Our afternoon guest speaker was Steve Thaxton, Executive Director of the Osher National Resource Center. Steve presented slides that demonstrated that “To know one OLLI is . . . to know one OLLI.” In other words no two OLLIs are alike.

For my part, I stuffed a folder full of materials that all OLLI leaders should know: the strategic plan, budget, OLLI philosophy regarding shared leadership, member giving and our organizational chart. If ever you have questions about your OLLI organization our volunteer leadership is well prepared to answer them!

OLLI’s Health Check-up If you attended the recent OLLI annual meeting at the beautiful

Portsmouth Country Club, then you already know that our OLLI

organization ended Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 in great health by

meeting or exceeding our vision, mission, values and strategic

goals! How do we know that? Read on to learn about a few of

the indicators. (continued next page)

Volunteers Engage in Leadership Event On September 8 nearly 50 OLLI volunteers gathered at the Concord campus of Granite State College to be part of a daylong workshop designed to:

foster self-awareness and expand effectiveness in a volunteer role,

discover how personality traits influence decision making,

learn how OLLI at Granite State College measures up to the 120 OLLIs across the country, and

become familiar with materials related to the structure and function OLLI at Granite State College.

The morning began with a warm welcome from Granite State College President, Mark Rubinstein, who reminded us that in the face of adversity such as the two recent devastating hurricanes to our south, the fabric of our OLLI community is a strength that our members should treasure. Mark ended his remarks by reaffirming GSC’s commitment to our organization. Mark and his wife are both OLLI members.

Under the direction of Johnna Herrick-Phelps, VP for Academic Affairs, Graduate Studies and with the assistance of Rachael French, Business Partnership Coordinator, Granite State College Adjunct Faculty Dennis Martino led us through an abbreviated version of the Meyers-Briggs personality assessment. He demonstrated how individuals’ personalities and styles affect communication which in turn impacts the effectiveness of teamwork when volunteers work in committees on OLLI matters.

On October 27, 2017, former Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, John T. Broderick, Jr. will be recognized as an OLLI New England Notable.

Justice Broderick has had a personal interest in mental health issues for many years and will discuss the program Change Direction. Representatives from behavioral health, businesses, education, law enforcement, medical care, and policy makers in New Hampshire have joined together to launch the Campaign to Change Direction New Hampshire. This program is the first statewide effort of The Campaign to Change Direction, a national initiative to change the culture of mental health in America. The event will be held at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, 100 Saint Anselm Drive, Manchester, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

During his time as Chief Justice of the NH Supreme Court, Justice Broderick appointed a Citizens Commission on the state courts so that citizens could examine how the courts functioned and how they

New England Notable John T. Broderick, Jr. Submitted by Margaret Adams, Class of 2013

could be improved to better serve all who needed them. He created the first ever business courts, expanded family court, mental health court and drug court dockets across the state. After stepping down as Chief Justice he became Dean of the law school at the University of New Hampshire. During this time, he founded the Warren B. Rudman Center for Justice, Leadership and Public Policy at the school.

Prior to entering public service, Justice Broderick was a civil trial lawyer in private practice for over 20 years and formally served as president of both the New Hampshire Bar Association and New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Justice Broderick now serves as a Senior Director of Public Affairs at Dartmouth Hitchcock.

All OLLI members and their guests are welcome to attend this event at no charge. RSVPs are not required. Due to policies at the NH Institute for Politics, outside food is not be permitted at the event. Individual water bottles are acceptable.

First and foremost we are growing in popularity and

addressing member preferences

More members have joined OLLI at Granite State

College (we peaked at 1216 members in FY2017!)

More courses were offered (395 in FY2017!)

Our members took more classes (6,287 registrations in

FY2017!)

Our members value each other’s company and OLLI, and enjoy

volunteering to support OLLI

Volunteerism continues to be a strength. Last fiscal year, 518

OLLI members volunteered at one time or another for an array

of activities that included cooking/baking, organizing social

events, assisting in the OLLI office, assisting a class presenter,

presenting a class, or serving on a number of different local or

statewide committees. (Jump in . . . there is plenty of room for

you in the volunteer pool!)

Our fiscal health is strong

Overall we saw an increase of 27% in FY2017 revenue as

compared to FY2016 thanks in part to a $50,000 bridge grant

from the Osher Foundation and unanticipated interest income

earned from our second Osher endowment. Together these

accounted for 36% of our revenue while membership and class

fees accounted for 44%.

Members recognize the added value that OLLI brings to their

health and social well-being

Member contributions plus sponsorships amounted for 6% of

revenue. 353 members donated $18,073 and we sincerely

thank them for their generosity.

