Happy New Year! I hope to get back on the road and see many of you in 2017. We had been hosting lots of contributor lunches and dinners, and then it all ground to a halt in 2016, when we got ridiculously busy. I wrote my Simply Happy book in 2016, in addition to everything else I was doing, and I just couldn’t find the time to get out there and meet people. But I have high hopes for 2017 and hope to resume visiting all of you. Sometimes these contributor events lead to amazing relationships, such as the one that we now have with an extraordinary teacher in Denver. We first met Cathy Kopp at a contributor luncheon we hosted in Denver in August of 2015, and that first meeting has led to a wonderful relationship. Cathy Kopp has stories featured in two of our books: Chicken Soup for the Soul: Touched by an Angel and Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Dog’s Life. But what really defines Cathy for us is her career as a teacher —43 years and counting, currently at Holly Hills Elementary School in the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver. When we talked about our proactive literacy-based bullying prevention program, Chicken Soup for the Soul Hallway Heroes, at the lunch, Cathy’s interest was piqued. She volunteered her fifth grade class for a pilot. Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties. ~Helen Keller I NNER C IRCLE the AN EXCLUSIVE MONTHLY COMMUNIQUÉ FOR OUR WRITERS INSPIRATION for riters W A Note from Your Publisher J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 7

GOD’S WORD TODAY

Today, we are once again given an account of the call of the disciples. These Gospel stories are positioned in the early part of Ordinary Time for good reason. We know that the Lenten journey is just around the corner. That journey will take us once again to Jerusalem and to the cross and resurrection of Christ. One of the characteristics of discipleship is that one does not become a disciple solely on one’s own. There is always a call, an invitation to follow the way of discipleship. When today’s Gospel is proclaimed, try to put yourself in the place of those early disciples who were casting their nets. They were simply doing their daily tasks. In the middle of those tasks, the Lord calls them. Perhaps that is precisely where the Lord calls each of us—in the midst of our daily tasks. As we prepare to listen to God’s word, let us open our hearts to listen to the invitation issued to each of us to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.

Mark 1:15

Why Corner

Discipleship's Responsibilities

Jesus, what are my responsibilities? First, Jesus called and they followed. We all have received and heard the call or invitation from Jesus. He called us wherever we are and whatever we are doing. He called the first four disci-ples while they were working, fishing or whatever they were doing. Surprisingly, He calls us even when we are on a mission of committing sins, like Paul and Matthew. Divine invitation is always there for us and all we have to do is to acknowledge and follow. Have you heard the call? Second, they left everything and followed Jesus; their families, loved ones, parents, business and their comfort of lives. They let nothing or anyone get in their way of being faithful in following Jesus. They traded everything and everyone for only one Je-sus. Are you all for Jesus? Third, Peter and Andrew were called while "casting their nets." John and Andrew were called while "mending their nets."! They were all given a special function, task, gift and tal-ent when they were called. "Casting their nets," Peter built up the Western Church, and Andrew built up the Eastern Church. "Mending their nets," John and James were great ad-ministrators and catechists in the early stage of the church. What is your gift and talent? Fr. Young

Helping Hands Needs Your Help!

Help us come up with ideas!

Attend a brainstorming meeting on February 9th, 5:30 pm. ALL are invited! As you know, each year the Helping Hands society raises funds to help the needy in Baldwin County. One of our major fundraising events is the annual Dinner/Auction held in the fall. However, this year we are looking at other ways to raise money in place of the dinner/auction. We need your help in coming up with ideas and would like your opinions, so please join us for a brief meeting on Monday, February 9th at 5:30 pm in Aquinas Hall. If you are unable to attend and would like to share your thoughts, please contact Bonnie (456-7749) or Sally (414-7705). We also would be appreciative of any volunteers to help with whatever fundraising activity is decided upon. So if you can help in any way…large or small…we would love to have you get involved. Thank you for your continuing support of Helping Hands.

The Valentine’s will be taken to Ft Steward on February 12th. All items to be brought in no later than February 10th. The items can be delivered to the church office or left in Flannery O’Connor Hall marked “Hearts for Heroes
