As the winter months bring a chill to these southern lands of sunny Atenveldt,
we gather together as households, peers, family, and friends to warm our
homes and hearts with revelry. We had the opportunity to gather with our cous-
ins of Mons Tonitrus to indulge in the yuletide with feasting and song. We cele-
brated the spirit of chivalry and show at our Pas d'Armes. Thankfully, the
events of the day prevailed despite the threat of weather. Unfortunately, the
weather exacted its payment for mercy on that day by bringing rain down upon
our next two practices!
Regardless, we will not be daunted in our efforts to train and prepare for the
approaching season of war. The populace of Tir Ysgithr is truly mighty in all
fields of battle. We are mighty in sword and spear, rapier and dagger, bow and
ax. We are mighty in ink and fiber, metal and leather, song and dance. We are
the glinting beauty of the Gem and the fierce prowess of the Boar. We will
shine as a jewel in the Crown of Atenveldt and defend these lands with the un-
yielding skill and spirit of Tir Ysgithr!
Good gentles all, we call upon you at this time to muster and rally to the banner
of Tir Ysgithr. We call upon every person, house, and unit to
take the field so all may know that the Boar leads the way!

December 3rd turned out to be a great day in Tir Ysgithr. It truly
was a day of fun!! The Pas de' Armes tournament was more than suc-
cessful.
Thank you to everyone who came out, to all the lady judges, and
the fighters for their entertainment. And a special thank you to the many
people who donated prizes, and helped make the event run smooth.
I again can see why this barony is so fantastic, and never want to leave.
And of course, I can't wait to have this event again next year!
Thanks!

The first time….
I was on the field at Estrella, I wasn’t
really on the field. I was more like on
the edge of the field.
There I was at Estrella 7 (Or was it
“8”), the year of the Great Micro-
burst, though it wasn’t called that
yet. It was My First SCA event….
I had been convinced by a BBS Bud-
dy to “go camping” with him and a
bunch of his friends. (BBS=Bulletin
Board Systems were how people
talked via computer before the Inter-
net. Very slow and much beeping
and static over phone lines. Heaven
help you if someone picked up the
phone when you were “online”. Hey,
it’s where the phrase CAME from.)
I was totally clueless, a trait, I’m hap-
py to say, that I still have today. I also
encourage this trait in others. (For
readers of the late, great Douglas
Adams, think of it as having your own
set of working “Peril Sensitive Sun-
glasses TM.”)
I probably should have suspected
something when the week before he
had us all gather at his house in the
early morning. I was asked questions
on what type of camping gear I had.
I’d been a Boy Scout seven years
prior and my Dad never threw stuff
out. I was set there. Next they asked
me if I had any sweats without marks
on them and boots.
I was out of the army about a year,
so the answer was also “yes”. Cov-
ered. Good.
Then it started to get weird.
We all loaded into vehicles and went
to a place called SAS-Fabrics by the
Pound. A place of interesting odors if
ever there was one. I was hit in the
nose by the door when it opened. At
least that’s what I thought. Turns out
it was just the smell coming out of
the place.
Two young ladies, who to this day I
can’t remember their names,
grabbed me and headed for what I
was soon to discover was the cotton/
polyester blend section. (To this day,
I have NO IDEA how they keep inven-
tory in this place. Thankfully the bad
smells of yesteryear have been re-
moved by well-placed air fresheners
and the removal of chain smoking
being allowed in the store. Huzzah!)
The ladies grabbed cloth and flung it
around in a whirling dervish. Occa-
sionally they would stop the Ninja/
Kung-Fu Battle Carnage to drape
some over my shoulder and look at
me. It was then that I noticed their
language and behavior.
Terms like “hardsuit”, “o-crat”, “ex-
checkers”, “Ay-oh-Ay” and
“mundane” being used as a noun?
Someone was admonished for a
slightly racy idea she had by some-
one saying, “Not in front of the hats!”
One young girl was pouting because
she couldn’t find “enough matching
fur for a bikini.”
A tall skinny fella was ALL excited
about some “Broke Kayed Lace” he
had found.
And a crowd had gathered around a
HUGE barrel of buttons. They were
ooo-ing and ahh-ing as they dug,
frantically. Each cursing the other for
causing avalanche after avalanche of
little bits of plastic . I thought for a
second that they were panning for
gold, and pulling up NUGGETS by
their reactions.
Don’t get me wrong, they were de-
cent enough folk. Yeah, they may
have talked funny, but no less so
than Star Trek and Star Wars fans
arguing the benefits of Dilythium
Crystals verses Hydrospanners. They
were Geeks. (You are one TOO if you
understood that.) My people. Odd-
balls in high school, mostly, who
through late bloomage and/or social
taboos of the local tribe, developed
their minds in unique and different
manners.
I was from Texas: The Great and
Mighty LONE STAR, a Sovereign Na-
tion unto itself before “reluctantly
deciding” to become a state in the
United States Union, and don’t you
Dad-Blasted forget it!!! WHEEE-
HAW!!!!!
Who the hell was *I* to judge.
I didn’t know HOW different these
folks were until we returned to his
house, MANY hours later. While mas-
sive amounts of pizza was being or-
dered, one of my young lady friends
placed the fabric we bought on the
floor. She then, playfully, pushed me
down on top of it.
I tried to get up, but she jumped on
top of me. Trying, or was that
“succeeding”, to hold me down, gig-
gling all the while.
I actually was starting to have fun
when…
I saw the other young lady stalking
toward us, a huge grin on her face,
and a bar of soap in her hand.
Clueless be damned, it was time for
a good old fashioned PANIC!
(To be continued….)

