GAUDETTE SUNDAY This Gaudete Sunday (marked by the third, pink candle on the Advent wreath) calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspec"ve. We really want to be free from our burdens but do not always know how to
achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a "me when we can learn to "do life differently," just like John the Bap"st instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gi+s God offers, not anxiety and despair. Advent is a "me of prepara"on. We not only prepare for Christmas, but for the day when Jesus Christ returns again. Unfortunately, we too o+en act like this is the only "me to prepare for such events. We should be preparing all throughout the year. Mother Teresa from Calcu/a had these (among many more) simple but wise quotes. They sum up everything that we should be prac"cing everyday to live our best lives, and with joy.

Ta niedziela Gaudete (oznaczona trzecią, różową świecą na adwentowym wieńcu) wzywa nas do radości, ponieważ Pan jest blisko. Czy twoje serce raduje się i śpiewa, czy też obciążone jest troskami życia? Możemy łatwo zostać przytłoczeni. Słabości i grzechy życia pożerają naszą radość i nadzieję,
którą Bóg chce abyśmy poznali. Ci, którzy są ugruntowani w wierze i posiadają głębokie życie duchowe, wiedzą, że Bóg jest blisko. Uświadomienie sobie tego stawia nasze życie w perspektywie. Wszyscy prawdziwie chcemy być wolni od naszych obciążeń, ale nie zawsze wiemy, jak to osiągnąć. Ciągle potykamy się i upadamy. Adwent to czas, kiedy możemy nauczyć się "żyć inaczej", podobnie
jak Jan Chrzciciel pouczał tłumy. Radość i nadzieja są darami, które Bóg nam oferuje, a nie lęk i rozpacz. Adwent to czas przygotowania. Nie tylko przygotowujemy się na Boże Narodzenie, ale także na dzień, kiedy Jezus Chrystus ponownie powróci. Niestety, zbyt często postępujemy tak, jakby to był jedyny czas na przygotowanie się. Powinniśmy przygotowywać się przez cały rok.
Matka Teresa z Kalkuty zostawiła nam te (pośród wielu innych) proste, ale mądre cytaty. Podsumowują one wszystko, co powinniśmy praktykować każdego dnia, aby żyć jak najlepiej i z radością.

Ques"on: What is the Hispanic Advent custom
of Las Posadas?
Answer: Posada is the Spanish word for inn or
lodging. Las Posadas refers to a tradi"onal Advent custom in
prepara"on for the birth of Jesus, beginning on December 16th. For nine successive evenings, groups reenact the search of Mary and Joseph for shelter in Bethlehem.
Two children dress as Mary and
Joseph, some"mes with Mary riding on an actual donkey. They are usually accompanied by children dressed as angels and shepherds along with the Wise Men. Adults accompany them
as they process to designated homes, where they sing Christmas songs and
request lodging. Part of the group enters the home and becomes the
chorus that responds to the request for lodging. In the beginning, the request is rebuffed. They move to
several more homes where the ritual is repeated. Eventually, at the last
home, their need is recognized, and they all enter the home where a party ensues. This is repeated in
different neighborhoods and homes each of the nine days.
While this custom teaches children
an important aspect of the Christmas story, it also emphasizes the need for
hospitality to strangers and the con"nual need we all have to make
room for Jesus in our "posada." As we struggle to arrive at a fair and
just immigra"on policy, especially with Mexico, it would be good to
recall the fact that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were also immigrants looking
for a hospitable place to dwell.
