Mitchell. 12 January 2006 | Volume 4 | Issue 5 in the NEWS THUGS & ARTISTS, CARNIVAL & MUSIC Humanities Research Day 2005 Ashley Fellow, Tim McGee “I love sitting here being enter- tained by peoples’ pastimes.” It was a random comment over- heard at this year’s Humanities Research Day at Trent University, and while professions may be a more apt description, it was a fitting sentiment for this annual gathering where Trent researchers present their work. Even the cold and exam-time scheduling couldn’t conspire to keep people away from Traill College Lecture Hall where the atmosphere was relaxed and the floor open to the exchange of ideas. This year’s proceedings, titled Thugs & Artists, Carnival & Music, featured nine presentations split into four sessions. Following introductory remarks that addressed the importance of Trent’s research, one of this year’s two Ashley Fellows, Tim McGee, led off the forum. His discussion of musical iconography portrayed in Medieval and Renaissance art provided a glimpse into music’s role during these periods, from its performance to its players. While depictions of obsolete instru- ments have helped in reconstruc- tion efforts today, he cautioned against relying on iconography alone as factual representation due to the enduring distortions of artistic license. As Mr. McGee puts it, “these are the perils and bene- fits of musicological research”. This analysis of the art of ages past led into Trent Professor Stephen Katz’s presentation regarding the creative capacity of the aging artist. Prof. Katz consid- ered two different narratives, one of peak and decline and one of artistic maturation. The former, represented by Titian, cites how the artist’s work plateaued in midlife, his output lacking any substance from then on. Michelangelo’s growth as an artist, however, spanned a life- time, and his evolution continued from strength to strength. Another artistic biography followed with Professor Marit Munson’s profile of noted Pueblo artist Nora Noranjo-Morse, whose contemporary pottery and poetry challenge established notions of Native art. Noranjo-Morse explores themes of identity and culture through a series of work embodied by a Native character named Pearlene, a garish and opinionated alter ego for the artist. Through Pearlene, she challenges the stereotyping that Natives endure while bucking long-held assumptions that Native art must be primitive or exotic to properly qualify as authentic. Issues of ethnicity and racism also appeared in Professor Tim Stapleton’s discussion of the primarily black Rhodesia Native Regiment, and Suha Kudsieh’s analysis of how Muslims are portrayed in two medieval texts, one more tolerant than the other. Prof. Stapleton’s talk centred on the racial segregation and ethnic stereotyping that accom- panied early colonial society in Southern Rhodesia. Cast against the backdrop of WWI, a volun- teer corps of blacks proved them- selves far more adept at waging this type of bush war than their colonial counterparts. In the field, factors of race and ethnicity mat- tered little where ability counted most. Despite this, established hierarchies never permitted these soldiers to ascend beyond a certain rank, let alone enjoy the benefits of good equip- ment, medication or even proper footwear. Prof. Kudsieh’s discussion weighed the depictions of Muslims in Guillaume de Tyre’s twelfth century Historia, which promoted a far more tolerant account when compared to that of The Caxton Eracles. This medieval account of the First Crusade from the fifteenth century portrays Muslims as more barbaric, an approach that Caxton invoked as part of a defensive posturing used by the West to protect themselves from a powerful East. Naturally, the nuance of language is at the root of much research in the Humanities. But when language is revamped to a point where it balances the famil- iar with the original, we enter a new realm. Professor Martin Boyne’s examination of the artifi- cial language developed by Russell Hoban in his novel Riddley Walker (known as ‘Riddley-speak’) reveals how remarkable the author’s efforts are. His systematic structuring of this language is uncannily natural in design (“If you cud even jus see 1 thing clear the woal of whats in it you cud see every thing clear.”). With a distinct cadence, consis- tency and morphology, this lan- guage stands up to linguistic scrutiny, which is an achievement unto itself. Other afternoon sessions included Professor Karena Kyne’s analysis of the legal, political and ethical implications of Guantanamo Bay, and Professors Julian Haladyn and Miriam Jordan’s treatment of Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas concerning the ‘carnivalesque’. Prof. Kyne refers to the “State of Exception” that ‘Gitmo’ represents, and the dangers of how the evident political and legal complexities in this veritable limbo have been “smoothed out” and rendered impertinent. The result goes beyond lack of accountability to a point where ethical responsi- bility is conspicuously absent. Drawing inspiration from Bakhtin, Professors Haladyn and Jordan took the opportunity to feature some images from an upcoming exhibition of contem- porary video artists in which they will explore humour in its more irreverent, grotesque and pro- fane forms. How apt that a day of analy- sis and discussion should end with speaker Professor Hugh Hodges questioning how best to tackle the methodology of research itself, notably with an examination of the lyrics of The Clash, The Specials and XTC, among others. Closing the ses- sion with musical accompani- ment, it seems clear that for Prof. Hodges, as for most of these presenters, it’s difficult to separate the passion from the. “I love sitting here being enter-tained by peoples’ pastimes.” It was a random comment over-heard at this year’s HumanitiesResearch Day at Trent University,and while professions may be amore apt description, it was a fitting sentiment for this annualgathering where Trent researcherspresent their work.