The amount of interest in bardic of
late has been a wonderful thing to see,
and as BotS and Dean of the College of
Bards, I am delighted to see so many new-
comers getting involved in the performing
arts. To that end I thought I would drop
some thoughts and advice on the bardic
arts to any of you who are still on the
fence about trying it out. So pardon me
while I wax loquacious on the art I love so
well.
First and foremost, I would like to say
that while the SCA, and Atenveldt in partic-
ular, tends to associate “bardic” with mu-
sic or singing, this is just a single aspect
of the traditional Bardic arts. The Irish
Bard, in historical context at least, was
required to do far more than just sing
songs and play music. not only where they
expected to know a hundred songs and
play many instruments, they were also
expected to know a hundred stories, a
hundred poems and all the histories of
the great Irish heroes, Kings and Clans. So
poetry and storytelling were an integral
part of being a Bard. Now... why am I tell-
ing you this? because you don’t need to
sing or play to be a Bard! poetry and story-
telling are both important aspects of the
Bardic arts, and I for one would love to
see more “spoken word” performances at
bardic circles and competitions. So don’t
think you have to have a good singing
voice or play ten musical instruments to
participate. I have no doubt that there is
already a poem or a story or even a “No
S**t there I was story” near and dear to
your heart that you could start your Bardic
career with.
That being said, I will now move on to
the advice section. First and foremost,
until you pluck up the courage to stand up
and perform, all of this is moot, and you
may as well stop reading now. But stage
fright is something everyone deals with,
and the rush and joy of performing is well
worth the anxiety of anticipation that we
all have... Yes, even The Mighty Patrick
the Butcher still gets sweaty palms and
butterflies before each and every perfor-
mance. true story kids... I get as nervous
as a schoolgirl on prom-night every time I
do it. but believe me when I say that it is
all worth it, that our Bardic community
here in Atenveldt is amazingly welcoming
and supportive, and that you will never
learn to fly if you don’t take that first leap
into the air. Go ahead and fall... we will
catch you. The single most important thing
you can do for yourself as a new Bard is to
just get the heck up and do it.
To that end, I give four bits of advice
on performing for the first time.
1: pick something you already know
and love, something that speaks to your
heart. this will just make the whole pro-
cess easier and the emotion that you have
for the piece will always show through in
your performance, no matter how scared
you are.
2: practice it! in front of a mirror, to
your kids, to your friends, to random
strangers at the bus stop... practice prac-
tice practice. the more familiar you are
with the cadence, content and script of
your piece the smoother and more pol-
ished your performance will be.
3: keep it simple, keep it short. In my
many years of performing as a Bard, I can
tell you this with all certainty... your audi-
ence will listen politely for about three
minutes, and then their attention will
begin to wander. If you are on your game,
and the piece is a good one, you might
stretch that out to maybe five, six minutes
max... but that depends on the audience,
how late it is, how cold it is, how much the
crowd has been drinking, and so on and
so forth. So keep it short and sweet to
begin with. as you progress in skill and
experience you can start performing long-
er pieces, but even the best of us will
loose the audience If we bite off more
than they can chew, so to speak.
4: Start attending bardic circles and
competitions. Even if you are not ready to
perform yet, come see what others are
doing, how they do it, what the crowd likes
and what they don’t. you can learn alot
from just sitting and paying attention not
only to the performers but to the crowd,
the judges and the way each performance
is received in general.
So, all this being said, I want to
invite you to come play with me! Tell me a
story, recite me a poem, sing me a song...
bring some magic back to the game we all
love so well. For that is our sacred duty
and calling as Bards in these modern mid-
dle ages. It is We who light the lantern of
imagination in the hearts of the populace,
and turn a VFW hall, high school auditori-
um or cold wet night around a lone fire-pit
into a stage upon which all the glory,
beauty and glamour of this amazing game
we play might truly be celebrated. Come
and test your courage in a new arena, and
fight there for a prize beyond measure,
and without match.
And so I challenge you all. A challenge
to become more than you thought you
might be, and in so doing bring even
greater joy and glory to your Barony, our
beloved Kingdom, yea even the whole of
the Known World…