We are responsible stewards of the budget

In terms of expenses, an increase of 51% can be attributed to

the rebuilding of our website and expenses associated with the

purchase of the online membership and registration system.

Both of these were planned and intentionally supported by the

Osher bridge grant. Full time staff equivalencies remained the

same at three in FY2017.

We are enhancing organizational sustainability

Arguably the most significant indicator of OLLI’s good health

may be the current fund balance or “rainy day fund” which has

grown in the past three years by 25% to $278,740. Healthy

organizations rely on strong fund balances to see them through

“rainy days.” OLLI is able to add any net income realized at the

close of each fiscal year to the fund balance. Although it is

managed by the University System of NH, these funds are

restricted to OLLI use only. Adequate fund balances ensure

organizational sustainability during periods of unforeseeable

challenges.

We are member-driven

Your copy of the OLLI Annual Report detailing OLLI’s health in

an infographic format will arrive in the mail in mid-October.

Please take the time to unfold it and look it over. Take pride in

the health of an organization that supports your personal well-

being. Congratulations on a good year!

Manchester Membership Event Submitted by Margaret Adams, Class of 2013

On October 20, 2017, OLLI in Manchester will offer a membership event entitled A Mystery: So You Think You Know OLLI? It will be an afternoon of fun, food, and games and also an opportunity to have all the questions answered you didn't know you needed answered.

The event will be open to OLLI members from all sites and their guests and will be held at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, 335 Smyth Road, Manchester. Registration will start at 1:00 p.m. and the program will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend this event. RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to attend.

40% of OLLI members, 482 in all, responded to a Travel Committee survey in late August. That’s outstanding, thank you! The Travel Committee is busily reviewing the data which will help guide decisions about OLLI trips for the foreseeable future. Here’s some information we gleaned from your responses.

Who responded? [NOTE: All responders do not answer every question, so totals will differ] Members who:

have taken OLLI day trips 95

have taken OLLI overnight trips 74

haven’t taken any OLLI trips (yet) 268

are interested in travel with OLLI 193

might be interested in travel with OLLI 158

are not interested in travel with OLLI 127

In making decisions about future trips, the Travel Committee is, of course, most interested in the opinions of those who definitely or probably would participate in OLLI trips. Preferences of those who might be interested are also considered. And knowing that only 27% of respondents are not interested suggests that trips are an important member benefit for OLLI at Granite State College, worthy of the time and effort expended by the Travel Committee.

Some of the comments offered by survey respondents: -- from Conway and Seacoast, several suggestions that pick-up locations not be only in Concord and Manchester -- “My husband and I would definitely be interested in group travel. At our age we don't enjoy the hassle of planning our own trips.” -- “OLLI travel is especially beneficial for single members who would like to travel but don't have a travel partner. For both singles and those with partners, it provides a special experience because it combines travel and friendship.” -- “great job so far - OLLI folks are fun to travel with!!!!” -- “I'm packed. You Rode the Waves with Us at the Third Annual Meeting Submitted by Sandy O’Neill, class of 2013

The Portsmouth Country Club served as the host site for the OLLI at Granite State College Third Annual Meeting, organized by Seacoast volunteers. Eighty OLLI members attended with some new member faces in the crowd. What a treat to have new members interested enough in the organization to attend the meeting!

The Annual Meeting Committee was led by Judy Edwards and Pat Nicolino, who did a superb job of planning the venue, meal, program, and entertainment. Their committee consisted of a number of volunteers who were charged with specific tasks. Ann Wissink was invaluable as the collector of Seacoast attractions’ flyers, and a variety of other tasks. Other volunteers for this event included Beth Wagner, John Russell, Donna Lawrence, Nan Nutt, Michele Boulanger, Carl Nicolino, Doug Adams, Tessa McDonnell and Sandy O’Neill. The Seacoast also received support from Jane Fletcher, Laurie Galletta, and Sharon Kace.

As you will be able to see from our annual report, OLLI is in good shape! Jane Fletcher talked about growth in both members and classes, but also financial growth. She also pointed out the importance of members donating to this organization in order to have some savings in reserve in case OLLI has additional needs in the future. The Bernard Osher Foundation supports a culture of giving that emulates the spirit of giving that Bernard Osher initiated when he invested in 120 lifelong learning institutes and promotes long-term sustainability for each of them. Finally, Jane explained the organizational structure of OLLI, an explanation that is most likely very helpful to our new members and some veteran members alike.

