December was a very involved month for the BEST car club in Hawaii. Beginning the day after Thanksgiving with the Liliha-Palama Parade, as well as the Kalihi Holiday Parade, the

Club had a full dance card with parades each weekend right through the Ewa Beach Lions Club Christmas Parade on the 21st of December. The requests for Corvettes to carry dignitaries, beauty queens and Santa were substantial, and we found ourselves in high demand, needing more than 20 cars for some venues. Thanks to all the members who participated and kept our club in the forefront of Oahu’s automobile culture.

Looking ahead for January, we have the highly anticipated End of the Year Banquet at the Waikele Country Club on 4 January. Chinese New Year Festival is the 17th.. I spoke with the organizer of the Festival to see if the traditional parade was included and was informed that the parade is not a sure thing as of yet, but if it does go, it will be on the 18th and he would very much like to have us participate. The Martin Luther King Parade is in Waikiki on the 20th. When I spoke to the organizer, she broke down in tears and said we were the answer to her prayers, because she needed cars. To my knowledge, the CCOH has not previously participated in the MLK Parade, so it would be great to have a good showing.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the patience shown me during my initial term as your Vice President. I’m blown away that I was re-elected, and I promise to do a much better job of it this year. One thing Charles and I discussed, was putting out a list one year in advance of our Monthly Dinner locations, so everyone knows and can plan accordingly. Watch for that real soon. (Of course, we could always deviate if something comes up).

Kaoru and I hope every one of you had the Merriest of Christmas’s, and the happiest holidays, and we trust that 2020 will be a good year for us all. Thanks to all of you for your friendship. Semper Vette, Jay (INDY78)

Aloha my Corvette Friends and Family, Joni and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and an outstanding start to the New Year.

I would like to thank the Board members for their hard work and support to the club this last year. WOW, how time flies when you are having so much fun! I also thank you, the club members, for your support and participation in our various events. The club sponsored 52 events in 2018, and 65 events in 2019. Can you believe it? While we understand you could not be at every event, we had a very successful year.

Last year JN Chevrolet, our official sponsor, gave us a Club wall at the dealership where it displays our posters, banners, awards, newsletters and membership applications. We supported several local charities, had dinners together all over the island, and several breakfast events with a nice drive around the island afterwards. We had a very strong support and a great showing for the First Hawaiian Auto show, supported our local military for Veterans Day, enjoyed a Thanksgiving Day sunrise drive and breakfast, remembered our Pearl Harbor survivors, participated in more parades than I can remember and still enjoyed several Garage Day events at Corvette Drive.

This year we are going to build on our success and fine tune some areas. Our club bylaws still needs updating and I need your suggestions for proposed changes. Our website and newsletters are being upgraded to keep you better informed of upcoming events and we won 1st place in the National Corvette Museum Newsletter and Social Media contest.

Lastly, I will need your help! Please review what’s going on and call someone that you haven’t seen in a while at our events. Encourage them to into their Corvette and come out. You and I know they are missing out on some great fun.

Until I see you again, Aloha and please be safe out on the roads.

V/r Charles (CYBER)

Corvette's new C8.R already feels "solid and competitive" ahead of this week's Roar Before the 24 test at Daytona, according to team newcomer Jordan Taylor. The American marque is preparing to give its all-new GT Le Mans class contender its public debut in the three-day test that begins on Friday, ahead of its race debut in the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship curtain-raiser, the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Taylor, who replaces Jan Magnussen in a new-look lineup aboard the #3 C8.R, stressed that achieving reliability would be the first challenge for the team, but he feels the base level of the mid-engine racer is already strong. "The C8.R is obviously still very new, so reliability is always the first question," said Taylor, who will compete alongside Antonio Garcia and another newcomer, Nicky Catsburg, at Daytona. "The Corvette Racing guys have done an unbelievable job designing and developing it. Pace will

come eventually, but it already feels like a very solid and competitive car.” As many laps as we can get at the Roar and going through the program, getting all the drivers on the same page from a set-up point of view and then the little things like pit stops and driver changes will be different than what we’ve had in the past.

Page 7: January 2020 | Volume 48, Issue 01 KA LEO O CORVETTEcorvetteclubhawaii.com › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 01 › 2020-01.pdfJoni and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and an

"The car is a little more tricky to get in and out. Understanding that muscle memory of the process of getting in and out, where the seatbelts go, where the drinks bottle is, where the air hose goes… those little details that we haven’t refined that were refined with the C7.R are things that will show up in a 24-hour event, so those are things we will need to check off the list at the Roar."

On the other side of the Corvette garage, Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner will continue as a duo for a ninth consecutive season, joined again by three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Marcel Fassler for the endurance races. Gavin stressed that using the three days of Roar testing effectively will be key to the team's hopes of a strong start to the new program. “The team is going to have a very structured plan," said the English-man. "And that’s one of the things that’s so good about Corvette Racing. We plan our time and funda-mentally understand what all we have to work through and the list of things we need to achieve. "The third drivers will need time in the car. We’ll all have to work through that program and procedure as best we can. Certainly we’ll learn a huge amount every time we go on track just with how certain tires work, how the braking package works, the aero set-up, weight placement… all kinds of different thoughts that the team will look to work through. "We know that of that list of 50 things we want to try and achieve, the chances are that if we can come away with 60 or 70 percent of that done, it’s a pretty big win.”

