skills in an alternate environment. Apply leadership and team work skills related to physical

activities in an alternate environment. Students will learn practices to ensure minimum impact on

Location: Camp Gardner Operated by Scouts Canada-Chinook Council Alberta Camping Association (ACA) accredited, meets or exceeds all ACA standards Facilities include: flushing toilets, heated long

houses with beds (segregated by sex), on site groundskeeper, drinking water, kitchens

Tentative Itinerary May 4 Approximate Time Activity 9:00 Assemble in multipurpose area (buses to arrive at 9:15) • Remind students of expectations • Attendance • Final gear/medication check 9:30 Board buses and leave 10:15-11:00 Arrive on site • Unload bus • Form kids up in main area, basic rules of camp given by Blake • Drop off gear • Tour of campsite 11:00-11:30 Tug o war or brief large group game 11:30-12:30 Lunch (provided by student) and clean up (inspection) 12:30-1:30 Activity #1 Obstacle Course 1:30-2:00 Break (students can sit and relax or go for a short walk) 2:00-3:00 Activity #2 Frisbee Golf 3:00-3:30 Snack (provided by student) 3:30-4:30 Student Choice Students can use footballs, soccer balls, Frisbee, teatherball, rest, relax, read etc. 4:30-5:45 Walk to the river, throw rocks, hang out 5:45-6:00 Wash up, meet for dinner 6:00-8:00 Dinner (provided) 8:00-10:00 Campfire program (skits, songs, roast marshmallows, socializing, etc.) 10:00-11:00 Preparation for bed time, group discussions & day recap etc. 11:00 Lights out

Hazards (include but are not limited to):

Camping Hazards/Exposure to outdoors: Insect bites and stings, weather related injuries,

hypothermia, animal dangers, etc. Allergic reactions to plants, insects, food items, etc. Due to location outside of city, EMS will be slower to

respond to a medical emergency. Precautions:

Classroom instruction, first aid, cancellation or alteration of activities that become risky due to circumstances

Students will be given detailed instructions prior to activities and set geographical guidelines will be in place.

Supervisors will always be in close contact with each other and have the ability to easily and quickly call emergency services.

Transportation Hazards: Traffic accidents, breakdowns, delays

Precautions: Southland is an approved carrier with the

CBE that has safety checks in place Trip will be cancelled in the event of unsafe

road conditions

Games/teambuilding/physical activity Hazards: Rolled ankles, slips, trips and falls, small

cuts, bruises due to uneven terrain, roots, trees, ice, wet ground, etc.

Precautions: Students will be familiarized with terrain prior

to activities and made aware of potential dangers

Fire building and campfires: Use of matches--potential for burns, smoke

Safety Procedures Focus on prevention

Justin Fletcher & Ian Brown are chaperones: 1:13 ratio at most

High expectations for student behaviour clear and well practiced

Clear instructions, adequate prior knowledge Assess and mitigate risks Proper preparation (equipment)

Supervisors in close contact Teacher in charge and groundskeeper equipped

with cell phone at all times, land line available

Contingency Plans CBE and JBA both reserve the right to

cancel the camping trip prior to or on the date of departure “based upon the security, heath and safety conditions of the off-site activity destination and the travel to and from.”

Equipment list - Sleeping bag/pillow (no mattress required) - Underwear/long johns Shirts (long and short sleeves to layer) Comfy, long pants (convertible if possible, jeans not recommended) Runners/hiking boots (already broken in) Raincoat or water/wind proof jacket Fleece/hoodie/sweater Head-dress o Ball Cap or Sun hat o hat/toque Sunglasses Regular socks (extra pairs are useful), slippers/indoor shoes/thick socks for indoors PJs Water bottle (filled) Toiletries (toothbrush, comb, deodorant, etc.) Winter weather gear if needed (gloves, tuque, etc.)

Expectations Participants are required at all times to maintain

the highest standards of conduct. In case of serious infractions of the rules, the participant will be sent home at his or her own expense.

The Teacher-in-Charge in consultation with the other supervisors will determine the disciplinary action to be taken in the event that the conduct of any member is unacceptable.

Expectations

No participant, under any circumstances, may possess or use tobacco, alcoholic beverages, narcotics, marijuana, or any other illegal drug.

Necessary direction and instructions will be issued daily or at each location during the day. These instructions must be adhered to, to assure success and prevent complications.

Expectations

Personal funds and items, including, cash, clothing, shoes, etc., are the responsibility of the individual and should be carried by the participant in a safe and secure place at all times.

Ipods and other electronic devices are to be left at home during the camping trip.

Everyone is responsible for having his or her camping gear ready and in the proper place for loading, as designated by the supervisor.

Students will be respectful, at all times, of others and of the property of others (i.e. bus, tents, campground, washrooms, etc.)

Students are responsible for all work missed during their absence from regular classes.
