The lack of setting realistic goals is probably the main reason why most New Year’s Resolutions fail.

The principle behind this tip is called the Law of Incremental Acheivements.

For example, if your goal is to loose 40 pounds this year, you could break that goal into 12 monthly sub-goals to loose x number of pounds per month.

When you break big goals into to smaller ones, you can eliminate the over-whelm that sabotages many noble New Year’s Resolutions.

In order to gurantee your success you can do what Tim Ferris says in his book Social Triggers: How to Master Anything in 6 Months, in which he suggest that you start off with the easiest task first. The rea-soning behind this trick is to lesson the failure points at the beginning of the pro-cess. If you were to have a the positive experience of success in the beginning,

For example, if your goal is to loose weight, a system of accountability could be in the form of a weight loss buddy who would check in with you on a daily basis to see how you are sticking with your diet plan.

Another form of account-ability could be in the form of a journal.

You could make daily entries in your journal about the challenges you

Break your goal into smaller parts to make it earier to achieve

you are more likely to mas-ter your goal.

mr. ferris also recommends that you put the most chal-lenging part of your goal at the end of the process so that your failure points are at the end.

faced that day in sticking to your diet plan or your dif-ficulty with sticking with your exercise plan.

Your reward system could be an incremental system of rewards whereby you reward yourself along the way for sticking to your plan of action.

The biggest reward of course is accomplishing your goal!

ayor Harvey Johnson has made economic development a prior-tiy during his admin-

istration. During this interview you will discover amazing developments that are stimulat-ing growth for our city.

EMOJ: . I was watching a press conference where it was report-ed that 500 million dollars for developments had been allotted for Jackson, Mississippi. Can you tell us how these develop-ments can bolster the economy for the City of Jackson and how they can create jobs for the citi-zens of Jackson?

Mayor Johnson: Since 2009, the City of Jackson has issued over $600 million in building permits for major developments across the City of Jackson. These projects require manpower, materials to include bricks and mortar, concrete, mechanical equip-

ment, electrical, and plumbing to name a few. Local supply houses benefit from the demand generated by these projects. Construction sites will employ skilled and non-skilled labor during construction activity times. Locally owned contracting firms will typically be engaged in the construction activity.

We’ve also developed a Jobs for Jacksonians Initiative where citi-zens can call a hotline at 601-961-4JOB to sign up for the Jobs for Jacksonians registry. We share the registry, which includes individuals’ skills with various contractors who work on the major development projects or who do business with the City of Jackson or ask the City for incentives.

One success story is the $57 mil-lion Baptist Development on North State Street. The developer worked with the City of Jackson to employ forty Jacksonians from the Jobs for Jacksonians Program. We intend to duplicate this success.

EMOJ: It was reported that the city received $90 million dollars in building permits (licenses), is that accurate and how did that hap-pen? And what are some of the

usEFulgraphics

projects you have on tap to bring prosperity to our city? Mayor Johnson: The City issued a total of $150 million in building permits for developments valued at over $100,000 in 2012. Some of the projects which were new develop-ments or expansions were:•Baptist Health Systems Expansion, North State Street ($57 million)•Calvary Baptist Church Redevelopment Project, Capital Street ($30 million)•Cade Chapel Senior Apartments, 1035 W. Mayes Street ($12 million)•Iron Horse Grill, Downtown ($7.5 million)•JATRAN Administrative Facility, Highway 80 and Valley Street ($6.8 million)•Virginia College, Ridgewood Road ($5.1 million)•Whole Foods Market, Highland Village ($3 million)•Walgreens, 1583 E. County Line Rd ($2.7 million)•Wendy’s, Northside Drive ($2.1 million)•Richard G. Porter Building, ($1.2 million)•Save A Lot Grocery Store, Woodrow Wilson ($1 million)•Trustmark Bank, Woodrow Wilson, ($968,000)

Also, several infill developments including Dollar General Stores, several renovations at local car dealerships, commercial and resi-dential build-outs located through-out the City contributed as well.

The City of Jackson also issued over 1,000 business licenses to new businesses in all parts of the city of Jackson.

My administration is committed to working with developers and our small businesses to continue to bolster our economy, to put people to work and to attract top notch developments and businesses to the Capital City.

We also continue to be recognized for our strong economy by national media outlets. Some of the recog-nition we’ve garnered includes:

•One of the American Cities Beating the Recession – The Huffington Post •One of the 20 Strongest Performing Metros in America – Brookings Institute’s Metro Monitor Report •11th Best City in America to Launch a Small Business – CNNMoney.com.

EMOJ: Tell us about the City of Jackson’s business grant pro-grams that help entrepreneurs with creating a business or to benefit existing businesses.

Mayor Johnson: In the past year, the City of Jackson awarded over $200,000 in grant funds to small business owners through two matching grant programs created by Mayor Johnson.

