Date Just before Christmas Loretta Rolle, LeAnne Siddell and I traveled to Dallas, TX for the third session of our Reformed Church in America Missional Engagement Leadership Community. As I?ve previously mentioned, we are involved with five other churches in our denomination as we think strategically and tactically about changing the focus of our churches from internal to external. While at this session, I was prodded to consider once again a question that I?ve been pondering since our previous session in June of 2015. It?s a question that is timely as we begin a new year: W hat would it mean for New Hope Church to be, not the best church in our community, but the best church FOR our community? Much of what I?ve read and heard over my years of ministry has emphasized distinguishing the church in the community - bigger and more beautiful facilities that ?wow? the first time visitor, catering to their every comfort and convenience; more and better programs that meet every conceivable human need and want; abundant staff at low cost that will do the lion?s share (all?) of the ministry so that church members and attendees are served rather than serve. You get the gist of what I?m saying. Now, I wonder. I wonder how we would use our resources if we wanted to be the best church for the community? How much would we direct toward our own programs and facilities? How much of our resources would we use to meet human need and transform lives in our community? I wonder with whom we?d collaborate? Would we work with those who are ?like? us, with the end goal of building up the membership of New Hope Church? Or would we deploy people to work with multiple partners so that our community begins to approximate more and more of the kingdom of God? I wonder if our emphasis would be on gathering or sending? Would we approach marketing New Hope from the perspective of ?come and see? or would our emphasis be ?go, ser ve and tell?? I wonder what our desired outcomes would be? Would we measure the impact of our ministry by the number of people who come through our doors each week? Or, would our ministry impact be measured by the number of people who are deployed to serve in our community? It?s not only a new year, it?s a new day. While spiritual interest is high, many people no longer look to the church to find spiritual vitality and authenticity because they perceive the church to be irrelevant or disengaged from their community. I welcome this new day as a wakeup call for New Hope Church to pray, to think strategically and to work tactically to the end that we become the church God intends for us to be, a church whose heart is for our community. Just before Chr istmas Loretta Rolle, LeAnne Siddell and I tr aveled to Dallas, TX for the thir d session of our Reformed Church in Amer ica Missional Engagement Leadership Community. As I?ve previously mentioned, we are involved w ith f ive other churches in our denomination as we think str ategical ly and tactical ly about changing the focus of our churches from internal to external.

Whi le at this session, I was prodded to consider once again a question that I?ve been ponder ing since our previous session in June of 2015. I t?s a question that is timely as we begin a new year : What would it mean for New Hope Church to be, not the best church in our community, but the best church FOR our community? Much of what I?ve r ead and heard over my years of ministr y has emphasized distinguishing the church in the community - bigger and more beauti ful faci l i t ies that ?wow ? the f i r st time visi tor, cater ing to their ever y comfor t and convenience; more and better programs that meet ever y conceivable human need and want; abundant staff at low cost that w i l l do the l ion?s share (al l?) of the ministr y so that church members and attendees are ser ved rather than ser ve. You get the gist of what I?m saying.

Now, I wonder. I wonder how we would use our r esources i f we wanted to be the best church for the community? How much would we dir ect toward our ow n programs and faci l i t ies? How much of our r esources would we use to meet human need and tr ansform l ives in our community?

I wonder w ith whom we?d col laborate? Would we work w ith those who are ?l ike? us, w i th the end goal of bui lding up the membership of New Hope Church? Or would we deploy people to work w ith multiple par tner s so that our community begins to approximate more and more of the kingdom of God?

I wonder i f our emphasis would be on gather ing or sending? Would we approach marketing New Hope from the perspective of ?come and see? or would our emphasis be ?go, ser ve and tel l??

I wonder what our desir ed outcomes would be? Would we measure the impact of our ministr y by the number of people who come through our doors each week? Or, would our ministr y impact be measured by the number of people who are deployed to ser ve in our community?

It?s not only a new year, i t?s a new day. Whi le spir i tual interest is high, many people no longer look to the church to f ind spir i tual vi tal i ty and authentici ty because they perceive the church to be i r r elevant or disengaged from their community. I welcome this new day as a wakeup cal l for New Hope Church to pray, to think str ategical ly and to work tactical ly to the end that we become the church God intends for us to be, a church whose hear t is for our community.

ASH WEDNESDAYWednesday, Febr uar y 10 ? Ser v i ce of Holy Com m union and Im posi t i on of Ashes at 7:00PM

The season of Lent, a time in the church's calendar for r ef lection and preparation as we await the joy of Easter, begins Wednesday, Februar y 10. We w i l l offer an Ash Wednesday Ser vice of Holy Communion and Imposition of Ashes at 7:00PM in the Sanctuar y.

Come begin this most meaningful season in worship w ith us.

Come join us for dinner on Wednesday evenings throughout the season of Lent. This is an oppor tuni ty for us to fel lowship w ith one another as we share a meal together. Each week the supper is hosted by one of New Hope's small groups. There w i l l be soup, salad, macaroni and cheese, and desser t. At the end of the meal we w i l l gather in song and one of the Elders w i l l lead us in a time of devotion and prayer.

This year the theme of the devotions are "The Parables of Jesus: Being Taught the Word." Each week we w i l l encounter a parable of Jesus and ref lect on how we can be Recipients of the Word, Active in the Word, Welcoming w ith the Word, Challenged through the Word, and Found by the Word.

The Lenten Soup Suppers w i l l be on Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM in the Fellowship Hall from Februar y 17 through March 16. Invi te a fr iend or neighbor - al l are welcome.

