MEMBERSHIP RENEWALSThese have come in steadily by post, the first one was a Mr B Collinswho enclosed a note saying “I bet I’m the first” – he was – give hima star!

THE CAMPING WEEKEND MOPEDI think will be sold at last to Lewis Gatt who wants it as a paddock bikefor his racing weekends, Riders for Health and John Charman will bedelighted!

NEW YEAR TRIAL – a day of enrolment January

5th 2014The first trial of the 2014 nearly wasn’t after 40 days and nights ofrain it nearly got cancelled, it was at Rome Woods, say no more! However the forecast improved and team Ajays, Mike, Phil TW andAdrian B, laid out a ‘considerate’ course, commented on by many whohad been anticipating a disaster but found it spot on for the rainsoaked conditions with ½ way scores 44, 35, 28 – perfect – well doneAjays!

But the day dawned with a heavy frost, my van doors were frozen upand had to be levered open with a screwdriver, then the de-icer ranout! Worse still for John Y who had a puncture to contend with andbad news, the caravan heater didn’t work. Nevertheless signing ongot started with first man, Russell Benton, who hadn’t been for 20years, did I remember him? – No! Stuart E said Tony F and Phil W

were on the way, when they arrived Tony said New Years’ resolutionwas to do every trial, he’d had good news on Jamie over Xmas, thecancer hasn’t regrown, he’s still on medication for a year but alreadylooking forward to the camping weekend and contemplating doing aparachute jump!

Duncan A rejoined, hadn’t ridden for a year as the bike was stuck atthe back of the garage, Mike R didn’t ride as he’s suffered severalinjuries including falling off a kerb, so he just paid his membership. As did Harry Ross who revealed the big yellow van had gone to a newhome – we’ll never recognize him now in a flashy Fiat van. Clint andSean didn’t attend, both not recovered from Andy’s trial last month?Adrian puts up the 2014 team lists to which several new names willbe added this year. Rich E entered but did not go up to W. still waitingfor Tom H he said, Steve H photographer arrived just as Mike H wassigning on and thanked him for the fame his recent pictures bestowedon him!

We had 34 entries and thehooter set them off at 10 am,Tim arrives 20 minutes after,he’d been reversing his reartyre for the occasion. Rainwas forecast for pm so hopewas that riders would get amove on – they did. Adrianfinished a lap first and waspleased he had only dropped6, with Adam on 9, due tobrain fade, his Dad said. MickD setting off for lap 2 was ina hurry “it’s going to getmuch worse” was his com-ment. Lewis G went up toBlue route on his Gasser hav-ing found yellows easy, hecouldn’t understand whymany riders needed so manyrevs to get up hills. John Phad to correct his cards and 2cleans became a 5 and a 2. Ican’t see the holes he said tome. Andy D was on 8 after 2

laps and said some whites are hard – he should know! Ian Mcfinished early and thanked Mike for a good event. Tim H finished with

his gear lever in his hand having to ride the last bit in 4th when hecouldn’t refit it.

Your reporters legs were not over enthusiastic to view the sectionsacross the thick mud, pity as he may have seen Nigel’s clean lap. Nota lot of people know that after a muddy event the cards all have to becleaned before they are totalled, this was done by club Treasurer, alias wife Jean. Sometimes cards get stuck together which happenedto No. 27 Nigel Bray, seeing only one card he got listed as DNF,grossly unfair after his valiant ride – he phoned, we found the other

card – his position of 9th moved to 2nd, so although he’s slipped a fewrungs on the ladder, perhaps 2014 will be his year! Elaine had lookedat the weather and decided the fireside was the best bet.

Tony F had flashed around his 4 laps as he’d been told to get backearly to go to the pictures, hurrying did no harm, he came first of theWhites with Steve F and Andy D following but there were only 3 marks

between those 3. Tom B on 30 ml was 4th, that’s a good ride fromhim, well clear of next in line course setter Mike H. On the Blue route

Tom H led the way, Stuart E and Tim were level in 2nd place with RichE only 1 behind. No wonder Ian was pleased with his ride, he evenled Phil TW the course marker by 2 marks. 18 marks later cameGraham who had been seen sliding off one of the climbs.

Yellow entries were considerably down from the December trial – 22down to 9 after so many blues found sections a bit tough. So there’sJohn Y back in top spot as usual with Nigel Bray after his clean laps

just 5 behind, no wonder he phoned in about his DNF! Paul A was 3rd

by 1 mark then Mick D. We hadn’t seen Cassie lately so she’s quite acomeback gal, at 28 ml she’s well up on Adam H who had the brainbad! Reds by the look of the scores suffered most where only 2finished, AndyF on 66 and Duncan’s lad Dan P on 131 – both needsome practice!

Most were finished, Phil TW waiting to clear up and joined by AdrianB who’d come back to help – “There’s a noise coming from your van”says Phil, inspecting, he yanks off some wires – the battery was flat! Thanks to John P Adrian B and the guy who knew where the bonnetcatch was on Phil’s Suzuki Jimmy (it’s Derek’s vehicle really) – the van

got going again so I shot off home with the car in 2nd gear, revvingand fingers crossed.

Thanks to team AJAYS for a good days sport and thanks to all ourmembers who had rejoined eager to do their teams setting out tasks.

A HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR TO ALL, KEEP YOURFEET UP AND ENTER ALL HR EVENTS FOR A GOOD RESULT ON

THE 2014 LADDER!

And finally a contribution for last month, that just missed thedealing ,……… Tis The Season

Not of goodwill but where, as your venerable Chairman I seek toredress the evil done by our resident Hobbit as you attempt to ride asection. His powers are waning. This is evidenced by a comment madeby Mick Dunstan “I was riding this section, which I had previouslycleaned, as Dick arrived and I promptly got a three. However nexttime round I cleaned it whilst Dick was still there.”

I have reported in the past that Dick is a Hobbit and that he is wellknown to the MOD and JK Rowling amongst others. Further researchprovided by the Tolkein Foundation has confirmed that there is afamily link between the Baggins and the Husbands. Now we all knowthat Gollum seeks revenge on all the Baggins clan and anyoneconnected with them. Apparently he has escaped and is roamingMiddle England as we speak.

As an aside if you see a pale shifty eyed creature roaming around, probably dribbling and smelling really awful do let me know and I willinform the relevant authorities so that safety can be restored. Onecaveat, before you report a Gollum sighting please make sure thatyou have not mistaken him as your local MP looking for a lost

expenses claim. There is a marked similarity between the bearing ofthe two.

One thing that always puzzled me was why did Dick’s forbears go toMiddle Earth. Well more extensive research on my part has providedthe solution. In 1665 London suffered a great plague. History will tellyou that this was caused by rats. The truth is that one of Dicks’ earlyancestors had already gone into catering. I leave the rest to yourimagination. When the good Burghers of London located the source ofthe problem it was found to be in Pudding Lane. The aforesaid relativerefused to stop his creative cuisine so, in 1666 drastic action wastaken. They banished him and burned down his premises. Unfortu-nately they were a little too enthusiastic and ended up burning downthe whole town!

The only place the family could find sanctuary was Middle Earth. Apartfrom the fact that they were all the right size Gandalf wanted to gethis hands on the recipes involved. Rumour has it that he felt he hadnever seen a better way to poison Orcs.

So there you have it, an accurate portrayal of history and confirmationas to how his family became Hobbits. Now back to the main point ofthis little piece. If you see Dick watching you in a section just yell“Gollum!” This combined with his waning powers should mean hecannot affect you. There is, of course, one disadvantage the onlyperson now responsible for how you ride is you!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Ian Mac.