The Small Business Development Grant Program (est. 2004) assists small business owners with the purchase of operational or

technological equipment such as computers, cash registers, security systems, Point of Sale machines, etc.

The Storefront Improvement Grant Program (est. 1999) assists small business owners with façade upgrades such as light-ing, signage, etc. The maximum amount of each award is $15,000. Both are funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant Program.

The grant programs were estab-lished as a way to stimulate investment and fuel job creation in the City of Jackson.

Since 2009, the City has awarded $840,858 to local small business owners which helped them to create or retain a total of 618 full time jobs and 276 part time positions.

EMOJ: Speaking of jobs, I learned about the “Fresh Start” initiative that helps former inmates who have felons on their record. Can you tell me

Page 13: January Edition of Exppose Magazine of Jackson

13Expose’ Magazine of Jackson

how that program works?

Mayor Johnson: The City of Jackson’s Fresh Start Program began on January, 1, 2011. Based on the successful Second Chance Program initiated by the City of Memphis, Fresh Start seeks to successfully reintegrate those formerly incarcerated into the community by assisting them in finding a job. Fresh Start staff refers participants to social ser-vice agencies for needs that go beyond employment.

“the panel also provides feedbackto the applicant about the inteview...”

Broadly, Fresh Start’s goals are to effectively and compassionately support the successful reintegra-tion of formerly incarcerated persons into the community and to reduce crime by reducing recidivism.

The Fresh Start process includes an Intake Interview during which the applicant completes an appli-cation form and documents and discusses their job experience and skills, education, employ-ment barriers and strengths, the history of their offense, as well as the status of their driver’s license or State Identification.

If the person is seen as quali-fied for the Fresh Start Program and desires to continue, a Panel Interview is scheduled in which the applicant is interviewed by two other City of Jackson manag-ers. The Panel reviews the appli-cant’s offense, as well as their job and educational history. If the Panel is convinced that the appli-cant has changed their life style and is committed to the hard work of finding and maintaining

work of finding and maintaining a job, they will accept them into the Fresh Start Program. The Panel also provides feedback to the applicant about the interview and coaches them on ways to improve their presentation of themselves.

A background check conducted by JPD is also a part of the pro-cess and is used to be sure that the information shared by the applicant in the Intake and Panel Interviews matches the informa-tion provided by JPD.

The Fresh Start Program cur-rently has 130 active participants and has directly assisted in plac-ing at least 33 participants.

In addition to the existing Fresh Start Program, the Department of Human and Cultural Services applied for and received a Justice Department Planning Grant for $50,000.

we will continue our jobs for jacksonians initiative. . . .”

The grant required the develop-ment of a Task Force collabora-tion of organizations with an interest in and commitment to reduce recidivism. A Task Force of 73 persons was cre-ated and met over the period of six months to assess current reentry systems and to develop an evidence-based plan leading to successful reentry of persons released from prison. The Fresh Start Reentry Program Strategic Plan is now complete and is being printed.

The Department of Justice will release a Request for Proposals (RFP) in Spring, 2013. The Department of Human and Cultural Services will respond to that RFP with the Fresh Start Strategic Plan, requesting funds required to implement the Plan.

EMOJ: What is your vision for the capital city for the New Year?

Mayor Johnson: This year we will continue to build upon the success that we’ve had here in the City of Jackson. We will be working to continue bolster-ing economic development and will see the completion of the first phase of the Baptist Development, Whole Foods, the Iron Horse Grill as well as the beginning of others. We will also be taking further steps to bring major revitalization to the Highway 80 corridor and help in the resurgence of the Metrocenter Mall.

We will continue to make major infrastructure improvements such as the continuation of the Fortification Street Project, the expected issuance of $10 million in bonds for much needed street resurfacing, and major water and sewer system upgrades.

We will continue to focus on our efforts to curb crime, grow our police force and to tackle violent crime here in our city. We will be undertaking initiatives to reduce the incidences of violent crimes in our city.

We will also continue the Jobs for Jacksonians Initiative and expand our Summer Youth Employment Program.

And we will be focusing on pro-grams to enhance our neighbor-hoods across the city.

ecently I sat down with the Executive Director of “Dress For Success”, an orga-nization that helps women to become job ready and provides them with attire

to land a job on the job interview.

EMOJ: What motivated you to start a chapter of Dress For Success for the Jackson area?

Ms. Chambliss: In 1995 I was diagnosed with cancer. Of course when you hear those words your life changes. You reflect, analyze and re-evaluate your life. In those moments of clarity, I knew I had to take out my “talents”, dust them off and do something to help others in whatever time I had left. While sitting at home recovering from anoth-er surgery, I read an article about Dress for Success and how it provided suiting and services to women transitioning into the workforce. I knew I had tons of clothes, had friends with tons of clothes and decided I would put the two together and start a Dress for Success in Jackson, MS.

