Workshop on Findings in Japan

108 Indian youths with various hopes and feelings participated in the JENESYS Programme,

which was held in Japan for ten days. The Programme provided school visit, home stay program

and other interactions with Japanese youths and people, in which the Indian youths learned

Japanese culture, people and environmental conservation efforts in Japan. To wrap up the

Programme, on 9th of June, workshops entitled “Workshop on Findings in Japan” were held by

Miyagi, Kyoto, Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima and Okinawa groups, respectively.

The Workshop was designed to achieve the following points.

① To make visiting youths realize their findings(knowledge/awareness) by putting their

impressions at a level beneath their awareness into words

② To facilitate the visiting youths retaining their acquired findings(knowledge/awareness) and

keeping the motivation for mutual understandings

③ To intensify their findings (knowledge/awareness) individually by sharing and exchanging

findings with others

④ Finally, to create a message from discussed findings in each group, with which they will be able

to contribute to deepening mutual understandings between Japan and India in the future

Each group vigorously exchanged their frank opinions in the Workshop, which provided

opportunities for the visiting youths to intensify mutual understandings between Japan and

India.

Workshop Reports are on the following pages.

Workshop Report

Date:9th. Jun. 2008 Group:Miyagi

Ⅰ Findings about Japan

(Category:People )

Self-centered. Punctual. Humble. Good dressing sense. Losing traditional values. . Practical.

Law obeying (Traffic rules). To be ready to learn new things.

(Category:Objects )

Good traffic system. Eco-friendly tech. Inflation. Good maintenance of infrastructure. Arcade,

Sky scraper. Pictorial representation/explanation of how to use high-tech machine.(Toilet),

Shinkansen.

(Category:Others )

Language barrier of Japanese people. Manga in Japanese only. No discipline in school.

Removing shoes even before entering the school premises. Nice blend of technology and

Culture, Taking care of nature.

Ⅱ Details of Discussion(Topic: 3 )

A unique blend of technology and culture in the young of Tokyo (Eg. we saw many young people

visiting the shrine in Asakusa) are more self-centered and have no time to acknowledge other

people. Tokyo has lots of skyscrapers as we expected and people are keen to learn English but

the system has failed to do so. The reason is that there are not enough means for learning the

language.

Ⅲ Wrap-up/ Conclusion

Overall Japan had been a wonderful experience for all of us while we taught our Japanese mates

something. We two got to learn a lot in return. Overlooking each other’s loopholes, we two

countries really same a lot closer in what we can call a true exchange of culture and above all a

rare bond of attachment, individually ,as well as on the whole.

topic into 3 sub topics with hospitality at the home stay, university, and hotels.

III. Wrap-up/Conclusion

* The most interesting aspect we have found and need to learn is being “functional.”

Everything is well organized. We want to make use of this experience by sharing it with our

family, Japanese language friends, and other friends so that they understand more about Japan.

Indian Youths’ Comments

<Miyagi Group>

○In simple words, this programme gave me some of the best memories of my life.

This whole questionnaire echoes out my gratitude as JENESYS for me was---

J - Joyous

E – Excellent

N – Never ending

E – Enriching

S – Sensitive

Y – “Yokoso”ing(welcoming)

S - Successful

○The programme helped me to learn the Japanese culture and few words of their

language directly through the Japanese locals. It was learning and enriching. trip.

The trip helped me to fulfill my dream of coming to Japan.

○This programme is really successful one. Through this programme we were able to

learn and exchange our culture, religion etc. with the Japanese culture. The idea

of home stay was the best. The host family was very kind, polite and humble to us.

They were also interested in Indian culture. I had a great time with my host family.

In my opinion the JENESYS programme is a big success and very helpful to all the

participants and has beem a great support for the growth of economy of both

countries. Lastly this programme has really made my dream come true to visit

Japan.

○It’s been a great learning experience for us. To experience Japanese life and live

life in that way even just for a day, has been my dream and thanks to JENESYS, I

have been able to fulfill it. What I learned was not the difference in technologies

between our two countries. I learned that Japanese are the perfect role models

for a country like India. The most striking thing has been the way in which Japan has

made traditional culture goes hand in hand with development. There were many

things that I learnt, and of them all, I will try to utilize even the littlest of thing in my

personal life and aid the growth of my nation. My India!

○JENESYS is an education programme that offered a variety of interesting facts

about Japan especially its nature, and it was so good. It was a fulfilled study

programme which has equipped our minds with the courage that would help us and

our country. We made a family for us in two days in Japan and only JENESYS

Page 20: Japan Network of Exchange for Students and Youthssv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07indiaJE.pdfJapan ‐ East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Japanese Language Batch

made that. We will have contact with them and help the well-being of the world.