Even the cold and exam-timescheduling couldn’t conspire tokeep people away from TraillCollege Lecture Hall where theatmosphere was relaxed and thefloor open to the exchange ofideas. This year’s proceedings,titled Thugs & Artists, Carnival &Music, featured nine presentationssplit into four sessions.

Following introductoryremarks that addressed theimportance of Trent’s research,one of this year’s two AshleyFellows, Tim McGee, led off theforum. This was followed by a perfor-mance of Anishnaabe MaanjiidwinII, an Indigenous Performance withstudents of the Indigenous Dance

That opening paragraph ofFat: the Anthropology of anObsession, edited by Trent

University Anthropology profes-sor Dr. Anne Meneley and herfriend and fellow anthropologistDr. Don Kulick of New YorkUniversity, sets the stage for across-cultural exploration of theworld of fat in all its forms.

Thirteen anthropologists,including professors Meneley andKulick, and one fat activist con-tributed to the book.

Fat’s chapters range in topicsfrom hip hop culture’s Phat tohow Swedish teenagers talk aboutbody fat to a mythical Andeanvampire that sucks fat instead ofblood.

“We wanted to have everyonecontribute papers that looked at

fat as a substance, fat as a condi-tion of bodies, fat as an aestheticand fat as a moral judgement,”said Prof. Meneley.

“With the book, as a whole,we tried to avoid mainstreamNorth American discourses aboutfat. We’re widening the scope ofhow you can understand fat inall these different ways,” she said.

Worldwide, “Fat is becomingthe new smoking,” she said. Asthe obesity epidemic continuesto grow, Prof. Meneley said shewanted to look at it from a non-medical point-of-view. In theIntroduction to Fat, she writesthat fat is not just a chemical orbiological fact. “It is also asupremely cultural fact.”

The idea for the book wasestablished in 2002. ProfessorsMeneley and Kulick were

Officially opened in 2005, theNozhem First Peoples PerformanceSpace is an exciting venue inwhich audience members can par-ticipate in an intimate relationshipwith the artists and performers.Unlike traditional western theatre,the space is used for ceremony, asa vessel to pour forth and nurtureIndigenous oral tradition, lan-guage and knowledge.

In 1969, Trent Universitybecame the first university inNorth America to establish anundergraduate program in Native

The book was published byPenguin (2005), which was a dif-ferent experience for Prof.Meneley, who is used to writingfor an academic press.

“Working with Penguin, theycut out so much jargon and repe-tition while still retaining thebasic argument,” she said. “It wasultimately a positive experience– it’s good to have that exposurewith the trade press.”

The book has received cover-age in the popular press as well.Fat was reviewed in major dailynewspapers such as the L.A.Times and the Toronto Star. Prof.Meneley also completed a series

of interviews on Fat for CBCRadio and appeared on TVOntario.

“People have responded posi-tively to it,” she said.

Prof. Meneley’s contribution tothe book began as a Social

interest and support for this outstanding place of learning.”

CORUS DONATES $200,000TO TRENT UNIVERSITY

Sciences and Humanities ResearchCouncil-funded project on theproduction, circulation and con-sumption of Italian extra-virginolive oil.

She said she chose to explorethe world of extra-virgin olive oilbecause it is considered a goodfat, it fits in with the Mediter-ranean diet and it’s also “sexy.”

“Many fish oils are veryhealthy but you can’t see themappearing on restaurant tables,”she said. “Olive oil has a divine,kind of sensual experience,attached to it.”

Adding to that experience,Tuscany (whose producers haverecently been the most successfulmarketers of extra-virgin olive oil)is often imagined or portrayed asa beautiful place where the onlycrises are food and drink.

Prof. Meneley now wants totake the project to the Middle Eastand look at Palestinian olive oilproducers in comparison withTuscan producers. She also plansto explore olive oil’s use in various religious traditions –Catholic, Orthodox, Judaism andIslam.

ENDOWMENT LANDS:ENRICHING CAMPUSLIFE

The Board of Governors hasbalanced the University’sbudget for the last three

years in a row but a cumulativedeficit of $6.198 million remains.Many priorities have been setaside because of a lack of funds.

The Endowment Lands will bea new revenue source for Trentthat will assist the University in anumber of areas.

“Obviously revenues will comefrom developments on endow-ment lands,” said Don O’Leary,vice-president (Administration).

