The Columbus Jazz Orchestra (CJO) was formed as a vehicle to create performance opportunities for jazz musicians in a big band setting. Forty-eight years later, the CJO is considered one of the world's finest jazz orchestras and a model for success, presenting big band jazz and world-renowned guest artists to thousands each year.
The flagship performing ensemble of the Jazz Arts Group, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra consists of musicians who are highly regarded as performers and educators across the country and around the globe. The CJO presents over 20 subscription concerts each season in Columbus, Ohio.
By incorporating contemporary arrangements into its repertoire and commissioning new arrangements and masterworks for jazz orchestra, the CJO promotes the future of big band jazz and cultivates the dynamic, adventurous spirit that has kept audiences coming back again and again.
The CJO has toured Europe and has collaborated with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet Columbus, Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Opera Columbus, and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.
The CJO is led by world-renowned band leader and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, former lead trumpet for the Count Basie Orchestra. Stripling has been a featured soloist with orchestras including the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, the National Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He has been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and performs at jazz festivals throughout the world. He has performed and recorded extensively with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, and Lionel Hampton, among others, as well as the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the GRP All-Star Big Band.
In 2020, Byron Stripling was appointed Principal Pops Conductor of the famed Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, holding the Henry and Elsie Hillman Principal Pops Conductor Chair. This is only the second time in the orchestra’s storied history that a Principal Pops Conductor has been named. In this new role, Stripling succeeds Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Grammy, Golden Globe and Pulitzer prize-winning composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch.
“It Has Been an Honor to Play With So Many Wonderful Musicians.”

Long time Columbus Jazz Orchestra trumpeter Bobby Everhart announced his retirement earlier this season. We were sad to lose Bobby from our ranks, but we treasure the many years of dedicated service and stellar musicianship he brought to the CJO.
Bobby Everhart was born in Columbus on May 31, 1945 to a musical family. Bobby’s father, Dr. Robert Everhart, had a 35-piece big band called The Doc Everhart Big Band for 50 years. The Doc Everhart Band held dances twice a year at Valley Dale and the Aladdin Shrine Mosque, and the members of the band would invite their families and friends – these fun events attracted as many as 2,500 people.
This experience undoubtedly furthered Bobby’s love of music. At age three, Bobby’s dad got him started on the drums and at age eight began piano lessons. At age ten Bobby found his true musical love, the trumpet. He took trumpet lessons from one of his father’s closest friends, Ziggy Coyle. When Bobby was in the 9th grade, he joined his father’s band.
Bobby graduated from Linden-McKinley High School in 1963 and attended The Ohio State University, majoring in business, performing in the Ohio State University Marching Band and the Ohio State University Jazz Band. In 1966, he left OSU to go on the road with the Americana Brass show band, a take-off of the popular Tijuana Brass band. For six years, Bobby traveled with the band across the United States, Mexico, Canada, the British West Indies, Germany, and Switzerland. In 1972, he left the group to tour with the Holiday on Ice Show for two years as lead trumpet.
Bobby left traveling on the road in 1974, settling down in Columbus. He continued playing the trumpet, performing with many local bands. During this time, he also played with Les Elgart, Buddy Morrow, and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. In 1975, proving that music and math truly go hand-in-hand, Bobby went to work for the Franklin County Auditor’s office for the next 18 years.
In 1978, Bobby and his cousin, Larry, started a pop/rock band, Energy, which lasted 20 years. Bobby joined the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in 1983. His favorite moments with the CJO were the trips to Seville, Spain and to Vail, Colorado and the opportunity to meet and back up some of the greatest trumpeters in the world: Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval, Byron Stripling, Doc Severinsen, Clark Terry and Jon Faddis. “It has been an honor to play with so many wonderful musicians.”
In 1993, after leaving the Franklin County Auditor’s office, Bobby began working for the State of Ohio Department of Taxation.
When not working his day job and running his two youngest girls to dance lessons, national dance competitions, basketball practices, basketball games, and numerous church events, Bobby finds the time and enjoys playing lead trumpet with Street Players, a Columbus-based party band.

Jazz has played a major role in bringing people together. It’s a language, an expression of ideas, a means of communicating. When jazz speaks, it conveys thoughts. It moves some intellectually and others emotionally. In our community you’ll find every form of art from all genres of music, dance, visual arts, spoken word, etc. And for those who observe it, art affects them the same way ... it crosses boundaries and transcends barriers, so that it’s shared by all. I’m Bobby Floyd. Music is my art and there’s no place I’d rather make it.
Learn more about Bobby’s story and other Columbus artists, performances, exhibitions, concerts, public art and more at ColumbusMakesArt.com.

With his second album release, “Solidarity,” Cleveland-born, Juilliard-trained drummer/composer Jerome Jennings explores resistance and resilience through the prisms of Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and LGBTQ rights.