Our last Monthly Dinner of the 2019 year was hosted at Mur-phy’s Bar and Grill on Merchant Street. Murphy’s web site describes itself as “a traditional downtown saloon and eatery located in the Honolulu Financial Dis-trict, just one block off the waterfront where Murphy’s has been a haven for mariners, businessmen and locals since 1891”. Honolulu was bedecked in Christmas lights, and the interior of Murphy’s was resplendent with tradi-tional Christmas trees and garlands. It was the perfect venue for a Holiday gathering for the 17 mem-bers who ventured to Chinatown for an Irish meal and some good clean fun between friends. Brittany, our lone server, was attentive and seemed imbibed with the Holiday Spirit. She kept glasses filled and brought our meals rather quickly, only slowing down when having to formulate separate checks which seemed to take a tad longer than it should have. Murphy’s fare consists of salads, burgers, sandwiches, steaks, corn beef with cabbage, seafood, and traditional shepherds pie. I had the Garlic Steak which as the menu touts, was featured on the televi-sion show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! The steak was grilled to perfection and covered with a green peppercorn sauce which complimented it perfectly. But based on the silence after the food arrived I think everyone had a terrific meal. January’s Monthly Dinner is January 21, 2020 and is tentatively scheduled to be at the Dixie Grill in Aiea. Hope to see everyone there!

Aloha,

Thank you for asking the Corvette Club of Hawaii (CCOH) to participate in your upcoming parade and/or event. The CCOH has enjoyed supporting our local communities and organizations for over 45 years. Our members have donat-ed many hours of their time in support of organizations like the American Cancer Society, MADD, Toys for Tots, high school Homecoming Parades, King & Queen events, escorts for Hawaii pageant winners, and parades in vari-ous communities throughout the island of Oahu. The CCOH is a non-profit organization and our operating budg-et to cover our End of the Year Banquet is supplemented by donations we receive from supporting community parades. Unlike some of the other car clubs, we do not charge a fee but graciously wel-come a donation to help the Club. On average, donations range from $25.00 to $50.00 per vehicle depending on the event and the driver’s attention to details for your dignitaries and/or passengers. If you choose to assist with our Club Banquet, please make the check payable to: Corvette Club of Hawaii.

CCOH reserves the rights to all the pictures that we take of the Corvettes with your dignitaries and/or passengers. This supports our monthly Club newsletter that will feature your event. Please check out our latest newsletter at www.CorvetteClubOfHawaii.com . You are welcome to publish any pho-tos of our Corvettes that you wish but we do ask that you credit the Club and the driver in the pic-ture description.

There are a few requests that we would like to inform you of to make things easier for not only your dignitaries and/or passengers but for our drivers too:

1. Signs should be no larger than 18” high by 24” wide. The signs are affixed to the doors with 1” to 1 ¼” suction cups, usually four to a sign but 6 may be needed for heavier or larger signs (12 per car). Please provide the suction cups because the driver may not have extras available after decorating his/her Corvette. They can be purchased at craft stores or at most hardware stores. The drivers should be given the signs and the suction cups so they can install the signs on their own vehicle. If you want the signs and suction cups back at the end of the parade, please have someone ready to remove them when we let the passengers out at the end of the parade. Signs should be flexible and not hard as it could damage the vehicle.

2. Dignitaries and/or passengers should be advised that they are to remove their shoes upon enter-ing the vehicle. In most cases the passengers will need to step on the console or leather seats while entering and exiting the vehicle. Shoes, bags and support items can be placed in the passenger floorboard area.

Page 10: January 2020 | Volume 48, Issue 01 KA LEO O CORVETTEcorvetteclubhawaii.com › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 01 › 2020-01.pdfJoni and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and an

Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette http://CorvetteClubOfHawaii.com/ Vol. 48 Issue 1 p. 10

3. Dignitaries and/or passengers should be advised that we do not provide shuttle service back to the beginning of the parade after the parade is over unless it is pre-coordinated with the Club Presi-dent. This is because normally the event organizers, City and HPD block off the area. They will need to obtain their own transportation back to the starting point of the parade or their designated area.

4. If the dignitaries and/or passengers are assigned to the vehicle, we expect that he/she will ride in the vehicle and not walk in front of it. Not only does this slow down the parade but it is a waste of a vehicle asset that could be assigned to others. The drivers are not there to ride alone in a parade. Also, dignitaries and/or passengers are not permitted to exit the vehicle until we reach the designat-ed drop off location.

5. For safety reasons, please advise all dignitaries and/or passengers that they cannot throw any items (i.e. candy, flyers, cards, etc) from the vehicles. Children and adults do not look for moving ve-hicles when they are out there chasing candy/items.

