JaroOrigins of JaroIts original name wasSalogorSaro.It was also referred to as "Ilaya" or "mountain/dry land" together withLa Pazwhich was referred to as "Ilawod" or "sea/wet land".It had been one of the richer areas ofIloilo cityeven during theSpanishcolonial period (1521-1898) and probably the richest town of the entire colony. It was also the center of religious and economic power in theVisayasduring the Spanish rule.Jarois one of the six districts ofIloilo City, in the province ofIloilo, on the island ofPanay, in theWestern Visayasregion of thePhilippines.

It is a former separate city that lends its name to theArchdiocese of Jaro, which covers the provinces of Iloilo andGuimarasand is themetropolitanof Western Visayas, before it merged withIloilo Citywhen it was incorporated during theAmericanadministration in the Philippines.

Jaro is the largest of all districts ofIloilo City. The district ofLa Pazwas a former part of Jaro before it became separated. The Jaro annual Catholic Feast of Nuestra Seora de la Candelaria (Our Lady of the Candles) which is held every February 2 is well known in the Philippines.

Casa MariquitIn the old district of Jaro in Iloilo stands a 200-year-old house where the wife of former vice-president Fernando Lopez Sr., Maria "Mariquit" Javellana-Lopez, once lived. The house was built by her banker grandfather Ramon Javellana, and it served both as a residence as well as a bank. Robert Lopez Puckett, a great-great-grandson who is now the owner of the house, removed a plank of themolavefloor in the master bedroom and showed us where the bank & money used to be kept. In 1910, a vault was installed there and it still exists today.

Jaro Evangelical ChurchAcross the street is the first Baptist church in the Philippines, the Jaro Evangelical church. Founded in 19, it sparked the protestant movement in Iloilo and founded one of the biggest educational institutions of in the region, Central Philippine University. Popularly known as CPU, was found in 1905 and is the only school in Iloilo City to be named as a tourist destination by the local government.Jaro Evangelical Church