Pat Chambliss, exe. Director

Debra mcGee, Presidentdo-

Upon receiving approval to open up an affiliate in Jackson, I along with my sister, Earnestine Alexander, friends, Deborah Giles, Gwen Winters, Vickie Mason and Mary Dixon opened up our first location on the 2nd floor of Pearl Street AME Church. Our first suiting was a group of ladies with Marvin Hogan’s group “Friends of Children” in Belzoni, MS and it has been my life’s work ever since. I can honestly say, Dress for Success Metro Jackson saved my life. EMOJ: What challenges did you face in the beginning?

Ms. Chambliss: Because each one of us had jobs during the day, we had to struggle to get to the location to suit clients. In the beginning it was done after hours and on weekends. We also found that an inter-view suit was the beginning; but not enough, the women needed more to get them to the next level of becoming employ-able. So we opened a Career Center which allowed us to assist the women with their resume, cover letters, computer skills and that all important interview and first impression. We were also able to hire a Program Coordinator to handle the day to day operation of the organization. We were also able to tap into some awesome vol-unteers from our community as well as local colleges and uni-versities in our area. Jackson State University provided work

study students to assist with the clients and other services. EMOJ: Who are your board members and how did you go about selecting your board members?

Ms. Chambliss: our board has evolved over the years. They are a diverse group of men and women that are totally commit-ted and believe in the mission of

Dress for Success Metro Jackson and volunteer their time to raise funds, bring public awareness to the women and organization and put on awesome events. How do we select board members? It is usually done via word of mouth. If a board member introduces a friend or co-worker to what Dress for Success Metro Jackson is doing and they like and want to help us help women and their families, then we welcome them to apply. We look for women

and men that believe in helping others and have a passion for it. We have a “give or get” policy, which allows board members to ask corporate sponsors and com-munity friends to donate to the organization, put on events that will bring awareness and monies or donate from their own.

EMOJ: Do you have an annual gala?...tell me about that?

Ms. Chambliss:We have two signature events each year. Our PowerWalk that takes place the Saturday before Mother’s Day each year. This year the date will be Saturday, May 11 at Northpark Mall. This event allows us to honor and empower women that are getting their lives back on track. We also have a portion of the event called “Heels for Success”, which allows our walkers and runners to don heels and run for the cause. It is a really fun event and this will be our 3rd year putting on this event. We are looking for corporate sponsors to make this event a success!

Our Little Black Dress with a Tie event is our signature fall fundraising event. We dress up in our black dresses and show support for community leaders, organizations and philanthropist that improve the lives of others through their great works. This event is usually held the first Thursday in October. Jessie Primer donates his time and pro-vides the music. We have great sponsors and an awesome silent and live auction to auction the items. This event gets bigger and better each year.

EMOJ: Tell us about some of the clients you serve and how their lives have been changed.

Ms. Chambliss: Our clients come through over 30 referring agencies in the Metro Jackson area as well as the Mississippi Delta. There are organiza-tions that work to improve the lives of women and need assis-tance with getting services to the women in their organiza-tion. We also attend job fairs to offer our services to women looking for employment or advancement. Our clients get so attached to the organization that they continue to come back for additional services and men-toring. We chose our Program assistant, Gloria Brown because she came through our Going Places Network by Wal-Mart and was such a joy. She was willing to learn and take in the infor-mation that was provided. Her love for learning turned into an opportunity to work for Dress for Success Metro Jackson. We know Gloria will have additional opportunities to move up and on

in her life and we plan to look for another “diamond in the rough” to take her place, because there are so many Gloria’s out there that just need a “hand up”; not a “hand out”.

EMOJ: Tell me about your staff:

Ms. Chambliss: Our staff con-sist of Daphne Higgins, Program Coordinator, Vera Johnson, Going Places Network by Wal-Mart Coordinator, Gloria Brown, Program Assistant, Angela Tornes, Professional Women’s Group Coordinator. They are doing a great job and work really hard to assist the clients and provide the necessary ser-vices they need. Because I still work for Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company, these

women run the day to day oper-ation of the organization. They are our eyes and ears in the com-munity!

During the show Iyanla talks with Evelyn about her brief marrieage to OchoCinco, also known as Chad Williams, who alledgely injured Lozada during an altercation about Chad’s infidelity. Iyanla forced Evenlyn to admit that Lozada ignored the signs of Chad’s unfaithful-ness prior to the marriage. But Evelyn was willing to sweep those signs under the rug because she wanted to be loved. Iyanla candidly told Lazaro that until it becomes unacceptable for her to be dishon-ored by a man, she will continue to invite those those situations into her life.

a lot of controvery swirls around this movie which depicts the slavery era.

The movie has a twist to it in that Django, played by Jamie Fox, metes out revinge to certain whites in the movie.

Spike Lee is protesting the movie. One of the reasons is because of the use of the N word used throughout the movie. Lee says that the movie is an insult to black people.

In defense of the movie, Quentin Tarantino, the producer of the movie, says that the movie simply depicts the truth of the culture of how black people were treated at that time.
