The Government have increased the age at which young people can leave education or training, which may have an impact on your business if you employ people of 16 – 18 years of age. “Raising the Participation Age” (RPA) is new legislation which means that young people must participate in learning until they reach 17. By 2015 this will rise to 18 years.

Nathan Sandhu Founder & Creative Director

Managing a creative studio is the realisation of a dream… being my own boss before I was 30! Running your own business can be a 24/7 challenge and I’m still very much hands-on when it comes to the design side of things. As you can probably guess from the company name I’m a huge jazz fan, and I love the classic Blue Note LP covers from the 50s/60s which are a prime example of great packaging that really established a recognisable brand identity. I’ve got 13 year-old twin daughters – which keeps me very busy and we all love nothing more than mooching around the streets of Shoreditch and soaking up the street art vibe.

Putting your company in plain sightThey say that the graveyard is full of unfulfilled visionaries with great ideas. Likewise, the business knacker’s yard is full of great products that died a death because they failed to find an audience. At Jazzbones we pride ourselves on helping our clients stand out from the crowd by creating bespoke design that speaks to the relevant target audience in the right visual language. It ain’t an ego trip, it’s business!

• Branding • Graphic Design • Online • Photography • Copywriting • Print and Production

Professional and PersonalisedThe nature of your company and your products/services will always determine the media you employ to attract maximum attention, whether that means a fully integrated digital campaign or a simple flyer for a door drop. Websites, advertising, branding, brochures, photography, POS … if it can look good, we’ll make it look good … wherever you need it to be.

Martin Bryan Senior Designer

I always knew I wanted to be a designer and since studying Graphic Design at university I’ve been lucky enough to work for some great agencies and also had a 2-year spell working on CAT®

projects. That design experience in a multinational environment has stood me in good stead in my specialist area: corporate design & branding. I’m a huge sci-fi fan and love my superheroes; some of my Jazzbones colleagues are sceptical but how can you be a designer and not like DC Comics or graphic artists like Leinil Francis Yu?!

Jon Ladd Senior Designer

My career began designing children’s books for Disney and Marvel. Apart from impressing my two kids that job also taught me some fundamental design lessons - never forget who your target audience is and make sure you get your key message across in a bold way. My other passion is photography – I’ve just been to the Dennis Hopper exhibition at the Royal Academy which was suitably mind-blowing! Working with Jazzbones’ photographers on client portfolios enables me to push my creative skills in some really satisfying directions.

Keiren Spencer Designer

As a young designer it is a real privilege to be working at Jazzbones and to be surrounded by such creative people. The second thing they taught me (the first was that Smoothies for lunch are a great pick-me-up!) is that you never stop learning, however experienced you are. These guys get really noisy and excited about innovative design! My speciality is CGI and motion graphics and I’m looking forward to offering Jazzbones clients some eye-catching opportunities to bring their products and services to life.

Jeff King Copywriter

I first met Nathan 12 years ago when he designed a stunning poster for one of my club nights - it still holds centre stage on my living room wall! The branding - ‘Motel Funk – Check in and dance’ – also stands the test of time. As a writer, I thrive on variety. My career encompasses direct marketing, corporate videos, football books and fiction, so I love the challenges presented by Jazzbones’ diverse client base. I just wish we got free samples … cruises from Imagine, kitchens from Miele, chicken wings from Tennessee Chicken!

Inspirational bespoke packages coupled with premium customer care are at the heart of Imagine’s success as providers of luxury cruise packages to the world’s most iconic destinations. We honed in on Imagine’s vision + Detail USP to create the ‘Every holiday a Masterpiece’ brand campaign, as featured extensively in the national press. The initial advertising campaign was so successful that the ‘Masterpiece’ branding has been rolled out across the whole range of Imagine’s marketing collateral for the UK and South African markets.

Our collaboration with Imagine is a prime example of the long-term relationships we build with our clients. Imagine initially approached us as a brand-new company in 2010 with this question: How can you help us stand out in the crowded cruise market?

Our answer was to create a striking brand personality that married the classic nature of Imagine’s cruise portfolio with the company’s contemporary tone of voice. Subsequently, we have delivered a diverse range of assets using that innovative brand template: cruise magazines, a refreshingly accessible website, customer booking communications and internal branding.

What does the client say?

Jazzbones created a striking visual concept for our new advertising push, allowing us to cement our positioning as a leading provider of luxury cruises in the UK.

Imagine Cruising - Managing Director

Imagine’s average cruise holiday sale price has increased by over 62% due to the premium nature of the new brand campaign.