JENESYS has helped us taste the essence of the nature, made us feel touching

heavens every time we visited natural spots.

○I believe that this has given me a great opportunity to realize the way of life in

Japan and would also like to thank one and all for the unrelenting support given to

me. I also got an opportunity to face Japanese life first hand and it has opened up

my horizons for future studies and career opportunity in Japan. It helped my

public speaking and the other relationship building procedure and it also increased

my confidence to speak to people. After this I have now got friends not only in

Japan but also all over India.

Page 21: Japan Network of Exchange for Students and Youthssv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07indiaJE.pdfJapan ‐ East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Japanese Language Batch

<Kyoto Group>

○This programme was the best opportunity for us to know Japan & Japanese

language so much closely. The university we visited in Kyoto, we attended some

lectures & it was so much exciting. The best part of this programme was the home

stay. We hardly able to live in Japanese house for 1 & 1/2 day, but they became so

much close to us, that we felt that we know each other before so long time. The

places we visited was so beautiful that it is just impossible to just to write on

papers. On the whole, it was the best part of my whole life.

○I learned lots of things by this study tour, different programmes brought different

experiences & knowledge for me. In the beginning we learned the lecture which let

us know the details about Japan & Japanese. By the Shinkansen experience we

came to know the advanced technology, at the time of home stay I learned the

Japanese culture & enjoyed with the Japanese people. Traffic & roads &

transportation were so developed we were impressed by all & had great fun. I

brought a memorable lifetime experience for us, which is unforgettable forever.

○JENESYS is an extremely fascinating programme that showed us what really is a

“group co-ordination”. We enjoyed a lot as a group and experienced various

situations together. In short all of us made friends for our life both in Japan and in

India.

○People are being the extraordinary self motivated and self respected. Discipline

plays a vital role in Japanese people. Whether it may be punctuality, rules &

regulations which are assigned by the Government is kept properly. The major

thing which I was impressed totally is Nature. I can’t imagine this type of

naturalistic & realistic nature in Japan. The maintenance of nature clean & tidy is

really praised. In the mean time we should say about the people life style & their

qualities. I was really impressed about the time management of the people. The

major expectation was fulfilled here in economy & infrastructure in Japan. It is too

advanced. We can’t compare it with other countries. I would like to continue my

studies in future.

○The JENESYS programme has provided an excellent opportunity to Indians and

Japanese to know about each other. Keeping in mind, India’s rapid economic grouth

in recent years, there should be greater cooperation between the two, so that

Indians as well as Japanese can benefit. Moreover, India as well as Japan have

democratic political institutions and are in favor of peace. Thus, the two countries

should cooperate more through such programmes for peace and political freedom.

Apart from the above purpose, the JENESYS programme has helped us to know

Page 22: Japan Network of Exchange for Students and Youthssv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07indiaJE.pdfJapan ‐ East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Japanese Language Batch

about Japan. But only if the duration could be increased by a few more days, then

the knowledge could be even better.

○Programme is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Japan and Japanese lifestyle.

Home stay was fantastic and one wishes it could have been a little longer. It was

perfectly organized. I was never uneasy at any point of time. However it was

extremely mechanical to have eaten Naan twice a day for a week. But I will not

complain, as Naan was delicious as well. Workshop was good, and the hand-on

experience with Yuzen dyeing was a very good experience. My overall impression on

Japan has been greatly enhanced,

Page 23: Japan Network of Exchange for Students and Youthssv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07indiaJE.pdfJapan ‐ East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Japanese Language Batch

<Osaka Group>

○This programme has changed my overall ideas about Japan. I found that Japanese

people are working throughout the day. The traffic control system is excellent. I

should also mention the railway system, which was at the utmost level of

technological advancement. This program has helped me to enrich my knowledge

about Japanese life style, Japanese culture, their technological advancement, their

punctuality, trustiness. I think that I can adopt their all greatness in my life also

which may help me in further improving the INDO – JAPAN relationship. I learnt a

lot of things from this programme. I never had an idea of visiting abroad before, and

during this program, although I was alone, but never feel any out home feeling. This

programme really teaches me a lot in my life. I am greatly grateful to JENESYS

program.

○This programme has widened my views about Japan and gave me the opportunity to

experience in flesh and blood the life and webbing of the Japanese people. I

confirmed my concept about the polite behavior of the people and turned it beyond

my thought. The hard working nature of the people and their aesthetic sense has

made this nation a paradise. The cheerful and kind behavior of the people is audible.

