FROM THE SEMINARIAN With our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord last Sunday we officially left the Christmas season and entered the first week of “Ordinary Time” in the Church’s calendar. Ordinary Time is simply a designation of those weeks out of the year which do not fall in Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. Just because it is called “ordinary,” however, does not mean that it is unimportant or that it should be taken lightly. For a Christian, even ordinary life is extraordinary because of the love of God that prompted his coming amongst us to set us free and make us children of our Heavenly Father. This is the reality that we live in every day - throughout the whole year - no matter what season it is: we are God’s children now, and this is truly an extraordinary thing. Peace, Ezra Lippert

03 UPCOMING NEWS & EVENTS

ST. JOHN’S NEWS THANK YOU Our Faith calls us to be Christ to one another in our community. One of the ways in which that happens is in how we support someone in need, either in tangible support or simply in prayer. Alice DiMeglio, one of the coordinators of our prayer chain, would like to thank everyone who has offered their support to her as she has been recovering from her health issues. The support has been very much appreciated. DIGNITY OF LIFE Physician assisted suicide (PAS) is a hot topic across the USA, and there will be a bill proposed in the Minnesota legislature this 2020 to legalize it. We know that we are called to defend the dignity of life from conception to natural death. But we may not know that our

faith is a treasure of the art of dying well. We ask you to resist the fear tactics and embrace the call to genuine compassion and friendship. Over the next seven weeks, you’ll see one bulletin announcements debunking PAS claims and offering Catholic Christian hope and wisdom. Catholic Church statements and video witnesses are available at www.usccb.org/toliveeachday . PAS myth: People can’t afford pain management medications. Physician Assisted Suicide is a dignified out. Truth: For people over 65, hospice care is covered by Medicare. The VA and Minnesota Medical Assistance, as well as most private insurers, also cover hospice care. Catholic compassion: If people are struggling with the costs of health care or signing up for Medicare,

please contact Catholic Charities or your county’s social services. However, hospice care is covered by Medicare, and cost should not be a consideration. And we never want to encourage assisted suicide as a substitute for decent health care—we want to fix the health care system where it is broken. No one deserves an early death sentence due to their finances. SERVING THE NEEDS

OF OTHERS Bringing Holy Communion to the homebound. Assisting with Mass at a Nursing Home or Care Center. Would you like to know more about doing these things? Our Faith calls us to be “Christ to one another.” Helping in these areas is one way we can do that. Many people have reported that it was so rewarding to do that they felt they got more out of it than the people they went to serve. Now think about it and realize that every family is touched by this in their life…often multiple times.

There is always a need. Is NOW the time that you can help out??? Please contact Mike in the office for more information at: 625-3131.

FUNERAL CO-HOSTS NEEDED

This important ministry helps families in their time of grief. This is on an on-call basis. We need volunteers to share co-hosting responsibilities and coordinating for funeral luncheons one month a year. Training and support are provided. Contact the parish office for more information, or to volunteer. Please consider serving.

They do this a month at a time. Some of the ladies volunteer to do 2 months. They do a great job! We thank you for your dedication to this important ministry.

MASS TIMES AROUND THE AREA

PEACE THROUGH PLANNING Death comes to each of us. Often we have very little forewarning or control over the circumstances of our dying. Planning for these end times is a gentle way of being supportive of our loved ones who, while grieving our dying, must also try to make a peaceful, orderly, and spiritual transition to living without us. If you or a loved one are facing final illness, death, and funeral planning, or you just want to prepare for that un-known day when you will be called home, ease the bur-den by picking up a “P” booklet. This guide is available at any time in the parish office and is designed to make the planning for end times a logical step in the life of a responsible and caring adult. LOW-GLUTEN COMMUNION: If you must maintain a low-gluten diet, we offer a low-gluten consecrated host for communion. Follow the communion procession line where you see the Minister wearing “LOW-GLUTEN” necklace (in front of ambo/lectern). DIFFICULTY APPROACHING THE ALTAR: If you or someone you know has difficulty approaching the altar to receive communion, please notify an usher as he/she assists those in your row to the communion procession. A Minister of Holy Communion will be happy to come to you with the Eucharist. HEARING ASSISTANCE: Do you have a hard time hearing at Mass? Contact an Usher before mass to arrange for use of one of our LISTEN sound devices that will clarify and enhance your listening experience. You can continue to wear your hearing aid with the device if you prefer. You will need to provide your name and phone number for us.

07 AROUND THE COMMUNITY

TEC FOR ALL The next Pathways Together Encounter Christ (TEC) retreat is scheduled for February 15-17 at Good Shepherd Church in Jackson, MN. Retreat attendees must be 16 years of age or older and registration is $50. Adults are welcome on the retreat as well. What is TEC you wonder?? Pathways TEC is a three-day retreat weekend based on the Paschal Mystery: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Pathways TEC brings teens and adults together during the weekend to be participants in encountering Christ as the family of God. What Happens On the Weekend?? A TEC weekend works to build spiritual growth through participation in group activities. Although some time is given for individual prayer and reflection, the emphasis throughout the weekend is on group participation through music, discussions, talks, prayer, Scripture, Mass and celebration. Each day of the retreat has a central theme: “Die Day” is the first day – a day centered on the death of Jesus Christ. On “Die Day” participants reflect on many different aspects of their lives, focusing on better relationships with God, self and others. “Rise Day” is the second day, a joyous celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On “Rise Day” participants celebrate the presence of God’s love in their lives. “Go Day” is the third day – a day which explores the continuous call to spread the Good News. On “Go Day” participants recognize and prepare to carry forth the message of Jesus Christ. Our diocese has done an amazing job of providing opportunities for the laity to learn more about Missionary Discipleship. By following the Paschal Mystery, the TEC retreat is a beautiful example of this and follows the Encounter, Accompany, Community and Send on Mission format!!! If you would like to register or have any questions contact Monica at [email protected] or 507-363-1809. 9 DAYS FOR LIFE: 2020 Tuesday, January 21 – Wednesday, January 29. 9 Days for Life is a multi-faceted novena for the respect and protection of human life. Each day, a different intention is accompanied by a short reflection, suggested actions, and related information. Sign up to receive the novena by email, text message, or an app at www.9daysforlife.com.