ONLINE STRATEgy + WEBSITE DESIgN + DEvELOPMENT

Coate Water Care is a thriving company with half a dozen Care Homes in the South West and the Midlands. They pride themselves on being a family-run concern that offers quality care and

hired us to create a new website to reflect those values and the range of their services.

Given that people looking at Care websites are often doing so on behalf of vulnerable relatives, our remit was to create a site with a welcoming feel that inspires confidence in the provider. We achieved that by combining a delicate colour palette and carefully selected images with

relevant and easily accessible information. The end result is an attractive, mobile adaptive site which Coate Water Care will be able to self-manage and update as they continue to expand

and excel at what they do best … providing exceptional care.

Not every website we design is for a multinational behemoth. HM Adventure Golf may be the UK’s leading designers of bespoke Adventure Golf Courses, but they are also a relatively small

team that needed a cost-effective solution to their online requirements.

HM have constructed golf facilities from Las Vegas to Belgium to Yorkshire, but their business philosophy has been to deliberately keep themselves ‘small, sharp and agile’, a philosophy we tried to mirror as we created their new website. The resulting online signature is refreshingly unfussy and user-friendly, focusing as it does on the company’s core skills: planning, design

and construction of innovative golf courses. This flexible site is also mobile adaptive, features a Jazzbones-produced video, and is fully integrated with Social media.

When long-time Jazzbones client Miele decided to offer its customers a free 10-year warranty on selected washing machines, our brief was to create a campaign that reflected the premium nature of the product but also to focus on the unique nature of that industry-changing offer from the world-leading producers of quality domestic appliances.

The resulting designs delivered on both scores by combining bold typography and impactful product imagery with a quirky twist that complements the premium feel of the Miele brand. Full-page ads in the weekend supplements of the quality press were the focal point of a highly successful integrated campaign which also included trade advertising, in-store POS, and online advertising. In a word, Wunderbar!

Over the last six years our partnership with Miele has delivered a staggering array of successful campaigns, from online promotions that use vintage images from Miele’s own archive to contemporary visuals developed by Jazzbones like Wunderbar! The designs can be fun – the Valentines-themed ‘Perfect Pair’ Cashback campaign – or more prosaic – the meticulous detail that goes into the company’s quarterly Trade Catalogues – but our close working relationship with Miele means every single design reflects the premium nature of both the brand and the company’s products.

ANgLO WELSH WATERWAy HOLIDAyS

Images shot on location in Great Haywood, Staffordshire.

For this Anglo Welsh assignment, the Jazzbones photography team were charged with capturing the essence of canal boat holidays in picturesque images. In response, we delivered a portfolio of handsome location images that Anglo Welsh can now use as a brand asset both online and in printed materials, notably the company’s glossy holiday brochures. As you can see, the images are extremely effective at highlighting the allure of a relaxing holiday on the water.

Nathan Sandhu, founder and head honcho of Jazzbones Creative Ltd, recently celebrated twenty years in the design business … how time flies when you’re doing a job you love! Here Nathan reflects on what inspires him and why clients keep coming back to Jazzbones.

— you’ve probably been asked this a thousand times, but why Jazzbones? When Jazzbones started 9 years ago, I did a lot of work in the pub, club and entertainment sectors which included branding and promotions for events and DJs, so the name was really unique and fitted the projects and clients I was involved with at the time. As the company has grown it has helped us stand out as dynamic and forward-thinking. (It can be interesting sometimes when we say the name over the phone though lols!)

— Is there a typical client? Not really. We work with big clients, small clients, clients who know exactly what they want, clients who come to us with a blank page … one common denominator is longevity … and building great partnerships that deliver results.

We have found some niche sectors though like: Local Authority, Leisure and Tourism, Newspaper and Magazine, Charities and Not-for profit, Recruitment, Domestic Appliances, Property and Estate Agents, SME and Corporate.

We are really proud that some of these relationships have been developed over 5+ years and we are considered fundamentally part of the client’s creative team.

— How’s the technology changed? In my very first job back in 1993 the studio was very old school. We used drawing boards, rotoring pens, spray mount and Agfa-Gevaert processing equipment to produce bromides in a dark room that were then converted to film and printing plates. The emergence of the Apple Mac as a high powered design tool meant that the studio adopted these and very early apps like Quark, Freehand, Illustrator and Photoshop to produce simple layouts which we thought were the dog’s whatsits at the time.

