Known as the Mural Town of NZ .

Katikati is a town located on the Uretara Stream near the tidal inlet opened by MatakanaIsland in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Katikati was settled in 1875 by settlers fromCounty Tyrone in Ireland through the Orange Institution. The settlement was established

by the Irishman George Vesey Stewart, who led two groups of settlers there aboard theships Carisbrook Castle and Lady Jocelyn. The land upon which the town was built wasconfiscated from local Māori after the land wars, and was given to the settlers by theCentral Government. Katikati is known for its many murals painted on walls ofcommercial buildings, started in the 1990s as a project to regenerate tourist interest in thetown and district, indeed the effort was recognised with the bestowal of New Zealand's'Most Beautiful Small Town' award for towns of less than 8,000 population in 2005 by theKeep New Zealand Beautiful Society. There are hot springs three kilometres to the south ofKatikati at Sapphire Springs. This next few months we shall attempt to encourage you to explore the locality in whichyou reside. For other attractions in Katikati area, visit Katch Katikati's website www.katikati.org.nz

Katikati is a small town with a big heart.Back in the 2006 census it had a populationof around 3600 people. The 2013 censusshows 4054. The face of Katikati haschanged a great deal in. However, some

things change and others stay the same.An interesting annual event is - their A &P show is held on 2 February this yearand costs only $5 for adults, $2 for schoolchildren and under 5s are free.Visit the website at http://katikati.org.nz/Events+Calendar/Febr uary+2014/2nd+Katikati+AP+Show.html
