Notes from the Pastor Second Sunday In Ordinary Time
05 St. Dominic Catholic Church | 5354 S. Hwy 85 | Security, CO, 80911
My Dear Parishioners,
This week we return to ordinary time and the vestments are green again. We have about 4 ½ weeks until we begin Lent. As with all things we do in our lives, good preparation is necessary to have a good result. With this in mind, I would suggest that we begin to consider what this Lent will look like for us. It has to be about more that giving something up that we enjoy. Our lives should be different. To simply give up something, say chocolate or soda or coffee, and go about your lives as we always do is to miss the point of the season. Lent is designed to allow us time to reflect on our lives, see the areas we need to change and take the steps necessary to complete the change. This season isn’t about losing weight or stopping smoking (although these are good things), this season is about growing closer to our Heavenly Father.
Please don’t have a “knee jerk” reaction to Lent, give up something at the last minute and call it good. Take some time to really look at what will draw you closer to God. Look at what will truly help you in your faith journey. Here are some suggestions for you to consider. Please give Lent the preparation time it deserves. Remember, anything worth doing is worth preparing for.
Pray - Ask God, “What does my soul need?” and wait quietly. It might take several days of praying this question before we’re truly open and humble enough to know the answer.
Tell God (and yourself), “I want to be open to the graces of this Lenten season.” We can always be more open to God and His graces.
Here are some thoughts on making Lent meaningful
1. Begin each morning with the prayer: "Lord, I offer you this day, and all that I think, and do, and say."
2. Set aside 10 minutes a day for prayer, scripture reading or meditation. 3. Read about a saint, the lives of the saints or the writings of a saint. John Paul II and Mother Theresa are great
suggestions. 4. Attend Daily Mass as often as possible. 5. Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. 6. Be kind - Go out of your way to do something nice for someone else every day. 7. Attend the Stations of the Cross on Fridays. 8. Volunteer at our parish or the soup kitchen (as the pandemic allows) - It will give you a chance to help others. 9. Spend some time in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in our Adoration Chapel. 10. Abstain from meat for an extra day or two each week. 11. Invite an inactive Catholic to come with you to Mass. 12. Pray the Seven Penitential Psalms (Psalm 6, 31, 50, 101, 129 and 142). 13. Pray - Especially for people you don't like and for people who don't like you. 14. Turn off the television, cell phone, etc. and spend quality time talking with family members or friends. 15. Clean out closets - Donate gently used items. 16. Give Alms – a little more to the parish or to a Catholic charity 17. .Keep a Lenten journal with your spiritual insights, special intentions, people you want to pray for, hurts and
disappointments that you want to offer up, and progress reports on your Lenten resolutions. Remember, if you have any questions about our parish, our faith, our history or the Church, please feel free to send your questions to me at [email protected].
