    Reduce, Reuse, RecycleBY SELA GOTO

If we work together we can make the world a better, safer, and cleaner place. How can we do this youask? We can help by reducing, reusing, and recycling our waste. Once we get into the habit, our Hawaiian Islands willbe better for future generations. Everyone will have a cleaner life.

    How to Reduce

One way we can help our planet is by reducing. We can reduce our waste by composting leftover food. Sometypes of food are not compostable, so you can Bokashi it. When you dont compost, bokashi, or recycle them, theygo intolandfills and could take a hundred years or more to decompose. Instead of throwing away food scraps and fillinglandfills faster, we can find a cleaner way to reduce trash.

How to ReuseAnother way is to reuse. If we reuse old jars we can plant flowers and vegetables. You can also make cool crafts

and save lots of yummy food. Also if they are glass or plastic, it will take a long tome to decompose these items. As a result, the earth will thank us and also be safe.

How to RecycleThe last way we can help the earth is by recycling. You can recycle: paper, glass plastic, and even aluminum. Onrecycle day the paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum go to a factory where they are turned into newitems. The glass and aluminum are remelted and reformed into bottles and cans, paper is shredded and turned intonew paper, and the plastic is sorted, and then melted. The reason why is because there are different kinds ofplastic.

Effecting UsIn the end, our planet will be greener. This change will effect us because we will live better, healthier, and

cleaner. It will effect our planet too, by cleaning up mother nature and helping animals. No more water pollution,

nomore hurt animals, and no more bad health. Before you throw away that plastic bottle think to yourself, Is this something I can

recycle, can I help the earth by recycling this one bottle?

4th and 5th graders are learning about Europe and the Middle Ages. They aregoing to have a fair at the end of their journey, on February 10. So far, our journeys arevery fun! I am going to make a food from India. But, I am not going to tell you what it is!Well, those are the 2nd and 3rd and 4th and 5th grade journeys. What a season ofcelebration!

    Chinese ZodiacBy Lily Edwards

The Chinese use the lunar calendar. Our American horoscope usuallylasts a month or so, but Chinas Zodiac is based on years. There are twelveanimals in the Zodiac: snake, horse, dragon, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, boar, rat, ox, tiger, and rabbit.

Most of the third graders (and Mrs. B!) are born in the year of the sheep.Their personalities are that they are creative, gifted, intuitive, and laid back.Sheep are well-mannered and charming. They are known to be eccentric andcranky. To achieve success, they need to be well organized and have cleartargets to aim at. The sheep should carry a charm or figure of their secret friend, the horse, which is me!

Most fourth and fifth graders are born in the year of the snake. Oh wise andwonderful ones! Snakes have a fantastic combination of wisdom and beauty.Snakes are smart. They dress well and are somewhat able to tell the future. Those seeking advice or counsel will be seeking snakes. They should carry acharm or figure of their secret friend, the monkey.

This year is the year of the dragon. My teacher, Ms. Tyau, Claire E., Ginger, and Lindsey are all dragons. The dragon is the leader of the pack. Theyre thesoul of the party. Theyre always the first on the dance floor and their secretfriend is the rooster.

Well, that is Upper Schools zodiac animals. Try to find yours some-time!

QuailsIf you let your quail out inside your house make sure you have a quail-safe environment. If you hwet tiles then your quail might slip and get very worried if it cant run without falling. Also, make syou dont have a lot of crumbs on your floor. Your quail might taste some and get sick. If you havsome crumbs on the floor, you should run a light vacuum over the area to get rid of the crumbs.

ToucansToucans are colorful tropical rain forest birds that are verybeautiful. Toucans are illegal petswhich means they are pets which are not supposed to be pets. Toco Toucans eat insects, egglizards, and sometimes young birds. They also eat berries. Toco Toucans live in little flocks aneach flock has about six birds. I love Toucans.