— Are you still designing the same things? When I first started it was all about designing physical things: brochures, flyers and posters; we still do that, but now it’s as much about fully integrated design and branding with 360 thinking: how does a brand identity translate from print to the digital world and how does a brand engage with its audience in these media?

— What’s not changed? My Passion for great Design. I love the state-of-art Miele dishwasher with its knock to open feature, my iMac (still an Apple fan after all these years), and the Tate Modern. Simple but effective design that aims to make life better or more rewarding.

I’ve had the pleasure of working on some great client briefs including; Branding a Cruise company, Integrated marketing campaigns for a Domestic appliance manufacturer and online strategy for a Business Investment website, but there are always the deadlines!

— Who inspires you?I’ve always been inspired by the likes of Neville Brody and his typography and design style and the works produced by his Research Studio. The futuristic and eastern inspired works of The Designers Republic which were considered Maximum-minimalist back in the 1990s influenced my early works.

My family inspires me, from my twin daughters and my supportive partner and a long line of entrepreneurial uncles and aunties who have kindly mentored me along the way.

The strength that my step-father (and mother) has shown to come back from a life-threatening accident and his ‘just get on with it’ approach to his disability which should be a model for us all.

— How does being in Swindon impact on your business?Swindon born and raised, I am a strong believer that Swindon is a great place to live and do business. There are a world of opportunities here and some fantastic global and smaller businesses, schools and leisure facilities.

Situated in the heart of Old Town, in Cornmarket House, the Jazzbones studio literally used to be used as a corn, manure and agricultural dealership early in the 19th century. It was converted to office space in the 1990s and is now the home of Jazzbones, where our great designs grow. One of many of Swindon’s historic listed buildings it is a great location for Jazzbones and our clients that are based not only in Swindon but along the M4 corridor and beyond.

— What’s the key to your success? It may seem obvious but a key skill is listening – we never impose our vision, this is not a vanity project, it’s about getting to the bottom of the client’s needs; who their audience is and how best to communicate with them. I like things to look good, but at the core of every piece of our commercially focused design is the same key question, does this work for my client and their customers?

— How important is teamwork?20 years in the design business and working in a variety of design and branding agencies has given me a unique insight into creating a productive and creative working environment. From our core team of designers, project managers and writers to our approved specialist partners like web developers and photographers, we are able to get the best out of each project and provide the client with a truly cost-effective creative solution.

— What gives you most pleasure?Great results = Happy clients. Happy clients and a motivated team gives me the biggest reward. It’s always great to see your work on-line or in-store or even if you pick up a newspaper and one of your ads is in it. It’s still a buzz!

In-house vs. agency? It’s a question that often provokes heated debate in the world of business and design. Here

at Jazzbones we believe this argument misses the point, a bit like pitching Apple vs. Microsoft, Ferrari vs. Porsche

or Sean Connery vs. Pierce Brosnan. The question shouldn’t be either…or. It should be: What does my

business need at this particular moment in these specific circumstances? Do I need a partner who strikes

fear into the hearts of my rivals (Connery, naturally) or a wise-cracking charmer (Brosnan; can you imagine

Connery singing Dancing Queen?!)? Likewise, there are design and branding projects which require long-term

partnerships, while others demand a quick fix yesterday …. Luckily, Jazzbones does both.

As a dedicated graphic design studio you’d expect us to emphasize the advantages of working with an agency.

Teamwork: In-house design teams tend to be small operations or one overstretched staffer with enough work for a small army! By contrast,

Jazzbones is an extended team of specialists, each with his or her own particular design expertise. And as Germany demonstrated at the World

Cup, a well-integrated team of reliable professionals works better than a one-man band, even if his name is Lionel Messi.

Flexibility: Our experience working with a range of diverse clients means we are extremely flexible. It also means we are well-schooled in

troubleshooting. If you need fast and flexible that is exactly what you get. And unlike one-person teams, we are never shut for holidays and if your

deadline is urgent we will even take turns working late!

Strategic: Over the last decade we’ve built long-term partnerships with multinationals and small businesses alike. We understand brands and

marketing, we appreciate the importance of the classic 4 Ps, and we get integrated Social media. This gives us a genuine advantage over in-house

studios when it comes to seeing the ‘Big Picture’.

Cost-effective: Working with an agency like Jazzbones means you pay per project, you’re not bound to fixed costs or long-term salaries. This is a

huge advantage in the current economic climate when future workloads are so unpredictable. As an added bonus, we have invested in state-of-the-

art design technology so that you don’t have to.

Still not sure whether an agency is the answer to your design requirements? Why not contact us to discuss your brief and we can help you make the

right decision for you and your business.

