Last Sunday, we celebrated Epiphany. The Baptism of the Lord follows the celebration of Epiphany on the Sunday after January 6. When the celebration of Epiphany is transferred to January 7 or January 8, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is transferred to the next day (Monday, January 8 or 9). This year, in 2017, we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, on Monday, January 9. Today’s Gospel reading, from the Gospel of John, takes up the story where we last left off: at Jesus’ Baptism. John the Baptist sees Jesus coming towards him and testifies, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, the priest prays: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to His supper." Let us consider those words before Holy Communion: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” That’s a direct quote from John 1:29 where John the Baptist says this as he points out Jesus

to his disciples. In the old translation of the Mass, recall that the invitation to Holy Communion was “This is the Lamb of God.” “This is” conveys no depth. Moreover, it was not what John the Baptist said to his disciples when he saw Jesus. In the Greek version of the Gospel of John, John the Baptist says “idou.” Idou is the imperative (command) of the verb to see, look, and behold. The word “Behold” carries a deep meaning. “Behold” carries a connotation of looking intently, contemplation, and wonder. We say, “that is something to behold!” when confronted with a wonder or something astonishing and remarkable. Thus, John is commanding us to look! Behold!

The exhortation to “Behold” is closer to John’s words found in the Scriptures. “Behold” is repeated to bring us to wonder at the truth that the Lamb takes away the sins of the world. This “beholding” is much deeper than just externally seeing the Host. It is recognizing in the Host the Lamb of God, it is having our eyes opened by faith and knowing Him in the breaking of the bread. As he did in the past 2,000 years ago, so too he continues to do for us today in the present: John the Baptist continues to point our direction, gaze, and attention to Jesus.

John the Baptist’s words are central to the Mass. All over the world, wherever the Eucharist is being celebrated, God's people are present at the one eternal sacrifice of the Lamb, and John the Baptist’s words remind us that this Lamb of God is now found present in the Host. In professing that Jesus is the Lamb of God in our celebration of the Eucharist, we are recalling His sacrificial death on the cross. Moreover, the Mass presents that sacrifice again, making it present to us right now. We can say that the Mass is a sacrifice because Christ instituted the Eucharist to make that final sacrifice available to us for all time. The Mass makes Christ’s sacrifice present to us and makes us part of Christ’s sacrifice.

Every time we celebrate the Mass, we hear John the Baptist’s words: “Behold the Lamb of God.” Do we see Jesus present in the Eucharist? Do we truly see God in our midst? The people around John the Baptist could not see Jesus as the Messiah, Emmanuel (God with us). They just saw an ordinary man, who looks the same as everyone else, and nothing more. In that very ordinary man Jesus, no one along the Jordan River, except John the Baptist, was able to see God present in the world. That is why John the Baptist cried out “Behold!” John wanted them to look and see deeper, with the eyes of faith. What about us? Are we like those people who cannot see Jesus’ presence among us? Jesus is still Emmanuel (God with us). Jesus has chosen to be among us under the form of ordinary bread. Bread, as ordinary and regular, like any other bread, but more. What do we see when we look at the Eucharist? Do we see just ordinary bread or do we see something more, do we behold someone deeper, Jesus present in our midst, present in the Host?

Please pray for God’s blessing and protection upon our nation, and God’s guidance and wisdom for the leaders of our country. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care and may St. Joseph pray for us.

El domingo pasado, fue la celebración de la Epifanía. El bautismo del Señor superviene a la celebración de la Epifanía el domingo después del 6 de enero. Cuando la fiesta de la Epifanía se transfiere al 7 de enero o al 8 de enero, la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor se transfiere al día siguiente (lunes 8 de enero o 9). Este año, en 2017, celebramos la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, el lunes 9 de enero. La lectura del Evangelio de hoy, del Evange-lio de Juan, retoma la historia donde nos quedamos, en el bautismo de Jesús. Juan el Bautista ve a Jesús venir hacia él y testifica: "He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo". Cada vez que celebramos la Eucaristía, el sacerdote ora: "He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita los pecados del mundo, dichosos los que son llamados a su cena". Consideremos estas palabras antes de la Sagrada Comunión: "He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita los pecados del mundo". Es una cita directa del evangelio de Juan 1:29, donde Juan el Bautista le dice esto a sus discípulos mientras señala a Jesús. En la antigua traducción de la Misa,

la invitación a la Sagrada Comunión era, "Este es el Cordero de Dios". "Esto es" no transmite profundidad. Además, no fue lo que Juan Bautista dijo a sus discípulos cuando vio a Jesús. En la versión griega del Evangelio de Juan, Juan el Bautista dice "idou". Idou es el imperativo (mandato) del verbo ver, mirar y con-templar. La palabra "Mirad" lleva un significado pro-fundo. "He aquí" lleva una connotación de mirar atenta-mente, la contemplación y el asombro. Nosotros deci-mos, "¡eso es algo para contemplar!" Cuando se enfren-tan con una maravilla o algo asombroso y notable. ¡Así, Juan nos manda mirar! ¡Mirad!