Entertainment was provided by Susie Burke & Dave Surrette, folksingers. They remarked that Judy Edwards, a retired midwife, delivered one of their children, and they had originally lived in the Conway area so they knew a number of Conway folks attending the meeting. It’s definitely a small world! Susie and Dave started the entertainment while attendees served themselves from a full brunch buffet and enjoyed it while listening to many original folk tunes.

The weather did not fully cooperate, but it definitely wasn’t a wash-out. The Seacoast Central Committee (all of whom sat on the planning committee) hopes that attendees were able to get out to some of the attractions in the Portsmouth area after our meeting closed.

Monumental Out & About in Manchester Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Class of 2012

Popular OLLI presenter and expert Manchester tour guide, Aurore Eaton led 22 OLLI members through four parks to visit and admire their war memorials. Two hours of walking in beautiful weather carried the attendees through Veteran’s Memorial Park, Bronstein Park, Victory Park and Pulaski Park.

Aurore regaled the group with fascinating facts about the statues, monuments and the parks themselves. Did you know that there are only three equestrian statues in the entire state of New Hampshire? Two are in Manchester and one in Portsmouth. And, were you aware that most of the parks in Manchester originally had ponds in them? The reason had nothing to do with aesthetics; rather; the ponds served as a water supply for the fire department!

Conway members greatly enjoyed the Annual Meeting on the Seacoast in September. (picture at right). We are now in the middle of finding new classes for the Spring term. Thank you Sharon Kulik and Deb Ayers for joining our meeting in September. We really appreciate all your super ideas. If other members also have suggestions please contact Curriculum Committee Chair, John Peterson at [email protected]. Thanks!

Thanks to Our Donors Submitted by Sandy O’Neill, Class of 2013

OLLI at Granite State College was the beneficiary of many generous member donors between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017. These donors have stepped up and matched their enthusiasm for OLLI with a donation to secure OLLI’s financial health for years to come.

Did you know that if every OLLI member donated just $20 during this fiscal year that over $24,000 would be raised? We continue to ask for donations for two main reasons: 1) The Bernard Osher Foundation, encourages member giving as a way of recognizing and supporting the significant investment made by Mr. Osher to enrich their lives through lifelong learning and social engagement, and 2) Circumstances such as a drop in the stock market that would reduce endowment interest currently representing almost a quarter of our annual revenue.

The following donors have contributed to the financial health of OLLI along with others who wish to remain anonymous.

September was OLLI statewide meeting month with

Leadership Day and the Annual Meeting, two major events

demanding a major portion of our attention for the month.

(Details of these events can be found in the Hall Street

article on page 2.) What I would like to discuss is not the

meetings themselves, which were well worth the time of the

attendees, but the preparation.

As with every OLLI event, hours of planning, decisions

about theme, food and functions through to the execution

of every necessary aspect was handled by a group of

volunteers in conjunction with staff. This was especially

true of the Leadership Day workshop which was led by a

team of volunteers who were given a difficult assignment.

They worked tirelessly to bring about a combination of

expanded self-awareness plus important OLLI information

to our committee members to help to increase their

leadership ability for our organization. What a superb job

these people did: Margaret Adams, Su Bennett, Peg

Fargo, Jane Fletcher, Jacki Fogarty, Laurie Galletta,

Sandy O’Neill, Tessa McDonnell and John Russell.

According to the attendees from all four sites this day lived

up to and exceeded their expectations. Thanks to all.

11 days later . . . On approaching the facility we were

greeted by OLLI signs confirming that we were on the right

track and going in the correct direction to the Annual

Meeting. We were greeted graciously at the top of the

stairs and then again at the registration table; one

immediately felt welcome and happy to be there. Every

detail was perfect, from the coffee and sweet rolls upon

arrival to the lovely floral arrangements on the tables plus

a few unexpected treats . . . with plenty of time to socialize

with members from around the state. The speeches were

minimal but filled with pertinent information about the

organization. And the entertainment was enjoyable and fit

for the occasion.

Once again a group of our volunteers provided the

planning, the dedication and the effort to provide both an

information-packed event and a day of camaraderie and

fun. So many of the Seacoast volunteers worked on this

event and our sincere appreciation is extended to: Doug

Adams, Michele Boulanger, Donna Lawrence, Tessa

McDonnell, Carl Nicolino, Nan Nutt, Sandy O’Neill, John

Russell, Ann Wissink and Beth Wagner, and especially to

Judy Edwards and Pat Nicolino, coordinators of the day.

One could not come away from this event without feeling

that the day was well utilized.

Two different types of events were presented in September,

each led by a team of OLLI volunteers, sharing their

talents for the good of the organization. That is why OLLI

continues to succeed.