B2B, USP, POS, CMS, SEO, MTV, KFC, WAG, BPM … we are real suckers for acronyms at Jazzbones, but few things get our pulses racing like CGI; for the uninitiated, that’s computer-generated imagery.

CGI (feel free to skip this paragraph if you’re a techie or don’t approve of cribbing from Wikepedia) is the application of computer graphics to create or manipulate images in art, printed media, video games, films, television, commercials and simulators. The visual scenes may be dynamic or static and even two-dimensional (2D), but CGI most commonly refers to 3D computer graphics used for creating scenes or special effects in movies and TV.

But what does CGI mean to Jazzbones clients who are more interested in its use as a marketing or advertising tool than the latest 3D action movie directed by some teenage whizzkid?

For a start, animation or simply rendered imagery 3D software gives us wider scope for creativity. It enables the skilled designer to create just about any imaginable effect, and Jazzbones’ in-house CGI guru definitely has those skills! Vector and standard 2D designs have obvious limits. Traditionally, multiple layers of images have been used to create designs that ‘represent’ the real

thing, rather like figurative painting. However, the realistic lighting and texture of CGI can create images that ‘replicate’ three dimensional reality (products, logos, background, etc.). An additional bonus is that CGI is both more accurate and time-saving.

CGI’s vector graphics grab your target audience’s attention by creating the sensation of depth and perspective. The images can be lifelike and at the same time larger-than-life, just ask anyone who has seen Transformers: Age of Extinction or Godzilla on the big screen! For marketing and brand managers, this design duality – lifelike & larger than life – opens up a whole word of creative possibilities. If you can dream it, Jazzbones can create it in CGI.

The benefits of CgI• Endless visual possibilities• Engages your audience• Perfect for creating animation sequences• Conceptual/visual diagrams• Enables realistic and unrealistic visual forms

IF yOU CAN DREAM IT, JAZZBONES CAN CREATE IT.

WISH yOU WERE HERE?

Over the last decade, we have worked with companies in just about every imaginable sector, but one of our core specialities is the travel and leisure industry. Britain’s Tourism Economy is worth £123 billion a year – a staggering 9% of GDP – and is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 3.8% in the next decade. That adds up to a vast number of people spending an ever-increasing amount of money on holidays and leisure activities. And we’re proud to say that plenty of that spending is on products and services wrapped up in irresistible Jazzbones design!

Our track record in the travel and leisure sector includes supremely effective campaigns for clients like Imagine Cruising, Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays, National Trust, Forward Swindon and Waterside Breaks. We are flexible, we are cost-effective and we deliver measureable results. Our graphic design for the travel sector encompasses every area of commercial design, from branding and logos, through websites, digital marketing, national advertising campaigns, glossy brochures, POS and display, photography and video.

Jazzbones’ ‘Every Holiday a Masterpiece’ branding and advertising for market-leading Imagine Cruising helped them to increase their average cruise holiday sale price by over 62%. We have delivered a diverse range of assets using an innovative brand template that combines the classic and the contemporary: brochures, advertising and CRM for the UK and South African markets.

Our digital marketing campaign for another long-term client, Anglo Welsh, was a key factor in the company’s 14.5% uplift in sales in the first two quarters of 2014. In six years working with Anglo Welsh we have collaborated on everything from holiday brochures to advertising and photography portfolios. Digital media is at the heart of Anglo Welsh’s communication strategy for which we designed a bespoke emailing campaign, online banners and a constantly evolving website.

Our recently launched website for HM Adventure Golf, the UK’s leading designers of bespoke Adventure Golf Courses, has led to a surge of online enquiries from new leads, both in Britain and further afield. But it’s not just well-known national and international clients we sprinkle our design magic on. When we created a fully integrated campaign to attract new business investment into our home town for local-government-sponsored Forward Swindon, online enquiries tripled in the first year alone!

Whether as long-term strategic partners with major players like Imagine and Anglo Welsh or as cost-effective troubleshooters for local operators like Forward Swindon and HM Adventure Golf, we pride ourselves on delivering design that captures the imagination of holidaymakers.

Our track record in the travel industry makes us the ideal partner to help you market your holiday brand and services to the right target market using the right channel at the right time. And forget about off-the-peg solutions, we may know the holiday industry but we also know that every client is different and we will treat your brief with

the individual attention it deserves.

What are you waiting for? The prize is £123 billion… or at least your share of it!

Let Jazzbones handle your branding and design and your clients will definitely answer ‘yes’ to that question.
