EEvery year the Jazz in the Valley Board of Directors works in conjunction with members

of the community to organize the details of this exciting event. During last year’s festi-

val, hundreds of people helped set up and take down the festival site, sell tickets at the

box office and venues, staff the beer garden, and market our posters, brochures and

T-shirts. It is incredible that so many people give their time and talent to make the event the best

it can be. Every element is carefully planned and executed by teams of volunteers.

Festival volunteers are the human force of each event. Our volunteers are the ambassadors

of our festival and our community — a job they take seriously and with great pride. Volunteers

have fun being part of the event —a true reflection of what Jazz in the Valley is all about.

We want to extend our sincerest thanks to all our volunteers, past present and future. You

make Jazz in the Valley happen!

OO ver the few years since Louis Pain and Sweet Baby James joined forces as King Louis

& Baby James, this exciting band has generated plenty of buzz. The Ore-gonian’s Marty Hughley has called the band “stellar” and “top shelf,” and rated their performance at the 2005 Waterfront Park Blues festival “exemplary.”

The line-up starts with Louis Pain. As a key member of the Paul deLay Band and Mel Brown’s popular B-3 Organ Group, Pain has led the Portland revival of the Hammond organ sound. And Sweet Baby James has been one of the most soulful vocalists in the North-west since the heyday of Portland’s legendary Williams Avenue scene in the ‘50s. Filling out this exciting group are the soulful Renato Caranto on sax; drummer Micah Kassell, and the late Paul deLay’s longtime guitarist Peter Dammann.

King Louis & Baby James will offer up their own brand of fun that’s sure to keep your feet moving during Jazz in the Valley. They are slated to play at The River @ Grand Central Friday, July 24 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

DD arren Motamedy’s illustrious style has thrilled audiences worldwide and has shared the

stage with the best of today’s smooth jazz artists such as Ray Charles, Boney James, Larry Carlton, Grover Washing-ton Jr. and Keiko Matsui.

Motamedy has been playing jazz since high school where he also played with a funk rock band. At Central Washington University he elected to focus his energy on playing the saxophone, clarinet and flute. He continued studying the clarinet with one of America’s premier clarinetists, Raymond Wheeler, and continued to refine his jazz abilities with National Jazz Educator John Moawad. Motamedy not only received the music department’s prestigious Presser

Scholarship but also graduated with a degree in music education.

“I cherish the fact that I am able to inspire other students as my teachers inspired me,” Motamedy said.

His first two CDs with his group Mottoretti achieved national success, landing spots on both the AC charts and the Jazz charts. His career was launched when he released his first solo album “Dangerously Close” in 1995. In 1999 Motamedy released “It’s All Good,” which won that year’s Jazz Album of the year, beating out compe-tition that included jazz greats Dianne Shuur and Kenny G.

Darren Motamedy will headline Sunday, July 26 on the Main Stage at the Rotary Pavilion from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

TT otal Experience Gospel Choir was organized in September 1973 at the Mt. Zion Baptist

Church of Seattle. The core group represented members of the Black Experience Gospel Choir of Roos-evelt High School and the Franklin High School Gospel Choir of Seattle. United, the choir became known as Total Experience Gospel Choir. When the choirs merged, the community’s children were invited to participate, and participate they did! The choir’s numbers grew to 108 within the first two months, with the youngest person being 8 years old. Today the choir’s ages range from 6 to 65.

Since its inception, much has taken place. The choir has become

known nationally and internation-ally. Their travels have taken them to 38 states, four continents and 22 countries.

Total Experience Gospel Choir has over 150 awards and recognitions locally, statewide, nationally and internationally.

Total Experience Gospel Choir is a regular performer of the National Anthem at many professional sporting events as well as halftime activities. They have been the featured group for seven seasons of Langston Hughes’ play “Black Nativity” at Seattle’s Intiman Theater.

This extraordinary singing group can be experienced Sunday, July 26 at 10:30 a.m. until noon on the Main Stage at Rotary Pavilion.

