Reinforce critical OAA science concepts with a

this Spring!Bring your

youngest explorer to…

April 13–16, 2011, at COSI

The COSI Team understands that science is a challenging subject for teachers. Materials are difficult to obtain, science experiments can be messy, and science content is constantly being updated. Sometimes what we remember from our gradeschool science class changes. Pluto is no longer considered a planet; in earth science, the focus has shifted from global warming to global climate change. It can be overwhelming. Luckily, the COSI Team can help.

With COSI, you can…

• Reinforce the science concepts your students need to know for the OAA during a visit to COSI on a Grade Level Day designed just for them (page 2).

• Increase your students’ understanding of erosion, and keep your classroom clean, by scheduling an erosion workshop during your field trip (page 4).

• Sharpen your teaching skills and stay current with science content changes by attending a teacher workshop this summer (page 11).

We are here to support you. Let us know how we can help.

Homeschool WorkshopsSingle-day science workshops for students ages 6–13 Parents, learn with your children using materials that you might not have at home (LEGO Mindstorm Robots, stop-motion animation software, alternative energy sources, and more) to better understand real and relevant science concepts. Workshops include pre- and post-visit lessons for use at home to further your child's science inquiry. Participants socialize with other young scientists while exploring science careers, too!

Homeschool Workshop Topics (each workshop meets once for two hours):

Sound | January 6, 2011 (10am–Noon OR 1pm–3pm)Explore the science of sound. We’ll learn about the vibration of waves that make sound and the ways they travel through air and other media.

Intermediate Robotics | February 3, 2011 (10am–Noon OR 1pm–3pm)Become part of an engineering team as you learn to build and program a LEGO Mindstorm robot.

Gross Science | March 3, 2011 (10am–Noon OR 1pm–3pm)Explore the human body and some of the ways your body protects itself. Gain a better understanding of blood, runny noses, and upset stomachs. Design your own “wound” to amaze (and gross out) friends and family.

Animation | April 7, 2011(10am–Noon OR 1pm–3pm)Learn how advancements in science and technology have made the art of animation more efficient and cost effective. Create your own animated film, too!

Register: Call 614.228.2674 (registration closes one week before workshop)Cost: COSI Members $20 for one parent & one child, or reserve three workshops together for $54 (COSI Members only); additional family members, $10; nonmembers $40 for one parent & one child; additional family members, $20. Early Childhood Science Toddler OutreachHands-on science for ages 18–36 months delivered right to your child care center.

COSI's Early Childhood Team will bring science right into your toddler classroom. Our workshops begin by reading a popular early childhood book, followed by hands-on activities that promote fine motor, gross motor, language, cognitive, and creative expression. These experiences are closely connected with Ohio's Infant and Toddler Guidelines. Toddler Outreach is available in Franklin County and its contiguous Ohio counties.

COSI conducts each program at your school with one COSI Outreach Educator and school-provided adult volunteers (teachers, aides, or parents). Each program is 45 minutes long and can accommodate up to 15 toddlers (18 to 36 months).