La exhortación de "he aquí", es más cercana a las palabras de Juan que se encuentran en las Escrituras. "He aquí" se repite para hacernos maravillarnos de la verdad de que el Cordero quita los pecados del mundo. Está "contemplación" es mucho más profunda que la visión externa del anfitrión. Es reconocer en la Hostia al Cordero de Dios, es tener nuestros ojos abiertos por la fe y conocerlo en la fracción del pan. Como lo hizo en el pasado hace 2.000 años, también lo sigue haciendo por nosotros hoy en el presente: Juan el Bautista conti-núa dirigiendo nuestra dirección, mirada y atención a Jesús.

Las palabras de Juan el Bautista son centrales para la Misa. En todo el mundo, dondequiera que se celebra la Eucaristía, el pueblo de Dios está presente en el único sacrificio eterno del Cordero, y las palabras de Juan el Bautista nos recuerdan que este Cordero de Dios se encuentra ahora presente en el Anfitrión. Al profesar que Jesús es el Cordero de Dios en nuestra celebración de la Eucaristía, estamos recordando su muerte sacrifi-cial en la cruz. Además, la Misa presenta de nuevo ese sacrificio, haciéndolo presente en este momento. Pode-mos decir que la Misa es un sacrificio porque Cristo instituyó la Eucaristía para que el sacrificio final estu-viera disponible para todos los tiempos. La Misa hace presente el sacrificio de Cristo y nos hace parte del sa-crificio de Cristo.

Cada vez que celebramos la Misa, oímos las palabras de Juan el Bautista: "He aquí el Cordero de Dios". ¿Vemos a Jesús presente en la Eucaristía? ¿Verdaderamente, vemos a Dios en medio de nosotros? La gente alrededor de Juan el Bautista no podía ver a Jesús como el Mesías, Emmanuel (Dios con nosotros). Acaban de ver a un hombre ordinario, que se ve igual que todos los demás, y nada más. En ese hom-bre muy común, Jesús, nadie a lo largo del río Jordán, excepto Juan el Bautista, pudo ver a Dios presente en el mundo. Es por eso que Juan el Bautista gritó "¡Mirad!" Juan quería que miraran y vieran más profundamente, con los ojos de la fe. ¿Qué pasa con noso-tros? ¿Somos como aquellas personas, que no podemos ver la presencia de Jesús entre nosotros? Jesús todavía es Emmanuel (Dios con nosotros). Jesús ha elegido estar entre nosotros bajo la forma de pan ordinario. Pan, como ordinario y regular, como cualquier otro pan, pero más. ¿Qué vemos cuando miramos la Eucaristía? ¿Vemos simplemente el pan ordinario o vemos algo más, ¿vemos a alguien más profundo, Jesús presente en nuestro medio, presente en la Hostia?

Por favor oren por la bendición y protección de Dios sobre nuestra nación, y la guía y sabiduría de Dios para los líderes de nuestro país. Que la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de la Buena Ayuda, nos ayude con su cuidado materno y San José ruega por nosotros. Vivat Jesus! ¡Viva Jesús!

W zeszłym tygodniu obchodziliśmy Święto Trzech Króli. Święto Chrztu Pańskiego celebrowane jest zaś przeważnie w niedzielę następującą po 6 stycznia. Jeżeli „Trzej Królowie” wypadają 7 lub 8 stycznia, obchody Chrztu Pańskiego przenosi się na najbliższy poniedziałek. W tym 2017 roku, Święto Chrztu Pańskiego wypadło w poniedziałek, 9 stycznia. Dzisiejsze czytanie z Ewangelii według św. Jana dotyczy Chrztu Jezusa i stanowi kontynuację zeszłotygodniowej lektury. Jan Chrzciciel, widząc zbliżającego się Jezusa, mówi uczniom: „Oto Baranek Boży, Który gładzi grzechy świata”. Podczas Mszy, ksiądz modli się dokładnymi słowami z Ewangelii Jana (1:29): „Oto Baranek Boży, Który gładzi grzechy świata. Błogosławieni, którzy zostali wezwani na Jego ucztę”. Rozważmy te słowa przed przyjęciem Komunii Świętej. W starszym tłumaczeniu tych słów nie ma

