CHALLENGING CONVERSATIONS January 18 – Wednesday, 10:00am—12:00 noon Individuals with developmental disabilities face multiple challenges to successfully manage health, education/work, housing and social life, particularly in times of transition like adolescence to adult life. This transition is also an at-risk period for mental health issues. This train- ing was designed to assist people supporting individuals with devel- opmental disabilities to use Motivational Interviewing (MI) strategies to improve engagement and communication while supporting changes. Presenter: Liz Barnett. Liz Barnett has 10 years experience training and coaching individu- als to use Motivational Interviewing skills in their work settings. She has trained service coordinators and counselors, social workers, pro- bation officers, case managers and a growing number of interven- tionists working on university based research studies. Liz received her Master’s of Social Work from Boston University in 2000 and her PhD from the USC’s Department of Preventive Medicine’s Institute for Prevention Research. SUICIDE ASSESSMENTMarch 23 – Thursday, 10:00am—12:00 noonThis training reviews the steps of Suicide Assessment. Attendantswill review signs of suicide intention, as well as the process of eval-uating suicide risk. The training is intended for Direct Support Pro-fessionals, administrators, friends, and family members. Variousreasons behind suicide attempts and suicidal ideation are dis-cussed. Caregivers will be provided opportunity to role play vari-ous scenarios and consult with fellow colleagues andprofessionals regarding this critical subject matter.Presented by the Crisis Response Project

CPI Class DescriptionNon-violent crisis intervention is a safe,nonharmful behavior management systemdesigned to help professionals provide for

the best possible care and welfare of individuals, even dur-ing the most violent situations. This course will assist theprofessional to develop skills in early and appropriate in-tervention for potential crisis situations while keeping inmind the care, welfare, safety and security of all involved.Participants should wear comfortable clothes, must bephysically able to participate, must take a written pre andpost-test independently, and must attend a ll days in orderto complete this class. No exceptions!

CPI Refresher Class DescriptionThis class is offered to all service providers who have a cur-rent and valid CPI certification card. The CPI refresher courseis for those individuals that have already taken the class andneed re-certification. Please bring your current CPI certifica-tion card to this class. Participants must take a written preand post test independently.