Shotwww.paulgreenblues.com

PP aul Green’s 36-year profes-sional career began in New Jersey in 1968 with The Black-

berry Booze Band. He also performed with other Jersey musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Clarence Clemons and Little Steven Van Zandt. Mov-ing to Oakland, Calif. in 1975, Green became a member of the house band at a popular blues spot, Eli’s Mile High Club, performing there weekly and recording two albums with JJ Malone and Troyce Key.

Straight Shot is a hard-driving blues, R&B and funk band that will keep you on the dance floor all night, or just as easily, let you just sit back and enjoy the music.

Gary Ballard: GuitarGuitarist Gary Ballard began his

musical career in 1964. Influenced by various musical styles including jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, Western swing, country and folk, he has established himself as one of the most diverse and accomplished guitarists in the Northwest. His talent for producing, arranging, and songwriting have placed him in high demand for recording sessions and live performances.

Howard Hooper: BassHoward Hooper’s bass has been

a longtime mainstay in the Seattle blues scene that includes playing with

national music legends such as Johnny Shines, Little Milton, and Jimmy McCracklin, among others. He has twice been awarded best bass player by the Washington Blues Society. His style sets down a solid groove that allows the band to dig deep into the music that will get you moving.

Les Merrihew: DrumsLes Merrihew most recently in both

2004 and 2005 was a Washington Blues Society nominee for best drummer. Another seasoned Seattle musician, he too has played for many years on the local scene and worked with a number of national acts including Pinetop Perkins, Albert Collins, Little Milton, and Charlie Musselwhite.

All in all, the four musicians that comprise Straight Shot combine their talents to create a soulful and dynamic sound.

Paul Green & Straight Shot will rock your socks at the The River @ Grand Central Saturday, July 25 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Bluesman Reggie Mileswww.geocities.com/nobro2/

RR eggie Miles fuses the influ-ences of Leadbelly, McTell, Charley Patton, all those

old blues and ragtime authors, with original songs and those of musi-cal acquaintances. The intensity and excitement he generates reflects the raw emotion of the rural Delta blues that rocked the juke joints of the 1920s and 30s. Combine Reggie’s powerful vocals and hand-built resophonic slide guitar bottle-neckin’ with the rhythmic huffs and moans of his harmonica and you’ve got a recipe for foot stompin’.

But to say that Miles is merely all of the above is to deny his lighter side.

His passionate past-time penchant for unearthing obscure narrative nuggets has made Miles one of the Northwest’s favorite funny-bone ticklers.

Now add to the mix his explorations into the eerie tones and subtle timbre of the musical saw and his uncanny ability to flex the hand tool’s razor sharp spring steel between his knees to produce panache. Miles risks life and limb by bending 213 treacherous teeth dangerously close to body parts both near and dear.

Don’t miss your opportunity to hear and experience Reggie Miles Friday, July24 at Rodeo City Bar-B-Q from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

www.randyhalberstadt.com

RR andy Halberstadt has been a major figure on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene for many

years. A multi-dimensional pianist, he is equally at home playing bebop, Latin, down-home blues, mainstream, free and eclectic jazz.

Halberstadt was born in New York in 1953 and moved to Texas in 1961, where he played trombone in junior high and high school. In 1971 he moved to Seattle to study oceanog-raphy at the University of Washington. It was during this time that he began playing piano.

After a few years of lessons (primarily with Seattle’s jazz piano “sensei” Jerome Gray), performing

in local clubs, and teaching privately, Halberstadt joined the faculty of Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 1983.

On the strength of his large reper-toire, great sense of swing, and acute listening skills, Halberstadt has estab-lished himself as a first-call accompa-nist for jazz vocalists. While his own recordings showcase his formidable pianistic skills, they also establish him as a first-rate composer. “Inner Voice” features Halberstadt’s compositions in the jazz trio format, which range from blues to Latin to polymetric.

Don’t miss your opportunity to hear and experience the Randy Halberstadt Trio Saturday, July 25 from 9 p.m. to midnight at the Clymer Museum.