The tea ceremony observed by the Japanese people in this modern time showed

their devotion and patience. Their love for work irrespective of sex deserves much

praise. This nation is simply great.

○ The very first impression I had of Japan was the attention to minute detail in every

aspect of life. The Japanese strive for perfection and combine it with a desire to

achieve efficiency. The achievement of aesthetics and harmony between every

facet of life, planning and foresight is reflected in every activity. Japanese have

become experts at globalizing local knowledge and vise versa.

○The JENESYS programme is simply superb. Even though it was a short programme,

it was planned in such a way that we could visit to various important and traditional

places. We got a good overall view about the prefecture we had visited. We had also

the experience of traveling in all modes of transport also. The two things that were

most impressive were the exchange programme in university and home stay.

Through university visit, we could understand the excellent infrastructure facilities

offered in the university. Through home stay, we had experienced the life style of

Japan and their culture. By visiting to various places like Osaka castle, museums,

Edo-Tokyo museum etc. and through the lectures we could understand how people

had put their hard work to re-construct the historical monuments. Since I am

learning Japanese language, this programme had provided me a good chance to

Page 24: Japan Network of Exchange for Students and Youthssv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07indiaJE.pdfJapan ‐ East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Japanese Language Batch

improve my spoken skills in Japanese. At the end of the programme, we also

learned the punctuality.

○I think this will be one of the unforgettable experiences in my life. It was a very nice

experience to be amongst the Japanese family, live in traditional Japanese style

house, taste typical Japanese food, and experience the daily life of Japanese like

cleaning the surroundings of one’s house, the work place and the way Japanese

people get together to enjoy food and outings together. Though I was afraid that

Japanese people have lost their culture due to western influence, however it was

different when I experienced it on my own. I feel Japanese people have still

preserved their culture despite ultra modern development. The excellent green

cover maintained in and around Tokyo is a perfect example that Japanese people

still love and care for nature. Overall, it was a very sweet experience which I will

treasure and cherish throughout my life.

○Before coming to Japan I knew much about Japan from other people / things/

means of communication. But this programme helped us to know about this

beautiful country deeply & it was enough to change our minds about the things

which we thought ‘uneasy’. The rural & urban areas are equally well-developed in

infrastructures & amenities. The smallest unit of this country has the same facilities

like in the huge cities like Tokyo. People are very keen about the preservation of

nature. They are hard working, but I found that there is a difference between the

behavior of people in Tokyo & cities like Tsuyama. The home stay was really

enjoyable & I succeeded in forming a bond between me & my home stay family.

The experience of wearing KIMONO & tea ceremony was just wonderful. Visit to

Mimasaka University was informative. We enjoyed some Japanese food. The

Japanese tea ‘Ocha’ I liked very much. We were well-taken care. The

accommodations and convenience facilities were arranged nicely. We are very

thankful to the organizers for this, and think ourselves very lucky to participate in

this.

○A wonderful and rewarding experience with a variety of things to learn. Immense

hospitality of the Japanese was a wonderful and life lasting experience. I was able to

develop a relationship so strong with my host family that parting from them was a

truly emotional moment of my life. The visit to the Mimasaka University was a rare

and enjoyable event since I would never experience it as a tourist. My intention of

coming to Japan was not a free visit however a learning experience and that is

exactly what I was able to achieve. An experience to learn was so much so fast. I

hope to visit Japan, with my family if possible, someday and once more experience

the love of the people here.

○Through this visit of 10days I learnt many things about Japan. Many of my

misunderstanding about Japan were cleared. Home stay was the most wonderful

experience I had during this visit. I found that Japanese people are really very kind,

helpful, and punctual. They are eager to help you out of your problems. People are

hardworking, sincere. I found vast difference in the life of metros like Tokyo &

countryside – Okayama that I visited. People are very mechanical in cities but

very emotional, caring in countryside area. But in both cities & villages

development is there. All the facilities like electricity, water, roads, trains etc. are

there in village also. Main feature of Japan is it is developing by maintaining the

balance of nature & development. It has made vast progress in technology.

Japanese electrical products, robots, trains are famous worldwide. All these things

are cleared through this visit of 10days. It was really a nice experience for me, and

now I am thinking of coming to Japan again to start my job in Computers as it is so

progressed country in technology.

○This is a real good exchange programme where participants learn about the life

style and culture of Japanese people. We, being the language students, felt really

good as there are more facets to Japanese people that world already knows.

