Kirkland’s contractor will replace two essential systems that are under-capacity, aging and resulting in excessive maintenanceWHAT: A City of Kirkland contractor begins the 10-month process in late February to upgrade an aging water and sewer main along 108th Avenue Northeast.

Marshbank Construction is replacing the two systems—both more than five decades old—to increase their capacities to serve Kirkland’s growing population and to reduce the systems’ needs for maintenance.

That need is most urgent in the sewer line, which runs from Northeast 68th Street to Northeast 53rd Street. Settling soil has created a sag in the sewer line, allowing sewage to accumulate there and requiring maintenance crews to periodically flush the line.

The contractor is also replacing the water main between Northeast 68th and 60th streets.WHEN: Marshbank’s crews will work 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting in late February or early March.

n Marshbank will work several nights in 108th Avenue Northeast’s intersection with Northeast 68th Street to connect the water and sewer mains and to pave.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Marshbank will pave the entire width of 108th Avenue Northeast this fall between Northeast 68th and 60th streets.

Between Northeast 60th and 53rd streets, the contractor will pave the center turn lane and southbound lane. Weather could force the contractor to delay its paving schedule until spring 2021.

n King County Metro will re-route some buses around construction zones.

n Marshbank will detour traffic around any closed sections of road and will shift travel lanes to accommodate construction zones.

n The contractor will maintain access for local residents, mail, emergency responders and waste management.

The contractor will establish a detour around closed sections of road. Will be lane closures. lane shifts.

Construction begins 2020 on bike, ped bridgeKirkland’s leaders expect construction to begin in 2020 on the

Totem Lake Connector (pictured at right). During the first six months of the bridge’s two-year

construction process, Kirkland’s prospective contractor will be acquiring the materials—mainly steel—to build the bridge and piece sections of it together. That will take place off-site.

When complete in 2022, the Totem Lake Connector pedestrian and bicycle bridge will connect the two ends of the Cross Kirkland Corridor currently severed by Totem Lake Boulevard and Northeast 124th Street.

The bridge will feature an overlook that will extend over the park from the bridge’s loop. The 20-long-foot overlook will taper in width as it extends toward a transparent end-panel.