CC harles White has a lot of energy and has worked hard to get where he is now. White estab-

lished himself as a blues artist in Texas, singing in Houston clubs. He was working for Don Robey, Duke/Pea-cock Records, in Houston, which led to his performance as opening act on a national tour with Bobby (Blue) Bland. White wanted a change of pace from Texas, so he decided to give the North-west a chance to experience his blues.

White says he enjoys doing Texas rhythm and blues and up-tempo, dance music complete with searing guitar and screaming saxes. When he began his search to form a group of motivated, professional musicians, White spent long hours in hot blues clubs, singing with artists and searching for the right combination of talent.

Bill Blackstone: alto sax Bill Blackstone (alto sax), “Sax-Man”

for the Charles White Band, is a born and raised “Seattleite.” His background started with saxophone lessons at the age of 5. Since then, Blackstone has performed locally and abroad with many bands. Now he feels quite comfortable with the Charles White Band. In his words, “the guys in the band are a blast to work with, and Charles, well he sets us on fire every time.” Bill’s captivating sax sound is a result of 25 years of affection and dedication for his calling.

Scott Lind: GuitarScott Lind (guitar), born and raised

in Seattle, began playing guitar in his sophomore year at Ballard High School. He played in a number of Seattle bands including Eleventh Avenue. It was then that he had the pleasure of opening for B.B. King at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in 1986. Lind’s influences include B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.

Rick Ulsky: Keyboards, organ Rick Ulsky (keyboards and organ)

played for 17 years with Chuck Berry, toured with The Association and played back up for Stevie Wonder. Born in Seattle and currently residing there, Ulsky’s passion for his calling is quite apparent.

Ricky Johnson: Drums, vocalsRicky Johnson (drums and vocal) has

toured with Paul Revere and the Raiders and The Wailers. His on-stage antics are a must-see and his drumming and singing are pleasantly entertaining.

Steve Raible: Bass, vocalsSteve Raible (bass and vocal) has

worked the circuit for the last 20 years, and brings his seasoned experience to the band nightly.

The Charles White Band will headline on the Main Stage at the Rotary Pavilion on Friday, July 24 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Bring your dancing shoes!

JJ ohn Stowell is a unique jazz guitarist influenced as much by pianists and horn players as he is

by other guitarists. His original take on harmony, chords and improvisation sets him apart.

Stowell began his successful career in the early 1970s with private study with guitarist Linc Chamberland and pianist John Mehegan. Both men were valuable mentors to Stowell, allowing him to play with them as he progressed in his development. Several years later he met bassist David Friesen in

New York City, and they formed a duo that recorded and toured prolifically for seven years. The duo continues to perform 30 years after their first meeting.

In 1983, John and David joined flutist Paul Horn and Paul’s son Robin Horn (on drums) for a historic tour of the Soviet Union. This was the first time in 40 years that an American jazz group had been invited to play public performances in Russia.

Enjoy an evening of fabulous jazz guitar with the John Stowell Duo on Saturday, July 25 at Rodeo City Bar-B-Q from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

EE cstasy in Numbers writes and performs unique music. Its sound is modern, combining

hints of jazz, R&B, funk, reggae, latin, rock and world beat music. Many of the melodies play with interlocking guitar, bass and drum riffs and offer mood inducing harmonies. Their recordings and performances utilize the power of imaginative improvisation to create dramatically experiential environments.

Mike Mattingly: GuitarMike Mattingly is a guitar player with

a wide range of playing experience. While getting his degree from CWU, Mattingly was the guitarist for John Moawad’s Jazz Band when they won first place in the West Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival in Berkley, Calif. Currently Mattingly teaches guitar lessons, freelances and does studio work in the Seattle and central Washington regions.

Rick White: BassRick White’s background as a classi-

cally trained composer and jazz bassist combine to make both his composi-tions and his playing truly unique. White received his master’s in music composition from Northern Illinois University and is currently ABD at the University of Northern Colorado. White

is the Director of instrumental music at Olympic College in Bremerton where he teaches music theory, jazz theory, bass lessons, and conducts both the Jazz and Wind Ensembles.

