Woodland Tennis Club January 2021 Volume 14, Number 1

From the President Hello Woodland Tennis Club members!

Even though we have not had our usual socials, tournaments, league play, potlucks and holiday parties, WTC is still alive and well.

Let me fill you in on the latest news and information.

4. We have made some renovations to the City Park nets. They each have new “headbands” and look fabulous. Thanks to David Dobson for researching and ordering the headbands and putting them on for us.

5. We have some new equipment thanks to a grant we received from USTA. We now own a hand sanitizing station, a new ball mower, boxes of balls, and more supplies for Sunny and Mark’s lessons.

Now to other business and odds and ends:

We are financially sound. Thanks to Monty Newborn for his diligent work as treasurer to keep us solvent, and to y’all for paying those dues. Use the web site to pay up for the coming 2021 season.

We are alive and well on social media. Look for us on FaceBook, Instagram, and be sure to look at our web site (www.woodlandtennisclub.com) which will be having an overhaul soon. Thank you to Marcail, Dave Dobson, and Kitty Schlosser for your work there.

Want something to do while you wait out the pandemic? Come use the WTC ball machine. All you need is perhaps some tutorial work with James Ousey, along with the shed key. We have some brand new pressurized balls thanks to Margo for that donation. Be sure to use your Nugget and Food For Less Script cards. We generate 1% of your total for WTC needs. The Tennis Complex Sub Committee continues to meet regarding the planning and construction of the new tennis complex near the Senior Center. Thanks to Cameron Kane for his work on this project. Thursday Night Tennis will continue through the winter thanks to Steve Lambert. Show up if you want to play. 6:45pm at City Park, weather permitting. Thank you, James for running this program this year! All in all, I speak on behalf of everyone who is still able to play and enjoy our courts that have remained open during this season of uncertainty. Being able to play has been a blessing and a huge mental health plus! If you want a hitting partner or want to know who else might like to play, we will be sending out a membership list soon. Take a look, give them a call, remember to distance yourselves and use hand sanitizer. See you on the courts!

February is when we elect new WTC board members. Three positions are up for election this year. The positions are currently filled by Monty Newborn, Floyd McCain, and James Ousey. All three of these board members have indicated that they wish to continue serving on the board, however, if you wish to be considered for a position please contact Marjie McWilliams, Chair of the Nominating Committee at [email protected] or call her at 916-541-6946. Please contact her before Feb 1, 2021.

Our Tennis Facility at City Park As you approach the courts from the South coming down Cleveland Street you are able to see the tapes on all of the 4 nets shining white as you can just barely see them under the hedges. They are clean and new because one of our members, Dave Dobson, decided to research how to repair worn and torn tennis net tapes without replacing all of the net. He came up with a repair that cost $40.00 apiece. He bought a specially manufactured new plastic covering that is made to be woven over the old one. After the installation of the first one he got three more and with some help from other members the job was completed. They look good. Thank you, Dave, for your time, your ideas, and for paying for the repair.

Our tennis ball machine known as the “Silent Partner” is entering it’s second year of service. We now use pressure-less tennis balls on the machine that are much more consistent in where they bounce on the court after being fired than the old variety of balls we were using before. Anyone needing a lesson on using the machine please let me know and I will show you how to make it work and access it. Sadly, the old lobster machine dating back a long time has been retired to the metal recycling yard. Maybe it will get melted down and reformed into a Lamborghini.

Sometimes working with a government entity can be an interesting experience. Last year we approached the City of Woodland through their Community Services Department (CSD) and asked for a larger cemented area outside the gate on court number 2 due to the muddy conditions just past the asphalt. We were informed that it looked fine and no changes would be made. OK, no big deal, just asking. Last month workmen showed up and made a new sidewalk connecting the gate with the wide sidewalk running through the park. Go figure? Thank you Woodland CSD.

If anyone would like to volunteer to help with court upkeep when help is needed there are times when an extra person is very welcome. You know where to reach me. Currently while the leaves fall, I am using a leaf blower on Sundays. Let’s hope it starts raining and continues to rain a lot and we all get a long break until it stops raining.

Recycling Used Tennis Balls Please use the green boxes in the shed to recycle your used worn out tennis balls. Most of the board members have keys to the shed or you may ask Sunny or Mark to take them for you.

I am the new Tennis Director for CITA (Cello International Tennis Academy) Woodland. I learned to play tennis at the City Park in Woodland, as I grew up in Woodland and graduated from Woodland High. At WHS, I

played football, basketball and tennis, I later played tennis for American River College. My first full time tennis teaching position was at Green Valley Country Club as Phil Cello’s assistant. My first Tennis Director job was for Vacaville Racquet Club where I worked for 13 years. I was the Tennis Director for Millennium Sports Club and have worked as an Independent teaching pro for many years. During this time, I also spent over 7 years working with Lukas Burger at the Stonegate Tennis Academy. I have been a certified teaching pro by the United States Professional Tennis Association for over 30 years. I enjoy working with juniors and adult players. We offer group and individual lessons for all levels of junior players. I am also working on revamping the group lessons for adults. There should be a new schedule out in January. If there are any classes, you would like to see please email me at [email protected] and I will do my best to accommodate you. The current schedule and information can be found on the Woodland City website or www.citawoodlandtennis.com. We are planning to run our normal junior classes during the school break .

Mark and Nia at the mixed Junior Team Tennis Nationals last year. Nia won the sportsmanship

award for their division.

