Golfers at home and abroad speakhighly of our golf course. Inter-clubmatches on our home ground arealways oversubscribed by other clubs’members. In a recent review, thenumber of affiliated memberspatronizing our club far exceeded thenumber of our members using thefacilities of our reciprocal clubs, forcingus to institute measures to maintain thebalance.

The number of requests to hostprivate games, especially at the Putracourse, has also been on the rise. However, in order to safeguardmembers’ interests, only top rankedinternationally renowned competitionsare to be featured to enhance andmaintain the prestigious status of ourClub. We are indeed very honouredthat this year the MGA has selected

Our club was recently voted the Best Private Members’ Club in the country inthe Golf Malaysia Golf Course Poll 2007/2008. Other accolades received includedthe 3 rd best Clubhouse/Facilities in Malaysia and the 12th Best Golf Course inthe country. In fact, for a number of years the golfers who voted in the biennialGolf Malaysia Golf Course Poll have ranked us amongst the top clubs, confirmingthe high regard most golfers have for KGNS. Our vision of being a PremierMembership Golf Club in the country appears to have been achieved. The questionnow is whether we can sustain our position of supremacy. At the international level, we areaggressively increasing our affiliationstatus with well-known golf clubs. Wecannot help it, however, if some clubsdecide to terminate their long-standingrelationship with us for reasons that arebeyond our control. The steps taken tomaintain KGNS as a premier golf clubare well known to all especially at theinternational level and they shall beactively pursued. derstanding and supporting this issuewhen it is discussed at an appropriateforum.

Towering individuals are beingsought to occupy key positions toensure efficient action and excellentmanagement at our club. Members arealso urged to exercise wisdom to selectcapable, honest and hard workingcommittee members at our comingAGM. The adage that ‘the burden isours and the glory is yours!’ will alsobe reviewed to encourage participationof quality representatives. Practices atsuccessful and reputable golf clubs willbe examined and may be adopted asexpectations of members today arevery different from when the club bye-laws were first drafted.

As Captain, I am also obliged tonote here that despite all therecognition and attention that KGNShas received, and in spite of thegood image built, dedicated servicerendered, and the aspirationscommunicated, some memberscontinue to be indifferent, uncooperative, unfriendly and negativeon all matters affecting the Club. A feware fond of seeking cheap frivolousthrills around the table through badmouthing, back stabbing and rumourmongering leading to cowardly acts ofpoison pen letter writing and personalattacks, behaviour which should not be

evident at a club like ours. Thesemisdemeanors detract from the truespirit of friendship and from the goodclubbing atmosphere sought by mostmembers and is totally unacceptableat KGNS if we are to move forward.

I categorically state here thatbeing responsible club officials, club image is paramount and overridespersonal interests. Any unsubstan-tiated accusations and wild allegationsby anyone are purely malicious and willnever be tolerated by us. Suchirresponsible members should beostracized by all.

Our Vision, Mission, Values andPlan of actions are formulated to bringabout positive changes to our Club andto our members. As responsiblemembers we ought to internalize thesequalities to ensure togetherness inspirit and as support for us to makequantum leaps to greater heights. It isso easy to criticize others withoutvolunteering to share the burdens. Ifone really cares for the club, enjoysgolfing and the comradeship of clubmembers, please appreciate what wehave and not be selfish by causingdistress to others just to satisfypersonal grudges!

Happy Golfing!

Our Vision, Mission, Values and Plan ofactions are formulated to bring about

positive changes to our Club and to ourmembers. As responsible members weought to internalize these qualities toensure togetherness in spirit and as

KGNS hosts 106th MalaysianAmateur Open

CLUB News

Alex Tiong, one of Malaysia’s national players is alikely starter

The Putra Course will provide a stern test for participants

KGNS will play host to the 106th edition of the Malaysian AmateurOpen (MAO) on 22-25 May 2008. Billed as one of the oldest golfchampionships in the region, it was last held here in 1978. As in pastyears, the event is expected to draw an international field of golfers fromfar and wide and a large turnout is anticipated at Subang in 2008. Forexample, in 2007 at Nexus Karambunai Golf Resort, Kota Kinabalu, arecord entry of 123 participants from 18 countries was registered.