Garey Williams: Drums Garey Williams has steadily built

a reputation as both a world-class drummer and uniquely gifted educator. With a graduate background in Percus-sion Performance and Jazz Studies at Central Washington University, drummer Williams has been a fixture in the Northwest scene. He is the author of two books on drumming and is the founder of Ecstasy in Numbers.

WW ay ahead of her time, Alice Stuart blazed the trail for women in rock and roll as

one of the only females in the country to write her own music, front a male band, and play lead guitar on national and international circuits. Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Dick Waterman, once remarked, “There would be no Bonnie Raitt without Alice Stuart.”

Alice spent the mid-60s and 70s, one of the most creative musical periods of the century, making music with some of the greatest artists of that time. She toured the US and Europe with her band Snake and as tour support for Van Morrison. The list of artists she played with in that period of time is an awesome one and she won rave reviews from Billboard, Guitar Player, and Rolling Stone magazines for her recordings and performances.

Alice began performing professionally in Seattle during the early 60s. Her LPs on Arhoolie (1964) and Fantasy Records (1970 and 1972) are landmark record-ings. Her songs have been recorded by many other artists, some of whom are Jackie DeShannon, Irma Thomas, Jimmy Rabbit and the late Kate Wolf.

When listening to Alice Stuart today, her broad range of experience both vocally and instrumentally is obvious. After an extended hiatus in the 1980s

to raise her family, she returned to recording and performing in 1996.

Her newest studio CD, “Can’t Find No Heaven,” was released in 2002 and was nominated for both a Grammy and a Handy Award in 2003. This CD was chosen as “Best NW CD” by the Washington Blues Society in 2004, and she also won the award for “Best Songwriter” and was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. In 2005, Alice was given the award for “Best Seattle Guitarist.”

Alice Stuart and the Formerlys kick-off the Saturday afternoon festival (July 25) on the Main Stage at the Rotary Pavilion from noon to 1:30p.m.

JJ on Hamar is a versatile artist who’s ability to find a tasteful, unique voice in any musical

situation has made him a staple in the Northwest music scene. Hamar’s friendly nature, sense of humor and work ethic has kept him busy as a free-lance bassist in multiple genres.

In 2003 Hamar released a mostly solo bass CD on Pony Boy Records featuring his own compositions as well as arrangements of songs that he

grew up listening to. “I looked back to those songs that

upon hearing for the first time I could not stop singing in my head,” Hamar said.

In addition to his role as a leader, since moving to Seattle in 2001 Hamar has been active in the role of supporting bassist. He has been featured on many recordings.

TT hree-time nominee and recent winner of the Earshot Golden Ear Awards’ Northwest Vocalist

of the Year, Pettis’ rich, warm vocals and understated phrasing inspires comparison to Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn and Carmen McRae. Her music has been described as “deli-ciously soulful” by Cadence Magazine.

Pettis inherited a passion for jazz from her family while growing up in Gary, Ind. Now residing in Seattle, she enjoys sharing her unique talent with listeners at home and abroad.

Pettis’ smooth, engaging style garners consistent praise in the area’s finest jazz establishments. Her debut CD, “May I Come In?” was released in August 2007 on the OA2 Record label to an enthusiastic national audience. In addition to national radio airplay, this recording has also been showcased on XM Satellite Radio and Music Choice television.

His jazz saxophone is heard through-out the Seattle area with numerous records and CDs to his credit.

Ward grew up in Bremerton where he played his first gig at the age of 13 with a group called The Rhythm Rockets. He went on to earn a degree in music at Central Washington University, all the while performing. Ward is an innovator of jazz and funky, up-tempo tunes and has played with such musical greats as B.B. King, Lou Rawls, and Richie “Alto Madness” Cole.

