Everything we have, everything we are, and everything

we will become is a gift from the Lord. As faithful

Catholics, we are called to return our time, talent, and

to Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the Lord, and through

the willingness to share our gifts, we provide support to

ministries that serve

DAILY EUCHARISTIC REFLECTIONS In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint Peter Julian Eymard

(August 1, 1868), founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, a team of religious and lay associates began

writing daily Eucharistic reflections based on the scriptures for the daily mass and the legacy of Father Eymard.

These have been sent out each day to the email addresses of religious and lay members of the Eymardian Family.

We are happy to announce that these daily reflections are now available on our parish website.

If you want to access these reflections please . . .

May these reflections be an inspiration to your own Eucharistic spirituality and deeper understanding of the message of Saint Peter

Julian Eymard whom then Pope John-Paul called an “outstanding Apostle of the Eucharist” when in 1995 he inserted Saint Ey-

mard’s feast into the liturgical calendar of the universal Church, to be observed on August 2.

Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

DSF 2020 - Letter from the Cardinal My dear friends in Christ, We bring our greatest

gifts to the Lord for the common good. That is

one of the most important meanings of our faith.

Christ is our role model for giving love to others,

helping others and making sacrifices for others. I ask you today

to consider a gift to DSF. DSF serves the common good

throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The more

than 60 programs covered by this fund require all of us to con-

sider the needs of others. Whether it is the elderly, sick, incar-

cerated or poor, the Church has a duty to offer the compassion

and healing power of Christ Jesus. Our local Church also has

the continuing responsibility to seek and nurture those who are

considering entering into the religious life. The Office of Voca-

tions works tirelessly with men who want to enter the priesthood

to serve God and all of us. It is a long process, including back-

ground checks, psychological testing and interviews before a

man can be accepted to enter the seminary. It is generally seven

years of studying theology, pastoral work and an intense spiritu-

al formation before Ordination. Please keep praying and giving

of your own treasury so that we can have the best vocations pro-

gram. Serving others also involves knowing, accepting and in-

spiring the spiritual needs of our fellow parishioners. The Adult

Confirmation program is an important offering of our Office of

Evangelization and Catechesis. This newly re-vamped program

allows adults, who were not confirmed in their youth, to deepen

their knowledge of their faith. Every year some 1,400 men and

women are confirmed on Pentecost Sunday becoming new wit-

nesses for Christ. Your DSF gift helps to support this important

program. In the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, more than

50% of our Catholic people are of Hispanic origin. The Office

of Hispanic Ministry is the conduit for pastors and churches to

enable parishioners to more fully participate in their faith and

in the leadership of their parish. They accomplish this by offer-

ing opportunities for training, conferences and experiences that

promote effective involvement and service from this growing

Catholic population. I thank you for your gracious commitment

to DSF. With gratitude to God for your faithful discipleship and

praying for God’s abundant blessings upon you, I am

YOUR FAITHFUL SHEPHERD,

DANIEL CARDINAL DINARDO

ARCHBISHOP OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON

Servir a

DANIEL CARDENAL DINARDO

ASH WEDNESDAY

Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, pre-

scribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along

with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win

recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been em-

braced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for

almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many

react with a grimace or slight shudder—even now, years

after official obligations have been reduced to a minimum!

No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement”

sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful peo-

ple, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten

Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from

passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works

of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John

Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do

you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor per-

son, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining

honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the

saints help us keep such a Lent!

SAN POLICARPO (C. 60-155)

Policarpo respondió: “Ochenta y seis años he servido al

Señor Jesús y él no ha hecho nada malo. ¿Cómo crees que

voy a blasfemar contra mi Señor y redentor? Soy cristiano”.

quemado.
