WE NEED USHERS AND FLOWER VOLUNTEERS For the year of 2016 we are in need of volunteers for ushering and providing flowers for the sanctuary. The new sign-up sheets are on the hallway bulletin board near the kitchen. Please see Loretta Chapman for any questions you may have about serving in either of these ways. Thank you for your help! WITH DEEP APPRECIATION In January we are so blessed to welcome Alice Allen-Grimes, Joe Morgan, Bill Reed, and Denise Tinkham to serve on Session for the next three years. We also are fortunate that Bill Armstrong—who ordinarily would be rotating off Session—has agreed to serve an additional year in filling out a term. We have been so very blessed to have been led these last three years by not just Bill, but also by Peggy Haile McPhillips, Erin Todd, and Peggy Troyer, all of whose terms on Session have come to an end. These individuals have worked very hard, they have been part of deep deliberations, and they have shared their faith humbly. We are a stronger church family because of them. Please do express your thanks to these individuals for their service. UN-GREENING OF THE CHURCH Please join us at the church Saturday, January 9 at 9 a.m. for a time of doughnuts, coffee, and un-decking the halls. Your help is greatly appreciated in returning the church to its post-Christmas splendor! Secd Life A Monthly Newsletter January 2016

WE NEED USHERS AND FLOWER VOLUNTEERS

For the year of 2016 we are in need of volunteers for ushering and providing flowers for the sanctuary. The new sign-up sheets are on the hallway bulletin board near the kitchen. Please see Loretta Chapman for any questions you may have about serving in either of these ways. Thank you for your help!

WITH DEEP APPRECIATION

In January we are so blessed to welcome Alice Allen-Grimes, Joe Morgan, Bill Reed, and Denise Tinkham to serve on Session for the next three years.

UN-GREENING OF THE CHURCH

Please join us at the church Saturday, January 9 at 9 a.m. for a time of doughnuts, coffee, and un-decking the halls. Your help is greatly appreciated in returning the church to its post-Christmas splendor!

From the Pastor

FROM THE PASTOR: RELATIONSHIPS MATTER

Friendships are fragile. All relationships are. That is the case not just between friends and co-workers, but also between parents and children, siblings, and spouses.

Even with the best of intentions and with deep caring and love for each other, we frequently miscommunicate. We send signals that we never intend. We hurt others.

Those who have healthy relationships work on those relationships. So many people have pointed me to one particular book influential in their growth: Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages. First published in1992, it has been a best seller for the past 23 years.

The book’s premise is simple: People experience love in different ways. If you do not know your friend’s, employee’s, child’s, customer’s, or spouse’s “language,” he or she likely won’t interpret your efforts as caring or loving. The good news is that you can learn their “language” and the book shows how.

Earlier this year in Slate, there was a skeptically titled review of Chapman’s book. The title was “My Love Language is Silent Condescension: Could I learn anything about my marriage from a cheesy, best-selling, vaguely evangelical self-help franchise?” The author ends up answering in the affirmative. She writes that the book convincingly explained “persistent frictions between my husband and me. And it described with weird precision my own emotional hungers and satisfactions.”

I have a deep hope that we—as individuals and as a congregation—think increasingly about how we can be more intentional in our relationships. To that end, please give

yourself a great Christmas present (a copy of Chapman’s book, available everywhere!) and be part of a short-term, 6-week study, from 9:45-10:30 a.m. each Sunday, starting January 3, entitled “Challenging Relationships and the Five Love Languages.” In these six weeks we will develop tools to better understand ourselves and others, and learn skills to communicate more effectively.

Just six weeks. It will be worth your time. It is important.

This series will be led by Dr. Larry Toney and his wife, Peggy. Larry is a Presbyterian pastor and chaplain (Colonel), US Army Reserve, who currently is studying counseling. This class is for couples, singles, people planning to marry, people not planning to marry, single parents, gentiles, aliens, and so forth. Please join me and invite friends from outside Second as well. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall.

With appreciation, prayers, and love, Pastor Craig

SERMON SERIES: STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS: FINDING JOY IN A BROKEN WORLD

The apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippians is one of the most beautiful writings in the New Testament. From his imprisonment, Paul writes to a church community for whom he is sincerely appreciative. He respects them, he is grateful for their friendship, and he recognizes tensions. Because they have such a strong relationship, we read the sort of advice that one friend offers another in the faith. Join us in reading a wonderful letter and reflecting on advice that should strengthen each of us and our relationships.

January 3 “Let Your Love Overflow!” (Philippians 1:1-11) January 10 “Live Your Life Worthily!” (Philippians 1:12-30) January 17 “Do Nothing From Selfish Ambition” (Philippians 2:1-13) January 24 “Hold Fast” (Philippians 3:14-21) January 31 “Rejoice in the Lord Always” (Philippians 4:1-9) February 7 “Share Distress” (Philippians 4:10-20)

KINDERGARTENERS THROUGH 5TH GRADERS HOLY MOLY (Each Sunday at 9:45 a.m.) In “Holy Moly,” each week children from kindergarten to 5th grade will have an interactive Bible story, an active learning experience, and a clear life application to today. And a pretty fun Bible video as well!

MIDDLE/SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUP RE:FORM(Each Sunday at 9:45 a.m.) Sam will lead the middle and senior high youth as they create and lead their own study, a study focusing on the hard questions of faith . . . and the questions most important to them!

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT CLASS CHALLENGING RELATIONSHIPS AND THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES (Each Sunday, January 3 – February 6, at 9:45 a.m.!) Join Dr. Larry Toney, his wife Peggy, Pastor Craig, and others, as develop tools to better understand ourselves and others, and learn skills to communicate more effectively. If you don’t own, Gary Chapman’s book, “The 5 Love Languages”, it would be a great investment and would be helpful in this class.

ISAAC THOMAS’ WONDERFUL PEACE

If you have not yet bought a copy of Isaac’s latest CD, Wonderful Peace, please do so. It is available at the church for only $10, with all profits being donated to Second Presbyterian. One review on iTunes says, “The title of the album describes--and the picture on the cover shows--exactly what the album delivers.  Isaac has such a distinctive style.  The music is so peace-filled and calming and, at the same time, filled with latent energy and anticipation:  ‘Two Trees’ combines these differences beautifully.  Renditions of familiar tunes—like ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ and ‘Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus’—transform them, giving them new life, a more meditative quality, and—again—a deep latent energy.  Similarly, ’Till We Meet Again’—the closing track—has a familiar tune at places, but is so extremely engaging in new ways. I did not want it to end. The entire album is beautiful.”

CATHERINE HART MONROE: SAYING GOODBYE TO AN INTERN

When Catherine first started worshipping at Second Presbyterian a few years ago, we had no sense that her involvement here would lead to a summer internship—actually with a program in downtown Norfolk—that Pastor Craig would supervise. We had no sense that that in turn would lead to an internship with our congregation from last January through July. When July began to approach, and when we saw advantages—for everyone—to a year-

long internship, we were pleased when that became a reality. As Catherine’s internship is drawing to an end, we are very pleased to say goodbye to her as an intern, only because we are welcoming her as a member of the staff. She has successfully completed her ordination exams, and in Richmond she soon will be working on her very last seminary course. While she is completing that, she will continue to be a part of our community, particularly active in programming and congregational care. We are so extremely grateful for all of the ways in which Catherine strengthens us, and we are pleased to welcome her in her new role.
