Welcome back to Term 2. Our P& C Mother’s Day stall was a great success last week due to the hard work and commitment of our P&C and volunteers. Thank you to our parents and community members who supported the stall through donated items or some coins for their children to spend. Our students really appreciated the opportunity and it was lovely to hear the children speaking so excitedly about spoiling their special person. NAPLAN tests were completed by our Year 3 and Year 5 students this week. These tests provide a snapshot of children’s achievement within a standardised test situation and are used by teachers and the executive team to guide whole school planning. Individual NAPLAN reports will be sent home to parents in Term 3. Teachers are also busily writing student reports for Semester One. These reports are based on information that the teachers have collected and analysed since the beginning of the school year. If you have any concerns or queries about your child’s progress at school, I encourage you to make an appointment to meet with their teacher before the end of the term. Congratulations to Miss White who got married and became Mrs Waldock on the holidays. Congratulations also to Mrs McClure whose husband broke a world record in swimming and won a place in the Paralympics later this year. We look forward to hearing more about Mr McClure’s achievements and following him in the Paralympics in September. Have you seen the lovely new sign on Seventh Road? As soon as the electricians finish their work we’ll be able to use it to share messages and reminders about events at our school. We’ll also be able to upload photos of special events which I’m looking forward to seeing in the coming weeks. Last term our Health and Wellbeing focus was on students developing protective behaviours which was supported by our Constable Care incursion. This term, our focus is on developing a whole school understanding of what bullying is; recognising the differences between bullying and disagreements; and developing consistent language and strategies to address
bullying when it occurs. To support this, our school has introduced Friendly Schools Plus which is a research-based program on supporting health and wellbeing in the school community and works in partnership with our Positive Behaviour Support focus. We are fortunate to have two wonderful teachers and our fabulous school psychologist who gave up their holiday time in April to become ‘Friendly Schools’ facilitators. Since the beginning of this term, our teachers and EAs have participated in training on Friendly Schools and all classes will be teaching about bullying throughout the term. If anyone is concerned about bullying, I encourage you to make an appointment to see your child’s classroom teacher.

On Friday 8 April, we held our school’s ANZAC service. Our wonderful choir was led by our Music specialist, Mrs Good, as they sang two songs during the service. It was lovely to see all students from Pre-Primary to Year Six complete the service with a whole school song and demonstrate such respect throughout this important event. A special thank you to our local RSL representative, Mr Ken Hepburn, who gave the commemorative address, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Roydhouse who laid a wreath on behalf of the P&C, members of the School Board and P&C who were in attendance as well. Thank you to all of our parents and families who attended.
This term we have introduced a whole school incentive system linked to our PBS acronym BEST (Be safe, Excel, Show respect and Take responsibility). BEST tokens are given to students both in the classroom and playground who display the attributes of BEST. Incentives for students who receive 25, 50, 75 and 100 tokens include certificates, icy poles, pencils, wristbands and badges. Students will also have their token go into a fortnightly draw where they could win prizes from the BEST prize box. Keep an eye out in on the Neerigen Brook Facebook page and in the newsletter for posts about our BEST students!
Congratulations to the 53 students who attended 100% and the 187 students who attended 90 % of Term One. Mrs Coffield will be presenting students with their certificates throughout the week. This term we are aiming for even more students attending regularly to school. One or two days may not seem like much but if your child misses school it adds up and impacts their education. Every day counts.
Missing 1 day a week = 40 days per year. This is 8
weeks per year. Over 13 years of schooling this
means 2 ½ years of missed learning opportunities.
Missing 2 days per week equates to 16 weeks per
year and 5 years over 13 years of schooling.

I hope this finds you well. The cool weather has finally arrived; I thought it had gone on holidays there for a while. There’s nothing better than being able to sleep with some covers. The down side, as we all know is the germs that lurk about seeking someone to latch onto. If that’s you, stay warm, drink plenty of fluids and look after yourself. In my travels I found a poem I’d like to share with you.
JUST ONE By Unknown
One song can spark a moment, One flower can wake a dream.
One tree can start a forest, One bird can herald spring.
One smile begins friendship, One handclasp lifts the soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea, One word can frame the goal.
One vote can change the nation, One sunbeam lights the room.
One candle wipes out darkness, One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start the journey, One word must start in prayer. One hope will raise our spirits, One touch will show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom, One heart can know it’s true,
One life can make a difference,
You see, It’s up to you!

On Monday 2 May the children in Kindy Green were very lucky to have a special visit from the Teddy Bear Hospital. The trainee Doctors from The University of Western Australia came to speak to the children about visiting the doctors about how they help in the community.
The children participated in lots of fun activities involving their teddy bears. While the teddies were waiting patiently for their turn to see the Doctor they played lots of fun games including, ‘What’s the time Mr Teddy’, We’re going on a bear hunt’ and ‘Apple, apple, banana’. The teddy doctor helped us to fill out Teddicare cards, writing what was wrong with the teddies before the teddy was moved to theatre for a x-ray. The chalk drawn x-ray showed the problem with the teddy and helped the nurse be able to know where to bandage the teddy.
All the teddies had their injuries bandaged and were prescribed a fruit to be taken with lots of love and cuddles.
It was a fantastic morning and the kindergarten children really enjoyed their visit. All of the teddies are now feeling 100% better!

You will see this up around the school, in classrooms and as an attachment to this week’s newsletter. This matrix outlines the expected behaviour for all students. The teachers will begin teaching PBS lessons linked to the points on the matrix and artwork that accompanies our PBS motto of BEST will be presented soon.
