Why 4-H? Is 4-H for me? You

may hear all kinds of things about 4-H like, “Oh that government youth program.” “I have been try-ing to keep the government out of my life, all my life, and my kids are not going to be in that.” “4-H that is for those kids wanting to raise livestock and it is the same as FFA.”

For many years people have tried to stereotype 4-H and the youth that participate in the pro-gram, unsuccessfully I may add. Texas 4-H contacts a little more than 500,000 youth. Youth in 4-H find that they have endless opportunities to grow in the area of their expertise…yes youth can be experts.

In 4-H youth find they have freedom to embrace a sense of power at an early age, and chal-lenge current directions such as operating systems, procedures, and law of the land. We should cherish our youth because they are growing up in a different and changing environment than adults did. Youth have the ability to see things as they are growing up.

I challenge you to look at your kids and ask yourself if this is true. Why 4-H? The 4-H program offers an education like no oth-er. Because the 4-H program has the flexibility to involve just about

anything “respectful” to learn and has limitless potential for every youth. Youth in 4-H can learn about livestock and agriculture, yes. All of the Agriculture and Natural Resource agents in Texas have agriculture and/or natural resources backgrounds and the majority have a graduate degree in the field.

Likewise any agent that admin-istrates the 4-H program will have complimentary degrees to support the program. The County 4-H pro-gram is what the people involved make it to be. If you want to learn rocket science, 4-H says go for it. If you want to be the Governor of Texas and learn the process, 4-H says go for it. If you want learn business and be a leader, 4-H is in your county as a platform for you.

During the formative develop-mental years of a youth. say 8 – 19 years old, youth are on a steep incline of knowledge, behavior, and attitude molding. These years often define what a youth will do once they get that first job or go on to higher education. The de-velopment of these youth starts much earlier at home with parents. Parents provide the bases of what the youth knows, how they be-have, and their attitude.

Parents, you make an impact, so parents please teach your kids by modeling exemplary behaviors and attitudes to them. They will

be modeling them for years after they are not living with you. 4-H can help your kids explore what interests them. Through illustrat-ed talks, method demonstrations, and science they can teach what they have learned.

4-H youth are motivated to have a positive change in the world. The time invested in their 4-H projects will not be forgotten when they are adults. Most will seek even more information about that topic throughout their lives. This coupled with the ability to speak up through our public speaking classes will allow them to express what they have learned to others and be a benefit to the community.

4-H is for everyone! If you are an adult and you have a skill of almost anything “respectful” that you would like to share with youth, you have the opportunity through 4-H. If you are a youth and have the desire to learn about science, math, writing, speaking, teaching, history, sports, and just about any-thing else, 4-H is for you.

Please share your thoughts with the Jasper County Extension of-fice about what interest you and will benefit the community and the world we live in today. 103 E. Houston St. Jasper, TX 75951. Phone: 409-384-3721 or email: [email protected] or Fa-cebook: Jasper County 4-H.

Texas Food Handlers Course: Food Safety is in your hands!

The Texas Department of State Health Services ac-credited food handlers program is recommended for all food service workers to promote food safety. The class is a basic overview of food safety principles and practices that are necessary to be sure you serve safe food.

It covers storing foods at proper temperatures, how to avoid cross contamination between things like raw meat and fresh salads, basic hygiene (wash your hands!) and more. You take a test at the end of class and then a cer-tificate is mailed to you.

The 2-year certificate is accepted anywhere in Texas. Anyone preparing, serving or selling food under the Tex-as Cottage Food Law must have a card, or be under the direct supervision of someone with a card.