wyrażenia: „Oto” - „TO JEST Baranek Boży...”. „To jest” nie niesie wszakże ze sobą żadnej głębi. Co więcej, w oryginalnym greckim fragmencie, Jan powiedział uczniom coś innego, mianowicie: „Idou”. Jest to tryb rozkazujący czasownika: „zobaczyć, spojrzeć”. Słowo: „Oto” posiada głębsze znaczenie – nakaz patrzenia z uwagą, kontemplacji oraz zachwytu nad tym, co widzimy. „Oto” wyraża zachwyt nad czymś cudownym i niesamowitym. Tak święty Jan Chrzciciel wzywa nas: „Spójrzcie!” Słowo: „Oto” (najbliższe temu, co w Piśmie mówi Jan) powtarzane jest wielokrotnie, aby wzbudzić w nas zachwyt nad Barankiem, Który gładzi grzech świata. Takie spojrzenie wykracza daleko poza odbieranie Hostii samym tylko zmysłem wzroku. Jest to pojmowanie Baranka Bożego obecnego w Hostii. W tej chwili, nasze oczy otwiera dar wiary i widzimy Jezusa łamiącego chleb. Święty Jan Chrzciciel współcześnie wciąż robi to, co 2000 lat temu – kieruje naszą uwagę i wzrok ku Chrystusowi. Wezwanie świętego Jana odgrywa w całej liturgii niezwykle istotną rolę. Wszędzie na świecie, gdzie celebrowana jest Eucharystia, Lud Boży gromadzi się, aby dać świadectwo odwiecznej ofierze Baranka. Święty Jan przypomina nam zaś o tym, iż Baranek Boży jest w tym momencie obecny w Hostii. Głosząc w trakcie nabożeństwa, że Jezus jest Barankiem Bożym, wspominamy Jego ofiarę na Krzyżu. Ta ofiara dokonuje się na naszych oczach wciąż od nowa. Można powiedzieć, że jest nią sama Msza – w końcu Jezus ustanowił Sakrament Eucharystii dla nas po wsze czasy. W każdym nabożeństwie uobecnia się ostateczna ofiara Chrystusa, której my także jesteśmy częścią. Słowa Jana Chrzciciela: „Oto Baranek Boży” , słyszymy na każdej Mszy. Czy potrafimy dostrzec Rzeczywistą Obecność Jezusa w Eucharystii? Czy my faktycznie wierzymy w to, że Pan jest pośród nas? Ludzie wokół Jana nie dostrzegli, że Jezus jest Mesjaszem, Emanuelem (Bogiem z nami). Ujrzeli jedynie zwyczajnego mężczyznę i nic ponadto. Nikt nad brzegiem Jordanu (poza Janem Chrzcicielem) nie zauważył w Jezusie Boga obecnego na ziemi. Jan pragnął, aby oni spojrzeli na Jezusa głębiej, oczyma wiary. A co z nami? Czy my również, podobnie jak tamci ludzie, nie widzimy Jezusa obecnego wśród nas? Jezus nadal jest Emanuelem (Bogiem z nami). Jest z nami pod postacią chleba. Chleba z jednej strony takiego, jak każdy inny, ale z drugiej całkowicie niezwykłego. Co widzimy, patrząc na Eucharystię? Czy tylko kawałek zwykłego chleba? Czy może widzimy tam Kogoś więcej – Jezusa obecnego pośród nas? Prośmy Boga w modlitwie o błogosławieństwo dla naszego kraju oraz naszych przywódców. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

Both presentations will be led by Michael Ruzicki, who serves and editor and liturgical training consultant for Liturgy Training Publications and who is the director of music for Notre Dame de Chicago Parish. ********** St. Xavier University and Vicariate V will present screenings of “Full of Grace,” which is the story of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27 in the St. Xavier University McDonough Chapel, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago. “Full of Grace” begins 10 years after Christ’s resurrection. The film sheds light on a critical moment in the history of Christianity. Mary, the mother of Jesus, quietly awaits the return of Peter, whom Jesus asked to lead the Christian people. It tells of Peter’s travels and trials during those 10 years and Mary recalls the incredible mystery of her life with Jesus. “Full of Grace” Executive Producer Eric Groth will lead prayer and reflection. He will also share stories from his experience producing the film. Groth also is president and executive producer of Outside da Box, which produced “Full of Grace.”

LADIES OF THE ROSARY NEWS BEADS ... Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend and celebrate with the group. February Meeting The next general meeting of the Ladies of the Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Centennial (School) Hall, 5641 S. 73rd Ave. All women of the parish are welcome.