Ward still leads his band when the occasion calls for it. Ward was a

featured saxophonist in the movie, “An Officer and a Gentlemen.” Performing as a single, Ward has been enthusiastically received wherever he plays. He can gear a performance to a variety of situations ranging from soft, background “dinner” music for intimate get-togethers to more up-tempo tunes for parties, wedding receptions, and the like. For two years Ward played and hosted Sunday night jazz at the Airport Red Lion Hotel, appearing with many special guests including Dee Daniels, George Cables, Jessica Williams, Nancy King and John Stowell. Ward was invited to play with Diane Schuur at the Blue Note in New York City. As he says, “Just going to the Blue Note is wonderful, playing there is like a dream come true.”

The Danny Ward Quartet will perform Friday, July 24 from 9 p.m.-midnight at Pink Catering. Catch them again at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 on the Main Stage at Rotary Pavilion.

AA lma Villegas’ lustful voice brings you an exquisite and passionate selection of Latin

styles and flavors. From the bouncy feel of “Perfidia” and “Quizas, Quizas” to the passionate tango version of “Besame Mucho,” the smooth and sul-try bossa nova “Waters of March” and the salsa sound of “Mi Tierra” or “Oye Como Va,” these tunes have captured hearts and entertained internationally for decades.

Villegas started her professional music career by performing with some of Seattle’s most popular Latin music bands including Cambalache & Yerba Buena. This experience prompted her to create a band that offered a more diverse selection of music focusing on the traditional bolero (Latin ballad) and cha-chas, mid-tempo Latin jazz standards, a variety of Cuban rhythms and bossa novas.

The Alma Villegas Quintet features Alma Villegas on vocals, Ben Verdier

on keyboard, Ricardo Guity on Congasand Bongo, Pedro Vargas on Timbales and Steve Okimoto on bass. Their first CD was released in June 2006 and received an overwhelming response sending their audiences in an excur-sion of Latin soul and tradition

You can experience the passionate sound of Alma Villegas on Friday night (July 24) from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Dakota Café and again on Saturday, July 25, at 3p.m. on the Main Stage at Rotary Pavilion.

DD rummer Gary Hobbs is a native of the Pacific North-west and lives in Vancouver.

He has played professionally for over three decades and has appeared on over 50 recordings. Hobbs became a legend in his own time as the drummer who joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra right out of college, following such class acts as Gene Krupa and Shelley Manne.

Hobbs is very active in jazz educa-tion, teaching at the University of Oregon and traveling all over the

United States doing clinics, concerts and jazz camps with the help of Bosphorus Cymbal Company and Yamaha Drum Company.

At 59, with 38 years of gigging behind him, he is still the guy who drives big bands, undaunted by tempo changes or polyrhythms. But with smaller groups, Hobbs is also the guy on the cajon set, who coaxes organic Latin rhythms from wooden boxes and goat hooves.

You can experience the great sound of the Gary Hobbs Group on Saturday, July 25 from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at Pearl’s.

LL enny Price is a saxophonist, sing-er/songwriter, arranger, music educator and clinician. Born in

Omaha, Neb., he began his musical life showing great promise on clarinet and oboe before finally discovering his true love--the saxophone. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, Price resumed his musical career singing and playing keyboards with bands in Baltimore, Md. and Washington DC. In 1986 he returned to metro Detroit on a mission to make up for lost time in his chosen profession.

Price teamed up with engineer Mike Moore to record four original composi-tions in late 1989. The result was his debut solo recording “From My Heart.” The self-produced release, which has sold thousands of units to date, features him on saxophone, keyboard, drum programming and vocals. Building upon his solo success, Price established credentials as a creative

and versatile sideman on recordings with a wide variety of artists.

So far Price considers his ongoing touring and recording with Grammy-winner Earl Klugh to be the highlight of his career.

Price relocated to Ellensburg in 2004 to pursue a master’s degree in music at Central Washington Univer-sity and continued to strengthen his credentials as a music educator in the Pacific Northwest by teaching private lessons, presenting workshops and clinics for students from middle school through university level. In 2005 he formed the Galileo Quartet as an advanced student ensemble which performed at the 2005 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and shortly after released their debut CD “Live at the Starlight” Galileo Quartet evolved into one of the hottest jazz acts in the region.
