The New Year is a good time to reflect on what hasgone before, and, what has changed in our weldingindustry. Many names conjure up thoughts of yesteryear. Here are a few I remember. Some have simply changedtheir names; some have been merged or been acquired, and others are simply no more. How many do youremember?

AWS Christmas/Holiday PartyDecember 2013

The AWS Detroit Section held their annual ChristmasParty at Genitti’s Hole in the Wall in Northville.Approximately 70 members were treated to a delicious7 course Italian meal complete with Canoli for dessert. After dinner, we were escorted into the theater, andenjoyed an amusing and interactive Christmas playon the “high seas.” Our own Andre Young was chosento participate in the first part of the play and did anoutstanding job of “pirate dancing” as instructed bythe captain. The “crew” (audience) joined with pirate“Arghs” and by swaying port and starboard whentossed by the high seas.

Our local talent showcased some outstandingimprovisation. Not only the professional performers, but some of the guest partici pants did an exceptionaljob on stage. We shared the audience with severalother groups, including a mayor from a small townin the UP. An evening of good company, good food andfun was had by all!

Check out our website (www.awsdetroit.org) foradditional pictures located on the events page.

Thank you to ATI, Degensha, Kuka and Obara fortheir continued corporate sponsorship, prizes andcompany props used in the performance.

A special thanks to AWS-Detroit Section for thegrand prize of 2 tickets to Ladies Night andcongratulations to the winner, Bob Donovan.

Finally, our sincere appreciation to Tom Slawnyk forhis time and effort in making this another wonderfulChristmas party for AWS Detroit.

To help answer this question, I have reached out to fellow AWS-Detroitsection Executive Board member Ashley Webel. Ashley is a Certified Welding

Inspector (CWI) and a Welding Educator with RoMan Engineering Services. Thisis her answer:

“The good news is that the Metro Detroit area offers plentyof opportunities to learn the basics of welding technology. Ourcity has catered to the doers and thinkers for many generations.

If you are looking for a more traditional style class, ourcommunity colleges offer structured classes where a formallytrained instructor will walk you through the process step bystep. They usually offer classes in most commonly used

welding processes. The links below are for several different schools in ourarea that have very credible welding programs. Please note that the list isnot all inclusive so if you live near another post-secondary institution, please check into their offerings.• Washtenaw Community College: http://www.wccnet.edu/academics/

Now if you are interested in more of a hands-on, just “getthings done” kind of a class, you may want to check one ofthe local member-based workshops. They offer a more basic, nonacademic approach and will get you well on your wayto designing and executing your DIY backyard projects. • TechShop: http://www.techshop.ws/take_classes.html?

For those true Do It Yourselfers out there you can alwaystry out the AWS online courses. They offer a variety of self-paced welding basics and welding safety classes. • American Welding Society: http://awo.aws.org/seminars/

These are not the only resources that our community offersfor the creative crowd. Please take the time and get to knowwhat your area has available.

I’m not looking to make a career change, but I would liketo learn basic welding and techniques – for simple

projects, etc., and to have a basic understanding of welding.Where would I go to get some training and/or hands on experienceso that I might be able to learn to weld correctly and safely?

FABTECH Show andAWS LunchSubmitted by Ray J. Roberts

I attended the Fabtech Show in Chicago and wasvery happy to see that the American Welding Society“Careers in Welding Trailer” had a number of studentsusing the virtual welding stations and gaininginformation on careers in welding. I would like to thankDave Landon for developing the Welding Merit badgefor the Boy Scouts of America. My Troop 1861 had theopportunity to earn their merit badges in September. Themerit badge has generated interest in several of thescouts to look into welding as a career. My wife, Minnie, and I attend the lunch to accept my Life Membershipfrom our AWS President, Nancy Cole. I was happy tosee and have the support of, our District 11 Director,Robert Wilcox and Detroit AWS members, AshleyWebel and Dan Galiher. One million and counting! KUKA Systems unit KTPO produces milestone Jeep Wrangler car body. Production

Toledo | Augsburg – The KUKA Systems manufacturing operation in Toledo, Ohioproduced its one millionth Body in White Jeep Wrangler back in May of this year, the latestachievement for a facility that ranks consistently among the most efficient body shops inthe North American auto industry.

The KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO), a wholly owned subsidiary of KUKASystems North America LLC, has built all of the Body-in-white Jeep Wranglers sold in theworld – both the classic two-door and the four-door Wrangler Unlimited models – since itbegan operations in 2006. Body-in-white is the first shop in the manufacturing process thatwelds the vehicle together.

KTPO is one of three plants comprising the Toledo Supplier Park, the only venture of itstype in North America. Different suppliers, each in its own building located at Chrysler GroupLLC’s Toledo Assembly complex, perform separate assembly functions for the Wrangler.Chrysler operates both the paint and trim and final assembly facilities.

“I could not be more proud of our entire team for their commitment to excellence inreaching this tremendous milestone and we look forward to making our second millionWrangler bodies,” says KTPO managing director Jake Ladouceur. The highly automatedKTPO plant, with 246 robots, builds 822 Wrangler bodies a day.

Given consistently strong consumer demand for the Wrangler, Chrysler has beenincreasing its output of vehicles. As a result, KTPO has adopted a tag relief system whichallows the production of bodies-in-white to proceed nonstop during each shift of the dailyshifts except during lunch breaks.

With its recent acquisition of the automobile assembly-related assets of Utica Enterprisesof Shelby Township, Michigan, KUKA Systems North America now is Number 1 supplierof manufacturing systems, including complete body shops and assembly lines, to the NorthAmerican automotive sector.

ABOUT KUKA SYSTEMS: KUKA Systems North America LLC, a Michigan-based company,is part of Augsburg-based KUKA Systems Group, a leading global supplier of flexiblemanufacturing systems for the automotive, aerospace, railway, energy and other industriesin which highly automated processes and other assembly line concepts are required. A workforceof over 3,900 around the world works on ideas and solutions for automated production, and develops innovative products for virtually all tasks in the industrial processing of metallicand non-metallic materials. The company’s growing portfolio of products and services ismarketed by subsidiaries and sales offices in Europe, the Americas and Asia. Last year wasone of the most successful ever for KUKA Systems, with worldwide order intake of €1.115billion (US$1.45 billion), an increase of 21.7% over 2011.