KGNS members may recall that theMAO has served as the launch pad formany a professional career in golf, sendingZainal Abidin Yusof, Tan Yee Khan, EshakBluah, P. Segaran and R. Nachimuthuinto the pro ranks. Former amateurs/par ticipants who have since foundinternational fame as professionals includethe likes of Australia’s Robert Allenby,Mardan Mamat of Singapore, Shiv Kapurfrom India, Filipino Juvic Pangusan andThailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and PromMessawat.

Immedietly after the Amateur Open,on 26 - 28 May 2008, KGNS will continueto serve as venue for the inaugural

Malaysian Match Play Championship. Thisis an all-new MGA sanctioned event wherethe top 32 players from the MAO will goon to compete, in a different but no lesschallenging format. In this respect, all MAOparticipants will be required to play 72holes to qualify for the Championship.

For a premier golf club such as KGNS,the staging of the Malaysian AmateurOpen is yet another opportunity toshowcase the pristine condition of our fair-ways and greens. More importantly, it isto serve notice, to demonstrate andreiterate to all and sundry our capabilityto run world-class tournaments, as wehave done in the not-too-distant past. It is

hoped that the Malaysian Amateur Openwill be the forerunner for KGNS to be thehost venue for yet another internationally-flavoured tournament, the MalaysianOpen in the near future.

Page 7: janmar2008

Berita Subang 7

For many, though, the Kelana has its own inherent charm and challenge – the fairways are narrower and, therefore, not altogether forgiving to errant shots! To approach the smaller and trickier greens, you would need to be straight andsure! Excellent conditions all, don’t you think, for any golfer looking to sharpen his or her game before taking on thelengthier and wider Putra? And yet…..

The Competitions Sub-Committee has taken stock of this and, to correct the anomaly, will continue to promote andrun Medal events at the Kelana by combining all the categories, i.e., Men, Ladies and Juniors. This will more than makeup the requisite minimum number of participants to validate the event and, more importantly, give to the Kelana Coursethe recognition and respect it deserves!

Happy golfing!

Kelana Course, Anyone?

Blue 188 metresWhite 176 metresRed 131 metresIndex 15

::::

Kelana Course Sultan’s NineHole No. 7188 metres (par-3)

This par-3, that plays 188 metres from the blue tee, is a straightforward hole but does not yield pars too easily. First, there’s the length, necessitating the use of a metalwood or hybrid club for many. Then thereis the danger of sending your ball out of bounds if your drive veers toomuch to the right. A bunker also guards the left side of the green. Onceon the large putting surface, read your lines with care as three putts arecommon.

There was a time when the Kelana Course was inappropriately nicknamed, in grave injustice,we might add, “Kiddies Corner”, with the connotation that it was suited only to novices andhigh-handicappers. The Main Course, now named “Putra”, was then, and still is, the place toplay real golf, if you choose to believe some of us in the KGNS family. Possibly, this could bethe underlying reason for the poor (“no quorum”) support, leading almost always tocancellations, of ABC Medals when scheduled at the Kelana Course. By contrast, there is ascramble for berths when the Medals are staged at the Putra!

15-year old Mohamad Hisyam bin Abdul Majid (A841-1G)did KGNS proud in finishing joint 3rd Overall in the recent Malaysian

National Trials organised by Malaysian Golf Association (MGA).

Hisyam DoesKGNS Proud!

The trials, a permanent fixture in the MGA’scalender held in early January each year is part ofthe Association’s effort to scout for new emergingtalent and also acts as a benchmark for selectionto the national team and back-up squads

Restricted to all amatuer golfers with handicap6 and below, the 6-day Trials attracted 47 malegolfers from all over Malaysia. The first two legs oftwo days each were held at Bukit Unggul GolfClub and Danau Golf Club, both in Bangi, whereafter a cut-off, the top 20 moved on to play thefinal for another two days at Bukit Jalil Golf andCountry Club.

Hisyam, handicap 4, played consistent golfduring the first two stages (75, 75, 75 and 72) tomake the cut and finish joint 4th. On day 1 of the3rd leg, a brilliant 2-under 70 moved him to 3rdplace on his own but a final round of 77 saw himhaving to share the spot.