TNT, as it has come to be called, is our only social event still going strong since the Covid-19 be-gan. Our first attempt at starting it up again was in early June with just 4 players. Within 5 weeks we had 23 players one night and seven had to go look for courts elsewhere. Now things are much settled down with 8 players on average. The music and awarding of trophies and other things have given the event a different feel than other drop-in groups. It is high energy, joking and fun.

One of our new members wanted to take over as chief Poo Bah of TNT through the winter. You have been getting his e-mail invitations. His name is Steve Lambert. He has lots of positive energy and just loves tennis alt-hough he is a very new tennis player. Steve is an athlete and, in my opinion, he is a 3.5 player already. If you give him a shot to the forehand that is over two feet above the net, he likes to swat it like a bug and has no fear of missing. The shot is accu-rate, hard, and flat. It’s quite scary. It seldom gets returned.

On Halloween we all shared Subway sandwiches compliments of the Tennis Club. We kept and ate 6 feet apart. Rachel Crets won the $50.00 first costume prize as a mouse, but her picture came out fuzzy, sorry.

If you feel OK with being with others during these times the current TNT is well…different. We still award trophies some evenings and always have music.

Youth Scholarship Committee Our board of Directors decided to make a Youth Scholarship Committee to address paying for fees of any youth in Woodland who wants to play tennis. $2000.00 has been allocated as startup funds to launch the program. We are working closely with Marshall Echols of the CSD and a procedure is now in place to allow parents or students to sign up for tennis classes and have our club pay the fees if needed. As this goes to press only one student has applied and has been awarded a paid scholarship. The rules guiding this new committee have been approved and can be found in the November BOD minutes. One rule is that we should have three members on the committee, but presently we have only two. Perhaps you would like to volunteer? Present members are me, (James Ousey), and Monty Newborn our treasurer. Experience in writing grant applications is a plus but not necessary if you would like to join the committee. We opened up this new program with a large Fence Banner that can be seen on Court 1. Sunny and Mark have their pictures on it. Another interesting item is a sentence on the banner suggested by Marshall Echols that the City Park Tennis Courts are “Primarily used for tennis lessons and for events held by the Woodland Tennis Club.” That is quite a statement from his office. Currently we are seeking children between the ages of 6 and 10 to enter a new class that is taking signups. The lessons start in January and go for one month every Saturday between the hours of 11AM and Noon. Normally the fee for this lesson would be $48.00, but our club will pay for any that apply. Call me at 530-379-6237 evenings or write: [email protected]. Alternatively, parents may call the City CSD at 661-2000, sign up and tell the person on the phone that the Tennis Club will pay. Instructions will then be given. I am asking our members for help in filling this class with 11 new students. Contributed by James Ousey

Amazon Smile Program For those of you who use Amazon Prime for online shopping, the Amazon Smile Foundation will donate 0.5% of every order placed to the Woodland Tennis Club.

When f i r s t v i s i t ing AmazonSmi l e (smile.amazon.com), you are prompted to select a charitable organization from almost one million eligible organizations. We hope you will select the Woodland Tennis Club. There are no strings for you, the shopper, or for WTC. This is just an easy way to make your purchases benefit the club. Remember, your Amazon Prime purchases must go through AmazonSmile in order to get credit for WTC.

Nugget Scrip Program

Since 2014, the Nugget Scrip Program has given the WTC a “no strings attached” total of more than $200 in cash. Members who shop at Nugget and Food 4 Less show their scrip cards at checkout and the club is credited with up to four percent of the purchase total. Each time you purchase groceries you are helping the club grow financially. How easy is that? Cards can be obtained from WTC board members Elaine and Floyd McCain, Kitty Schlosser and Karen Shepard or from the Nugget corpora te o f f i ce located next to the Woodland Nugget Market.

The Power of Soliciting Donations

Our 501©3 status means that we are recognized by the IRS as a legal entity. We have certain rights as well as responsibilities that come along with this unique status. One of the rights we have is the right to solicit grants of money or material or to solicit free donations of any legal items to sell. We must of course use the money that we receive to further our mission of promoting the game of tennis in Woodland. For the past few years, we have been casually soliciting the donation of cars to the Woodland Tennis Club. This was done by me as I handed my calling cards now and then to players I had met on the tennis court. On the back of the card is a 1-800 number and a short write-up about how we accept cars as a donation and that we quickly pick up the cars, auction them, and turn the money into tennis lessons for youth in Woodland. The telephone number goes to another 501©3 non-profit called CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services) which is located in San Diego. We have a contract with them and if we solicit a car, and the owner calls them, then CARS does all the work and we get 70% of the value of the car. We are kept informed of the donated cars’ progress through the chain of donation call, pickup, sale, and payment. Perhaps you have noticed the small banner by the gate on Court 1 advertising the Car Donation Program. In late October my Sacramento tennis friend, Peter Warhanowicz, decided to donate his 1998 broken down Ford F-150 truck to the Woodland Tennis Club so he called the number on the card. His truck was picked up on Nov 5. and sold on Nov. 15 for $400.00. The towing cost and a 10% auction fee was deducted from the $400 and the net to the club was $191.00. Should we receive a more valuable car in the future our share will be a higher percentage of the auction value.

According to CARS, the Sacramento Zoo earned over $100,000.00 last year soliciting cars. The telephone number to donate a car to the Woodland Tennis Club is: 1-855-500-7433.
