The star of Bethlehem ushered in a new beginning for humanity. The people of the East

came giving praise to God, bringing gifts, and celebrating the child Jesus. We’re told the

story of these men looking at the signs indicating that great things are taking place. They followed the

star and found the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Emmanuel.

Many others came to visit with Mary and Joseph as they learned through angels and shepherds. As the

narrative says, “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them

about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary

treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:17-19

Now we are far removed from that time of Jesus but not so far removed that we don’t see the

importance of this Holy night or the presence of others in the life of the Holy family. I use the story of

the star (the new beginning) and the story of people gathered around the Holy family (ministry of

presence) to relate our need for your presence.

The ministry of presence is something I talked about in a sermon several months ago. It is a ministry

termed “Member Care”. Will you help bring the Good News to those not in the sanctuary? Are you

able to present the gift of care to someone sick, homebound, or recovering from surgery? We need to

follow the example of gathering around the Holy family as a way of expressing care for our members.

Your presence around the family of God will make a difference in the life of a member not able to

attend worship.

A new beginning: On January 17th we will begin placing bulletins in the gathering space with names

and address on them for our membership to deliver on their way home from church. You can make the

difference in the life of Jesus by giving the gift of 15 minutes to stop and talk and give the bulletin to a

person unable to reach their church family. You have the opportunity to visit God’s family and I have

to say, “It is an honor to serve Jesus in this way”. If you don’t think these things matter, ask one of our

members who’ve been in the hospital, care facility, or are at home. Receiving the bulletin each week

can bring them joy and it lets them stay connected to St. Paul through your ministry of presence. There

are many members living in a variety of areas around the church. I believe you will not have to do this

all by yourself but perhaps it can become your gift of ministry for God’s church.

This is step one of a member care program for St. Paul. Step two will be to keep the freezer in the

kitchen full of casseroles and dinners that can be taken to members coming out of the hospital for child

birth, surgery, or who have been sick and living alone. Delivering them to our members with the joy

and love shown around the manger as the shepherds told their story and the wise men came to pay

homage.

Merry Christmas,

Pastor Frank

Pastor’s Corner January 2016

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from

the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the

Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." 10

When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering

the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him

homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold,

frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:1-3; 8-11

Members and Visitors of St. Paul

Your Finance Committee asks that everyone thoroughly read the yellow handout that

has been presented with the bulletin the past couple of Sundays. The subject handout is

also included in this News Letter.

The information is important to understanding the use of the new envelopes as well as

iPad/On-Line giving.

We cannot emphasize enough that the General Fund covers the operation of the Church

as budgeted. Extra finance drives are to be over and above that which has been

estimated and planned for the General Fund. In the past, extra requested gifts have been

contributed in lieu of General Fund gifts.

As the year comes to a close, indications are that we have all done a great job of

reaching our financial goals for 2015. We need to maintain this trend going into 2016,

which will be equally demanding.

Remember, all that we have, our lives, our families, our incomes, our resources, our

homes, our health and our intellect belong to God in the first place.

Your Finance Chair,

Dick Kaminska

MUSIC NEWS

A 14-week course on how to play the recorder will be offered through Leisure

Learning and taught at St. Paul. The St. Paul consort will “team-teach” the

course. An orientation session will be held on January 11 at 1pm. This will allow

students to select which recorder to choose and give time for the instruments to

be ordered.

If you want to learn how to read music, learning to play the recorder is the easiest

way. The course will be designed for someone without musical training but

people who have had training but want to learn the recorder will be welcome and

will fit in.

The course will be held on Mondays from 1-2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Please see the Leisure Learning Catalog for more information. The course will

run from January 25- April 25. There will be no classes on January 18 or April 4.

For further information or questions, please call Charles Tucker at 850-525-8256.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We trust everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a safe, healthy New Year.

WOW! What a year. We have had a great year in 2015 and are looking forward to 2016.

We want to thank everyone in our congregation for the support you have shown us this

last year. There have been many changes in our “coffee hour” and you all have been

troopers to volunteer and assist us in every event we have hosted. My prayer is we will

continue to improve, enjoy and “fellowship”. After all that is what GOD wants us to do.