Through Japanese people are little shy initially. You can become real good friends

with them after knowing them closely. Especially the home stay experience was the

best part as I felt that the affection and respect that they have towards us is

appreciable. Accordance to me, the main reason of Japan being the developed

country is that they give highest priority to the nation. They make sure it gets

resolved as soon as possible. I have very good impression about the whole

exchange programme and I will help everyone in achieving their goals and cooperate

with other participants as well.

<Hiroshima Group>

○I was very glad to visit Hiroshima, as this is the place which faced the unfortunate

day of atomic bomb explosion. It increased my urge to work for spreading peace and

happiness. The touching experience of visiting the atomic bomb dome and the

peace memorial park led to feel the pain and agony which the Japanese people went

through during the 2nd world war. We would like to have a world free from atomic

bombs. The cultural exchange programme with the university students was very

impressive. We came to know about the Japanese style of teaching. I was very

happy to see students at every tourist spots. This kind of practical observation is

very important for deepening the knowledge about any place. I am very lucky and

proud to get a chance of home stay with Japanese family. It was a sweet and

memorable experience. I learned a lot from them and will always cherish these ten

happiest days of my life.

○I am very glad to be the participant of this programme. This was a very great

programme that none of the participants will forget in his life. Here we learned

many things about Japan, its culture, its people, life style and many more. The best

and most impressive part was the home stay that I felt it was my own home. The

hospitality I received was awesome. Hiroshima, the world itself indicates peace I

believe.

○I am grateful to the Japanese government for introducing JENESYS programme.

This study tour has made me a better individual as I have been fortunate enough to

learn precious values & habits from Japan. I respected the work ethics, culture of

hard work, sincerity, punctuality of the Japanese. I hope that when I get back to

my country, I will be enthused to practice civic responsibilities of making India a

better nation. This trip will be memorable to me all my life & I am thankful to be a

part of this elite exchange practice and the absolutely excellent management of the

entire programme.

○It is excellent programme to promote friendship and co-operation between India

and Japan. It was my first visit to Japan, and I feel myself blessed, to have got an

opportunity to visit Japan, where people not only respect their elders and peers,

but receive an outsider with an equal warmth. I would like to add that high

technology and economic power of Japan left a deep impact on me. The success

story of Japan can be attributed to it’s honest, hardworking and devoted citizens.

The mountains and rivers of Japan have a unique appeal and beauty, uncommon to

any other place in the world.

○Before coming to Japan, I just know about Japanese language. Now, when I actually

Page 28: Japan Network of Exchange for Students and Youthssv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07indiaJE.pdfJapan ‐ East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Japanese Language Batch

experienced Japan, I became more able to understand Japan and Japanese people.

Through this programme I became able to understand the value of peace, hard work,

love and kind heartedness and patience also. As a member of Hiroshima group I

visited Atomic Bomb Dome and peace memorial park, and able to understand what

destruction brought by atomic bomb and how again Japan and Japanese people

rises from ashes to the world greatest power.

○For the past two years, the impression of Japan has always been good. I always

appreciate the way this country has built itself. However I was skeptical about the

reasons why & how this country is there where it is today. After coming here, I can

say I have many reasons to cite. The professionalism, the helping attitude, the

honesty which is reflected in their work, are well enough reasons for their progress.

I am highly impressed by Japan and I would like to follow things I have learned from

Japanese people.

○When I came to Japan, and saw the city through my eyes I was really amazed to see

cleanliness on the roads and people’s duties right from my first day visit. I feel

that Japanese people are well aware about their duties towards country. Everybody

thinks about the development of country and what to contribute something.

Japan has got a lot of advanced technologies which have uniqueness in the world

compared to my country. Japan is far more developed and society is well-civilized.

Hospitality especially “home stay” was always to be remarkable event in my life.

But while talking with host families I felt a great danger Japan is facing in future. No

doubt Japanese people have a high level of life style, but they are not much aware

about the need of family. I think this has contributed to the problem of low birth rate.

This programme has given me unbelievable amount of confidence. Exchange of

ideas with Japanese people and students were very interesting as we use to have

discussions for hours on each others, life style and culture. This programme, in real

sense, provides a great opportunity for us to know about Japan and at the same

tome use these experiences in development of my country.

○Since I started studying Japanese language I am very fond of Japan. I consider

Japan as my own country. So my coming here I came to know many angles of

Japan. Japan is very good country, but as you have asked some opinion, there are

some questions or problems which I found during my stay. Japan is progressing a lot,

and it will progress also. But as I heard some are discussing negative points. So

please pay attention to these problems, so Japan is good country and I don’t like

that anyone can say bad things to it. Problems are ①Younger people smoking in

number, ②Paying not that much attention in lectures.