The Barony of Tir Ysgithr is pleased to host the first War Practice of the new year on Sunday, January 8,
the day after Kingdom 12th Night, also to be held in Tir Ysgithr. Join us at Himmel Park as we make
ready for Estrella War.
For those whose interests lie in areas other than fighting, the A&S office will be hosting Arts and Ale
alongside the combat
scenarios. Lady Mishia and Mistress Magdalen will have a
pavilion dedicated to Arts and Sciences discussion, hand work, and an Artisan's Showcase.
We invite all brewers to donate a sampling of their Ales and Beers to share with the populace. Consider it
a Brew Tasting and opportunity to talk about the direction our Arts and Sciences are going in the Barony
and the Kingdom. We also invite all who wish to bring a snack dish to share so that we may have tasty
morsels to go with our Ale. We will also provide non-alcoholic beverages in the form of Iced Tea, Mulled
Apple Cider and
Water. There will also be a soup kitchen to provide hungry
fighters (and marshals and spectators) with sustenance. Donations of soups, breads and disposable
feast gear will be gladly accepted, and you may contact Lady Thyri to coordinate.

Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder the primarily affects girls. Rett Syndrome is the most physically
disabling of the autism spectrum disorders. Rett Syndrome is caused by a mutation in the gene MECP2 –a protein
that regulates the expression of other genes by turning them off at the appropriate time. The mutation is
spontaneous and the effects are seen in early childhood between 6 to 18 months of age. The disorder destroys
speech, movement, and functional hand use. Many children lose the ability to walk, they struggle daily with severe
seizures, scoliosis, breathing abnormalities, and often the child becomes dependent on others for a lifetime of
care. These children’s normal life expectancy is to the age of 14 to 17.

Great Helm is upon us. It is time to choose the new defenders of Tir Ysgithr’s Baron and Baroness! We will once again gather to watch our brave combatants take the field as they fight for the honor of becoming Captain of the Guard, Guardsmen, and Rapier Captain. A new Youth Champion will be
chosen as well. Details of the tournaments will follow closer to the event.
Saturday evening come dressed as your favorite Roman Citizen or Marauding Barbarian! Please join Tir Ysgithr as we continue the evening with a glorious feast and an evening of dance and drum! The new Bard of the Boar will be chosen during Feast. Those interested in rising to this challenge should be prepared to sing, act, or recite a poem or story to entertain all those in attendance. Details of the competition will be available closer to the event. Sign up will be at Great Helm Tournament and prior
to the start of the evenings’ festivities.
While Roman in nature, Lady Catalana is determined to feed the Barbarian that resides in all of us. She has therefore decided that the menu will consist of a number of courses to include cheeses,
breads, pickled vegetables, chicken, beef, lamb, and of course, decadent desserts.
Please be aware, roguishness, misconduct, troublemaking, and general naughtiness (aka shenanigans) throughout the day and evening will be tolerated, or brought before Their Excellencies
