On December 21st, we had our Awards Ceremony, followed by the Troop Christmas Party. The girls, dressed in their Class A uniforms, were awarded several badges that they have been working on throughout the year, but the impressive part of the ceremony was the number of service hours recognized by the troop as a whole – nearly 200! After a group photo, we moved from the Sanctuary into the Fellowship Hall to enjoy the goodies. While the families mingled, the girls paired up for a get-to-know-each-other-better game. Some girls also participated in a gift exchange. It was a very enjoyable evening.

American Heritage Girls sponsors a Pen Pal Program for the girls. The girl can register in October/November and the national office matches her up with another girl of about the same age from another state. The girl is expected to communicate with her Pen Pal at least once a month and can write a letter or even send an email, though that is less common.

January 12-14 is our first of two camp-outs this year. We will be visiting Tree Tops Park again and will enjoy a two-night stay. Hope it warms up! Some of the girls will be working on the Camping Badge - creating our menu and shopping for us. We will also have a Flag Retirement Ceremony, as we did last year. This was the highlight of that particular camp-out – what a meaningful event. Saturday, the girls will participate in a Scavenger Hunt, staying in pairs to find various items located throughout the park, and taking a hike.

Our first camping trip of the year was on January 12 – 14 at Tree Tops Park on the island. Over forty girls and family members participated and most of them stayed for both nights of primitive camping. Friday even-ing, we all set up tents then the girls played and explored the area. We even had a nice fire. Saturday, the girls cooked breakfast – sausage and eggs – and then most of the group went on a lengthy hike all around the park. We explored the boardwalk, searching for wildlife, saw a Burrowing Owl, and got to visit with some horses and their riders. After an easy lunch, there was some down-time when the girls played on the play-ground or around the island. Some even went out in the paddleboats or tried to improve their fishing skills from the bridge! The Tenderhearts put together a Fashion Show, showing us appropriate and inappropriate camping attire. Saturday night’s fire began with S’mores and visiting. We also had a Flag Retirement Cere-mony, which included all of the girls and most of the siblings and adults. We respectfully retired a large bag full of flags that were no longer in flying condition. Sunday morning was pretty chilly – a quick breakfast, a little devotion, and everyone started packing up and saying their good-byes. Our next camp-out is in March and we are all looking forward to it!!

Each fourth Friday of the month, we have a get-together – the FFF (Fourth Friday Fun) in January was hosted by the Tender-hearts. We met at the church at 6:30 with our games and snacks, and spent the next couple of hours playing games and enjoy-ing getting to know each other better…and eating.

Please spread the word about your troop. If anyone is interested in more informa on, they can contact Jim or Debbie MacGregor at 785‐207‐3796 or send an email to [email protected] or email Darla Schulte at [email protected].

We have had a busy December at the school.

Kindergarten students became inventors. Their task was to create a device that would

keep an egg from breaking when dropped from the second floor of the two story building. The

school children from the other levels came to watch as they tested their inventions. Many

different containers and methods were used to keep the eggs safe. They were all successful!!

Our students were also busy preparing to lead worship at the Advent services. Our 3 and 4 year old students shared songs of Christmas at the 2nd week of Advent service. The K—7 grade students shared the message from the hymn “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” during

the 3rd week of Advent service.

“I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:8-9).

Without commands or even arm-twisting, St. Paul encourages, even challenges, the Church in Corinth to demonstrate the sincerity of their faith by their generosity in giving. He does this because giving generously is a gift of the Spirit given to us through the Gospel.

St. Paul wrote: “But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7). In other words, just as we grow in faith and speech and knowledge of eternal things by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God, so also do we grow in giving from the same Spirit through the same Word.

The problem is that the grace of generosity often grows cold in us. It’s not so much that we stop giving, but we don’t put it first. We treat it like all the other bills that must be paid. It becomes a chore, just one more thing to check off a list of things to do. That empties it of its spiritual power and robs us of the joy that Christ and the Scriptures assign to it.

On top of that, since this generosity is linked to faith and knowledge of divine things, a lack of excelling in giving is a sure sign that our faith and knowledge of God are under attack as well.

Thus St. Paul points to the foundation of generosity: the generosity of Christ Himself. Even though He was rich, He became poor so that we who are poor might become rich. Thus, the incarnation, suffering, and death of our Lord on the cross is the reason, source, and driving force for our generosity in giving to the church.

And since Christ who was rich became poor so that we might be rich in His grace—of which generous giving is part—so we also who are rich in His grace can excel in pressing His grace into service toward the gracious work of the church.

Pay attention to what you give to the church so that you may excel at it. And if you find that your heart has grown cold or indifferent toward it, immerse yourself in God’s Word. Read it at home. Attend Bible Class. Hear and listen to it preached in the Divine Service.

Be reminded of what Christ has done for you in His incarnation, suffering, and death. For this will strengthen your faith and knowledge. And where that excels, so will the grace of giving excel also.

Pray For Us CalendarCHILDREN AND FAMILIES — FEBRUARY 1–29

“Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God,” Jesus says in Luke 18:16. God wants all His children to have faith in Him, yet sin and brokenness permeate the lives of His people. Children are orphaned, and families are ripped apart. Over the years, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) has reached out to care for God’s precious children through the mercy ministries of congregations, missionaries and Recognized Service Organizations (RSOs).

We finished hos ng Group 28 of GriefShare on Saturday, Dec. 9 with a Finger Food me and a Candle ligh ng Ceremony remembering the loved ones who have gone to join Jesus in Heaven. We started the cycle on Saturday, August 26 with an Orienta on session and we also viewed the DVD “Surviving the Holidays” on Nov. 4. And yes, we have seen the tears back into September turn into Christmas Joy in at our Candle ligh ng Ceremony.

GriefShare is a non‐denomina onal, Scripture‐based, Christ‐centered, grief recovery support group which is sponsored only by churches worldwide and which entails a DVD presenta on, general discussion/sharing of the contents of the DVD, and some self‐study me in Scripture. Professionals in the grief recovery environment and peers are featured in the DVDs. A workbook, Tool Box (along with 14‐16 tools), a Gra tude Journal and a Resource Book are used in the program, as well as a Surviving the Holidays Devo onal. The par cipants also have access to our Lending Library which consists of books on the grief journey. We culminate our cycle with a Candle ligh ng Ceremony and Finger Food me. Yes, what is a gathering without food!!

We thank our members of the GriefShare Prayer Support Team for their prayers for this ministry and covering the weekly private prayers given them by our par cipants. Without their prayerful support we doubt that we would be able to minister to those who are grieving.

We are also seeking help in expanding the peer Team so that some of our facilitators can take an occasional break. If you are interested in assis ng us in this endeavor or you can recommend a member who might be interested in becoming a facilitator or be on the Prayer Support Team, please call or talk with one of us.

Please know that a person can join at any session since each segment is “self‐contained” and she or he can catch up through the audio CDs or by a ending a later cycle. One can also check to see some of the churches sponsoring GriefShare in our area by going to www.griefshare.org clicking on ”Find a Group” and put in your zip code. Or call one of us if you need someone just “to listen” or if we could be of help to you. As we are told in II Cor. 1:3‐4, we are here to comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we have received ourselves.

We will begin Group 29 on February 17 at 1:00 pm. We will con nue on Saturdays as this me frame has worked well for senior adults who do not wish to drive at night. The registra on fee which covers the materials remains at $25.00.

If you have any ques ons re GriefShare, our Team would be most happy to talk with you….just call or see one of us: Judy Herman, Millicent Pa erson, Linda Malone, Marilyn Mills or Marian Fowler. We pray for God’s blessings for each of you this coming New Year.