We thank those who served in December on Sunday and Wednesday Night services: Eric

and Shelly Johnson , Eric and Mara Given, Barb Lenn and Gerry Selland, Betty and

Harland Bross, Lisa and Don Boose, Sherry Schaffer and Carleen Bragan, Judie

Cox. Thanks to all the gentlemen who help us with the tables and chairs at each event.

You are the best. If you have not had the opportunity to serve, please give it some

thought, it is very rewarding to see our fellow members and guest to enjoy good

food and laughter.

A SPECIAL thanks to all who brought gifts and or made a monetary donation to our

“IT”S A KITCHEN THING”! We received many nice gifts and we are excited to get our

kitchen organized and start using our new items. We trust you enjoyed the cookies as

much as we did making them. Thanks for all our committee members for baking and

packing cookies, we had a good time, if you miss it hope you can join us next time.

Get ready, we are already planning some events you will not want to miss. Watch for

news in the bulletin and Fellowship Hall. Our first event will be our annual

Strove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th. In addition, we will be hosting a

“Valentine Dinner” on Saturday, February 13th. Watch for details.

As always it is a JOY and HONOR to serve in GOD’S HOUSE!

Thank you to all who have served as

Hospitality hosts during December.

There are plenty of opportunities to

host during January. Sign- up sheets

are posted in the Fellowship hall.

Social Ministry

For a number of years our church has participated in helping the Adult Guardianship

Clients of LSF (Lutheran Services of Florida) with their Christmas gifts. These clients

either have no family, no family that cares about them, or have family who are unable to

help them. They live in nursing homes or assisted living homes. The clients often have

forms of dementia, intelligence disorders, autistic, etc. The social workers compile a list

of their needs and wants, and once again St Paul members answered the call. The clients

this year ranged from age 27-86, and their needs and wants were varied. The Thrivent

Action Team grant provided additional funds to complete the shopping requests. Many

many thanks to the following shoppers Lori Overy, Wanda Gore, Monica Moore,

Eleanor Aspliden, Etta McDonald, Shelley Johnson, Alice Fludgate, Lisa Boose, Carol

Parnell, Marjorie Kellams, Sidney Glasmire, Jeanne Clark. In addition to these shoppers,

Alice Fludgate, Gerry Selland, Sarah Leviege joined me on the shopping trip at WalMart

to complete the shopping. Everyone is called on at this time of year to help and

contribute to so many things, and we all become overextended and over

committed. However, to help people who have no one and cannot help themselves, is so

rewarding and brings out the true spirit of Christmas.

LSF Dinner Update: (Lutheran Services of Florida)

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in planning, preparing, cooking and

cleaning up for the LSF Dinner on December 18. Everyone worked very hard, and it was

a wonderful event. It was great fun to see the good people from Lutheran Services

Florida, who do so much for our community, take some time off to enjoy each other’s

company and relax. Extra food from the LSF event was taken to New Hope Home in

Gulf Breeze. I wish everyone could have been present to witness the joy on the men’s

faces when they saw their dinner arrive. New Hope Home depends entirely on donations

to feed the homeless men in their program, and I heard one of the men say - “now we

don’t have to worry what we’ll eat tonight!” Yes, the Lord does provide.

Blessings,

Cynthia Carter

Why are the exterior church doors red?

Well, historically the red doors of a church were a symbol of sanctuary – a place where

a soldier could not pursue an enemy. The red signified the blood of Jesus Christ who

came to save all who took refuge in him. People who passed through the red doors

were safe. Today the doors continue to provide safety and refuge to all who enter.

Some believe that the doors of the Wittenberg Cathedral, where Martin Luther posted

his 95 theses, were red. Red doors on Protestant churches indicate their roots in the

Reformation.

I thought it would be nice for those who didn’t know about the meaning of red on the

sanctuary doors to have the information. The doors were professionally painted last

month through a designated gift. This gift was given by the family to the Memorial

Fund in honor and memory of Charles Daniel Gee. We give thanks for the gift to paint

the doors and the gift of love your family shared with the people of St. Paul.