Syabas Hisyam, who has been selected byMGA for the national team!

Besides havingPaula Creamer as an idol, she also

aspires to fly the KGNS banner highone day, on the international

golf scene!

If you ever pay a visit to our Junior GolfClinics, chances are you will come upon aprecocious eight-year old (as of 1June 2008!)named Aisyah bte Mohd Ismail (M768IF)engrossed in practice! Her interest for thegame developed, possibly, out of the sheerboredom of having to tag along with her dadon his frequent sessions to the driving range.

Be that as it may, the little lass now has abona fide affinity for the game. She trainsregularly at the KGNS Junior Golf Clinics, witha lot of encouragement and support fromparents Puan Roslinda and Encik MohdIsmail. Apparently, the friendly environment ofthese clinics helps make her very comfortablewhilst training to the extent that she often asksfor more time to improve her swing techniques! As an indication of her determination to excel, she can be a mite testy with Dad for his caring, though unsolicited, remarks during trainingabout “ball flight not taking off” or “I think youneed more training!”

Aisyah attends a national type primaryschool (Chinese) in Kg. Subang and there isan older 13-year sibling Mohd Ilyas, who alsoaccompanies her to the Sunday golf clinics atKGNS. One more thing, AIsyah is alwaysunmistakably decked out in her favouritecolour, pink. Does that ring a bell? Besideshaving Paula Creamer as an idol, she alsoaspires to fly the KGNS banner high one day,on the international golf scene! A tall order, you say? Well, you haven’t met Aisyah yet!

Ushering the Year of the Rat, “Gong Xi Fa Cai” was the theme forMembers’ Night held on the ninth day of the Chinese New Year.

The evening’s festivities began with the traditional Lion Dance, performed by the orphans from Ti-Ratana. Heralded by the pulsatingbeat of drums and the clashing of cymbals, the duo of lions wentthrough their energetic dance routine, much to the excitement of theeager crowd. Making its way from the lobby entrance of the clubhouseup to Bilik Buaya, to subsequently collect their “ang pow”, the pair oflions even found time to delight surprised diners at the Eagle’s Nest.

The night went on with a number of breathtaking performancesincluding a very skillful vase-balancing act by a Chinese acrobat,precision-timed sword play, face-change display and a Chinese dancetroupe that amazed everyone with their super-flexible body contortions.

As is the custom of KGNS, the Social and Recreation Sub-Committee invited some of the members in attendance to join in andtoss the “Yee Sang” (raw fish) dish with fond wishes of prosperity, longevity and good fortune for everyone in the year ahead!

That was exactly what was served up at the recent get-together to herald inthe Year of the Rat.

Other than minor hiccups with the timing of the Chinese music, the models gave a ‘Wow’performance that had their fellow golfers’ eyes bulge in disbelief.

The eight “models” paraded their own timeless collection of all the favourite “Cheong Sums”,the majestic “empress” gowns and other outfits with Chinese motifs.

All in all, the 9-hole golf (combined 2-ball stableford game) was a healthy outing, the foodwas scrumtious, the fellowship was fun, and of course, the fashion show tops it all.

GOLF Updates

Chicken RunWhat’s Goes On In KGNS -

The KUTU Game!

When good friends get together, someone is sureto come up with a bright idea that works wonders. Andso it was with the “Sunday Boys”, an ensemble of 20or more golfers that slug it out only on Sunday afternoons, for loads of fellowship and fun and a healthy dose ofcharity.

Captained by a charismatic and multi-l ingualA. Subramaniam (aka Japan Maniam for his fluencyin Japanese, as well as Thai, Mandarin, Indonesian, etc),the group includes stalwarts like Suppiah Subramaniam(S 476), S. Subramaniam (S 670) and many others.

Their setup is simple and pretty informal – someone inthe group is designated to book flights and inform the others, the format or mode of play is fixed, then all chip in RM30.00(for refreshments) into a pool and, last but not least, show

at KGNS

up at the tee box! Underpinning it all, though, is the seriousside of contributing to charity – group members fork outRM100.00 to be disbursed to support the needy, viz., anorphanage, in the name of the late Chandra Kumar’s family.

