfortable for patients and seamless for the back office as well. All of this occurred insuring the infusion center’s continued success. Sylvia is also an exceptional clinician, willing to go the extra mile, and a role model for others. Build Your Emotional VocabularySUBMITTED BY LISA FINLEY, RD, JCMG WEIGHT TREATMENT CENTER

Have you ever struggled to accurately name your feelings beyond simple words like “good, bad, sad, or angry?” If so, you’re certainly not alone.

The workplace has historically been a space where feelings and needs had no merit, and often have been perceived as a threat to productivity. Workers are expected to remain rational, putting a cap on their feelings and needs.

“Checking in with our feelings and needs meets our need for empathy,” says Ike Lasater. In so doing we are often far more productive than we could be when our needs are left unmet.

Building your vocabulary of feelings and needs can have a profound affect on your awareness of them in the moment. Keep your list of feelings and needs on hand. At the moment you’re unclear what you’re feeling or needing, use this “cheat sheet” to help.