6. The Corvette owner will decorate his/her Corvette for the event. You are welcome to bring items and ask them if it can be used on the car but it will be at their discretion. We do this because only soft items can be placed on the paint to avoid possible scratches and/or damage. Corvettes are fi-berglass and carbon fiber so magnet signs do not stick to them. Please only use suction cups to sup-port or hold items to the cars. NO TAPE.

7. For planning purposes, do not assign more than two people per vehicle. Please notify the digni-taries and/or passengers of this requirement. However, if two people are sitting on the back of the car, a handler or 3rd person may ride in the passenger seat. Also, if you have three light or smaller passengers (ie queens, teenagers etc) that need to be sitting on the back of the car then ask for ap-proval. This will be at the discretion of the driver.

Thank you again for asking us to support your event. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact the current club President.

The Corvette Club of Santa Barbara was established in 1986 by a group of Corvette enthusiasts from the local area who desired to create a forum for sharing automotive technical information and their affinity for Corvettes, and to establish club events for both singles and couples.

The Club now has 76 members and 60 Corvettes and they enjoy year-round activities on the Central Coast of California. MUSEUM’S PERFORMANCE GALLERY UNDERGOING MAJOR REMODEL December 12, 2019

The National Corvette Museum has embarked on a major exhibit remodel bringing one of the Museum’s earliest display spaces up to date with a design that truly reflects the sleek and stylish nature of America’s favorite sports car.

“The Performance Gallery is one space in the Museum that has been around since the building’s grand opening over 25 years ago,” said Derek E. Moore, Director of Collections / Curator for the Museum. “In the early days an elevated ‘racetrack’ was in place to give display cars a feeling of motion and being on the grid, but due to difficulties changing out the vehicles, was later removed. The space has housed an interactive pit crew challenge, educational driving simulator and various artifacts through the years, but now needs more than a refresh. It’s time for an overhaul!” In 2018 the Museum met with an exhibit company to get ideas and renderings on what the new space could look like. “We wanted not only a clean look, but also a space that would lend itself to showcasing historic racing videos and stories about each car on display. The concept is to have projection with each car, as well as digital labels that allow visitors to learn more through an interactive experi-ence,” said Moore. “Rather than remove or paint over the existing racing mural, we will install a secondary wall that keeps it protected and intact behind the scenes.” Funding for the exhibit was garnered through a private donation.

“It’s America’s Sports Car. In terms of car and performance for the money, in large measure, the Corvette street car can hold its own against the top sports car manufacturers around the world. It’s always something the common man can get into. My love of Corvettes carried over from my fa-ther. As soon as I could get one, I got one. We have a place that is celebrating the brand, celebrat-ing the marquee, and the huge history of it. Having known there was a time that there was a pro-spect that the program was going to shut down – it’s almost unfathomable that we are now to the C8. We are to Zora’s dream of having a mid-engine and I’m ecstatic. I hope it will do what GM has been hoping for a long time and that is to bring in younger customers. I think’s it’s really cool we are doing this renovation to the Museum to have something more interactive, to have something the younger people will appreciate and be able to learn how unique Corvette is, and frankly sports car history.”

The new exhibit is planned to open in late March, 2020 – with an official ribbon cutting slated to take place during the Michelin NCM Bash April 23-25.

2020 First Hawaiian Motor Con New cars, trucks and SUVs will fill the Hawaii Convention Center for the 2020 First Hawaiian Motor Con! Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29, 2020. https://autoshowhawaii.com/show-info/

Hours

Friday 12 noon – 10 pm Saturday 10 am – 10 pm Sunday 10 am – 7 pm

CCOH Members please look at the small spot they gave us this year. It’s 1/4 the size space compared to last year’s show. That means that we will only have room for about 8 to 10 Corvettes in this show. We are thinking of sending our best C-1 to C7 and asking for a new C8 to round out representing the Club. If you are interested in showcasing your Corvette this year, please let Charles know.

On a Trans-Atlantic flight, a plane passes through a severe storm. The turbulence is awful, and things go from bad to worse when one wing is struck by lightning. One woman in particular loses it. Screaming, she stands up in the front of the plane. "I'm too young to die!" she wails. Then she yells, "Well, if I'm going to die, I want my last minutes on earth to be memorable! No one has ever made me really feel like a woman! Well I've had it! Is there ANYONE on this plane who can make me feel like a REAL WOMAN??" For a moment there is silence as everyone had forgotten their own peril, and they all stare, riveted, at the desperate woman in the front of the plane. Then, a man stands up in the rear of the plane. "I can make you feel like a woman," he says. This tall, tanned and well-built guy with jet black eyes starts to walk slowly up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt one button at a time. No one moves. As this man approaches, the woman begins to get excited. He removes his shirt. She starts to sweat. Muscles ripple across his chest. As he reaches her, he extends the arm holding his shirt to the trembling woman and whispers: "Iron this please!!!" LOL. Henry (Hank) Ah Hee [email protected]