Obvious as it may seem to some, “membership” in theSunday Boys is not restricted to any particular ethniccommunity but open to all. Anyone is welcome to join in andthere have been occasions when guests from Japan,Thailand, USA and Europe have been known to join in thefray.

For K.J. Singham (J 075), playing with this group formore than three years has very much improved his golfgame. “We rotate flights and in case of shortage in poolmoney, we top up. We even have our own T-shirts, sponsoredby S. Subramaniam!” he said.

The Sunday Boys

With the focus on fellowship and to promote social inter-action among golfers of all ages, the “Chicken Run”, a 9-holefun event, is open to all members (men, ladies and juniors)with valid handicaps. Played off both the 1st and 10th Holes onStableford format for each Nine, the inaugural event heldon Wednesday, 16th January 2007 at the Putra Course drewmuch interest from golfers though the final turnout wassmaller than anticipated.

All are welcome! Early bird registration on a first-come-first-serve basis allows you to pick your preferred teeoff times while slots for walk-in competitors will be subject toavailability. So pass the word to your friends and fellow golfersand come around for a fun afternoon on 16th April 2008.

Datin Zahariah(B 071), one of thepioneer spousemembers of KGNS,mooted the idea ofthe “kutu” game aftertransferring back fromJohor Bahru. Inlooking to rekindle tiesand getting togetherwith ‘long-lost’ ladygolfer fr iends, shecame up with theinteresting notion of “pool and play”.

How it works is that the ladies, most of whom arehomemakers, put aside (from their marketing money, webelieve) and contribute RM 100 each month towards acommon pool.

Out of this central fund, the group then dishes outfor themselves at each golf outing the requisite food, prizesand “door gifts” too, not to mention a big helping of funand fellowship! “We have gained more friends instead,”says Datin Zahariah, “and since most of us are highhandicappers, we enjoy our games at the Kelana course— we only play 9 holes”. And that’s not all – to spice upthe golf, the mode of play is varied each time, e.g..Stableford format or 4-club competition or, when so inclined, the Texas Scramble. Just a thought…may husbands joinin? As caddies only?

Nevertheless, it was encouraging enough to warrant afollow-up fixture scheduled for:Date : Wednesday, 16th April 2008Time : First tee-off at 4.00 p.m., last at 5.00 p.m.Place : Putra CourseEntrance fee : RM 10.00 per head (includes high tea

and prizes)Prizes : 1st Nine 1st place – 2 roast chickens

2nd place – 1 roast chicken 2nd Nine 1st place – 2 roast chickens

What’s in A Name?KELAB GOLF NEGARA SUBANGor KELAB GOLF NEGARA, Subang

In the caseof KGNS, our club is the

first and the only golfclub in the country

opened and establishedby a Prime Minister of

the country!

What’s in a name? A name brings recognition and

identity. In this respect, ‘KGNS’ or ‘Kelab Golf NegaraSubang’ is quite misleading in a sense. It is situated in

Kelana Jaya rather than in Subang, and is only in thevicinity of Subang airport. That too has been closed and

is now known as ‘KLIA’, located near Sepang. Arguably, although the KLIA is situated in Sepang district, the

international airport is the main gateway into Kuala Lumpur and hence the ‘KLIA’designation with no reference to Sepang.

In the case of KGNS, our club is the first and the only golf club in the countryopened and established by a Prime Minister of the country!

Secondly, KGNS by its name, and mind you that in itself was created by an Actof Parliament, is a NATIONAL GOLF CLUB. It is not a golf club for the Subangnation or ‘negara Subang’, as the description implies! If in our Vision we want to bethe Premier Membership Golf Club in the country, then that national status must beboldly emphasised. We have to seriously consider a change to suit our given stature.

Would it not, therefore, be more appropriate to call our club, in full, ‘KELABGOLF NEGARA, Subang’, i.e., with its designated name highlighted in bold lettersto keep its identity and national status intact, and a comma and small lettering forSubang to indicate locality? Accordingly, in translation, we would effectively be calledNATIONAL GOLF CLUB, Subang. Simple though it may be, this little change reflectsa lot of difference in our character and validates our standing as a national heritageclub. Perhaps like all other organisations of similar status, we too would be deservingof an annual allocation from the government for our upkeep and development!