Then Jesus told them what they could expect for themselves: "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You?r e not in the dr iver ?s seat - I am. Don?t r un fr om suffer ing; embr ace it. Follow me and I?ll show you how. Self-help is no help at a ll. Self-sacr ifice is the way, my way, to finding your self, your tr ue self. What good would it do to get ever ything you want and lose you, the r eal you?" (Luke 9:25-27, The Message)

Ear l ier this month the Barna Group released new statistical data concerning the state of discipleship in Amer ica. When asked "What are the top bar r ier s to spir i tual grow th?" both practicing Chr istians and non-practicing Chr istians r esponded w ith "spir i tual grow th w i l l r equir e a lot of hard work" and "the general busyness of l i fe." Perhaps you can relate to their r esponses.

Yes, l i fe is busy, and yes, spir i tual grow th w i l l r equir e a lot of hard work. I 'm not going to tr y to deny that r eal i ty. After al l , Jesus never said a l i fe of discipleship would be a fast or easy process. Instead, Jesus said this: "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves, and take up their cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23) Fol low ing Chr ist, grow ing spir i tual ly, is a dai ly action.

Last month you received an Adult Ministr y newsletter w ith al l the di f ferent studies and oppor tuni ties happening this Winter. A few are highl ighted in this newsletter, and al l are l isted online at NewHopeWor ship.com /Adul t s. Some classes w i l l r equir e a l i ttle outside r eading and others are designed for you to simply come and engage in God's word. I pray that you w i l l cr ack your ow n bar r ier s to spir i tual grow th this season, and take par t in a discipleship oppor tuni ty here at New Hope Church.

Women of al l ages are invi ted to our annual New Hope Wom en's Ret r eat on Saturday, Februar y 20 from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at The Countr y Club at Muir f ield Vi l lage in Dublin. Come enjoy a day of r est w i th your sister s in Chr ist as we ref lect on Psalm 62 together and redefine, r ediscover, and re-envision what r esting in the Lord tr uly means.

Registr ation begins Sunday, Januar y 10 at the church and online at NewHopeWor ship.com /Wom ensRet r eat . Cost is $50 per per son; scholar ships are avai lable.

IN CHRISTSundays at 10:15AM, January 3 through February 7Facilitated by Kevin and Beverly Robinson

Ephesians is r efer r ed to as the Queen of the epistles of scr ipture. The Book of Ephesians descr ibes the King and al l that is avai lable to bel iever s "in Chr ist." Through Chr ist we have a way into a place of favor, blessing, fr eedom, peace, and promise.

This place is punctuated by an unconditional love from our creator. This unconditional love was and is per sonif ied in Our Lord Chr ist Jesus. This per sonif ication is captured in a few quotes from S.M. Lockr idge's sermon "That's My King."

He's the centerpiece of civilization. He's the highest personality in philosophy. He's the supreme problem in higher criticism. He's the fundamental doctrine in true theology. He's the cardinal necessity of spiritual religion...Do you know Him?

These words, put into modern day terms, are the central theme of the Apostle Paul 's Letter to the Ephesians. Come discover what "In Chr ist" means for us individually and corporately as we explore the book of Ephesians together.

TOXIC CHARITYSundays at 10:15AM, January 3 through February 7Facilitated by Rev. Steve Norden

As fol lowers of Jesus, we want to r each out and share Chr ist's love w ith those who are in need. We remember Jesus' words: Truly, I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me. The question that w i l l be the focus of this class is "How do we help w ithout hur ting those who are the r ecipients of our help?"

Using the book by Rober t D. Lupton, Toxic Char i ty: How Churches and Char i ties Hur t Those They Help (And How to Reverse It), the class w i l l discuss the fol low ing topics:

SOUL KEEPINGSundays at 10:15AM, January 3 through February 28Facilitated by Kathy Dunkin

When is the last time you thought about the state of your soul? The health of your soul isn't just a matter of saved or unsaved. I t 's the hinge on which the r est of your l i fe hangs. I t 's the di f ference between deep, satisf ied spir i tual i ty and a r estless, dispassionate fai th. In an age of mater ial ism and consumer ism that tr ies to buy i ts way to happiness, many souls are star ved and unhealthy, unsatisf ied by false promises of status and wealth. We've neglected the eternal par t of our selves,

focusing instead on the temporal concerns of the wor ld.

Uti l izing John Or tberg's book, Soul Keeping: Car ing for the Most Impor tant Par t of You, the class w i l l r ead and discuss the fol low ing topics:

- What the Soul Is- What the Soul Needs- The Soul Restored

Par ticipants w i l l discuss two shor t chapter s a week. This class is for those who long to discover their spir i tual center and grow deeper in their r elationship w ith God.

WHEN GOD'S PEOPLE PRAYSundays at 10:15AM, January 3 through February 7Facilitated by Sarah Burke and Kathy Wisne

Romans 12:12 says we are to "r ejoice in hope, be patient in suffer ing, and persevere in prayer." In his letter to the Phi l ippians, the Apostle Paul also r eminds us, "do not wor r y about anything, but in ever ything by prayer and supplication w ith thanksgiving let your r equests be made know n to God." What does this mean for us individually and as a church to "per severe in prayer " and "make our r equests know n to God"?

As Pastor Jim Cymbala states in his work on prayer, "The Lord cher ishes his people, and out of that love f lows his desir e to bless them and mature them. It is through these unmistakable blessings that other s can w itness God's goodness and declare, 'Look what the Lord has done!' When the Lord's method of accomplishing his purposes (in prayer ) includes you and me, then i t is both a wonder ful pr ivi lege and a sacred awesome power of a prayer -answer ing God."

This class w i l l explore this spir i tual discipl ines of prayer, as we seek to understand the why and the how of prayer.