In much the same fashion ashis senior colleague MaintenanceSupervisor, Azaman, KGNSPersonnel Officer, Muzani binMusa, 38, began his career at the

Muzani Bin Musa

After 26 years of dedicated service,Amiruddin bin Kassim, Golf Supervisor, hascalled it quits at KGNS. He first came to us inDecember 1981 when, at the tender age of 17,he commenced employment at Poolside as apart-time waiter, in which position he wasconfirmed the following year. His true calling, though, was golf and Amir got his break when,in 1989, he was transferred to that departmentto serve as Caddy Master. Here’s how he hasprogressed through the intervening years:

In cataloguing his experiences in the near-3 decades at KGNS, Amir recalled the 80’s asa time of much close inter-action with membersand staff alike and in the 90’s the incident, whenas Caddy Master, he was struck on the headby a caddie, fainted and was on M/C for a

club in the F & B sector as a daily-rated waiter! That wasback in October 1988. A little over a year later, hisposition was made permanent and he continued servingat what was then called the “Mixed Lounge.” In 1991,not long after computerisation arrived at KGNS, Muzaniwas promoted to POS (Point-of-Sale) Clerk, mainly acashiering function in the Accounts Department. It wasan opportune time for the enterprising lad to enroll innight classes in computer studies on part-time basis atthe then Binary Business School, with an eye towardscareer advancement.

In 1998, however, all POS Clerk functions were takenover by the F & B Department and the position, in turnbecame redundant. This proved fortuitous for Muzaniwho had the opportunity to move to Administration andserve as a personnel clerk under Department head, thelate Mohd. Hashim Bin Hamdon, whom he still holds inhigh regard to this day.

“I have learnt a lot,” says Muzani, “and he was alwaysthere to guide me.” When Hashim was medically boardedout, in 2002, Muzani was promoted to assume his currentpost of Personnel Officer.

The father to a 4-year old boy, Muzani, who hailsfrom Tasek Gelugor, Seberang Prai Utara but has livedin Selangor since infancy, has many memories of KGNS,both fond and bittersweet. He recalls the elation he feltwhen the move to the new clubhouse was completedback in 1996, as it provided the sense of a new beginning!February 2002, was a sad time for him, however, withthe passing of Osman Ali, then F & B Supervisor andUnion Chairman, a good friend and colleague.

Muzani regards KGNS as his second home and hehopes that someday the club will gain internationalrecognition and that the values, as embodied in ourVision & Mission statement, are universally practised. The latter, he reckons, will strengthen the bond betweenclub members and staff, regardless of the change ofguard in Management Committees. In this context, helooks forward to continued development in KGNSparticularly in the area of facilities, given that our golfcourse is already top class!

Sifu Shukri bin Said (M 980) :“When I was a Junior GolfExecutive of KGNS, I observeda hardworking and responsiblewaiter and gave a strongrecommendation for Amir to bepromoted to Sports Assistant. He was willing to work oddhours without any hesitation.I’m proud of him for hisexcellent performance. Sadto see him leaving and wishhim all the best.”

Alex Hong (H 136) : “Goodstaff and very dedicated to hisduty. Wish him all the best.Sorry and sad to see him ‘coshe has managed to handlecompetitions very well andsmoothly.”

Mahrome Mohamed (M 597) :“The most hardworking andtrustworthy staff of KGNS!”

Bon Voyage, AMIR

month! The real challenges, though, were inthe last 9 years when, fully exposed to golf anda host of new golfers, he had to learn how “tosettle down and keep a happy mind” at alltimes! In any case, the most unforgettableexperience in his books was the time when hehad to testify in a court of law on a “wrongscore” suit!

Amir’s immediate plans are to venture intothe business of fish and chicken breeding inPaya Jaras, Sungei Buloh. For now, inacknowledging his thanks to all past andpresent Captains, Lady Captains, ManagementCommittees, KGNS members and staff, hehas singled out for special mention his sifu,Encik Shukri M. Said (M980) for all theguidance and knowledge given over the years.