“The idea would be to encour-age capital development on theendowment lands and the rev-enue could be used for capitalpurposes or it could go into theUniversity’s general revenues.”

Although it is still early to puta dollar figure on the revenuepotential of the endowment

lands, Mr. O’Leary said students,faculty and staff would all benefit.

“Everything we do here is tosupport the core mission of edu-cation. Revenues generated fromthe endowment lands wouldobviously help operations.”

Improved technology, newinfrastructure and more research

University’s core campus. Thoseproposals include campus architecture.

“The architectural features aresome of the guiding principles.When you get into the specifics ofdesign, we understand that needfor compatibility with what wehave here on campus.”

He also stressed that anydevelopment proposal onUniversity lands cannot compro-mise the University’s academicmission and its unique atmos-phere for teaching and research.

“The development of Trent’sEndowment Lands is a long-termprocess that will occur over manyyears,” said Mr. O’Leary.

The creation of theEndowment Lands Master Plan isa follow-up to a motion passed bythe Board of Governors in 1992directing administration to finalizea plan to develop the University’sEndowment Lands for the pur-pose of maximizing revenue tothe University.

Building on the planningframework provided in theCampus Master Plan, theEndowment Lands Master Planincludes a key recommendationto expand the Nature Areas to create buffers to protect NatureArea zones.

“This recommendation recog-nizes the unique value of theNature Areas among our landholdings,” said Mr. O’Leary. “The planning framework for theEndowment Lands is based onsolid land use principles in whichthe needs of the core campus willbe fully considered today and wellinto the future”.

The physical plan for theEndowment Lands identifies anumber of structuring principlesthat guide and shape the plan.These six principles include:

• A Natural Framework:The Endowment Lands shallbe characterized by a series of linked Nature Areas,Waterways and GreenCorridors

• A Lattice of PedestrianConnections: TheEndowment Lands shall contain a fine “Green Lattice”

Imagine a vibrant heartbeat forTrent University right onSymons Campus – a meeting

place that becomes a social hubfor students, faculty, staff or anyone connecting with Trent.

Combine an exceptionallearning environment withbreathtaking nature areas and rollit into a socially and culturallyrich campus milieu with all thenecessary amenities at yourdoorstep living space, stores andcafés coupled with green spaceand nature areas.

This is the vision for Trent’sEndowment Lands – areas ofcampus designated for future academic development.

Currently, there are 1,465acres of University land – the corecampus is about 175 acres, natureareas cover about 680 acres whilethe Endowment Lands cover 605acres. The three land uses weredetermined by the Senate andBoard of Governors in 1989-90. Itwas decided then that future useof the lands would by guided by policy and the University’s MasterPlan, which was last updated in 2001.

A draft report received onDecember 2, 2005 by Trent’sBoard of Governors maps out a long-term strategy for the development of the University’sEndowment Lands and a coordinated approach to futureland development.

• A Campus Greenbelt:The Endowment Lands shallform an Emerald Necklacethat protects and enhancesthe campus setting. Definedby the four major drumlins ofthe campus valley and linkedby Nature Areas, hedgerows,and open spaces, this green-belt of natural and manmadefeatures shall encircle thecampus and become thebackdrop of the University.

• Promote sustainable development

• Respect the unique Trent context and setting

• Protect the Nature Areas• Create high quality public

space and architecture

• Become a showcase of innovation

• Promote connectivity• Enhance the University• Establish and empower a

Development of the Endowment Lands shall be in accordance with the following draft principles.

• A Defined CampusPrecinct: The EndowmentLands shall clearly define apedestrian-oriented CampusPrecinct in keeping with theintentions of Ron Thom’soriginal plan and supportedin the updated Master Plan of2001.

• A Campus and RiverDesign Character: TheEndowment Lands shall pre-serve the unique character ofthe campus – as defined byits rural and natural settingand by its contemporaryarchitectural vision.

• A Ring of UniversityVillages: The EndowmentLands shall respond to theneed for revenue generationthrough the development of aseries of autonomous, manageable and distinctUniversity Villages.

The next steps in the processinclude the development of aseries of recommendations by the administration to the Board,including attaching priorities toparcels of property for immediateaction.

The finalization of theEndowment Lands Master Planreport followed an extensive con-sultation process that includedmeetings with student leaders,stakeholder interviews on campusand in the community, and openhouses.

One example of the potentialfor long-term, stable revenuestreams from the endowmentlands is the hydroelectric projectthe University has recentlyentered into with the Peterbor-ough Utilities Commission (PUC).

The PUC has signed a landlease with the University for Lock22 and 23. Hydroelectric powergenerated at the locks would beused by the PUC for the public’sgeneral consumption.

“It will provide revenue overthe long-term for the use of someour endowment lands,” said Mr.O’Leary. ❦

New Operational AgreementSigned by Trent/FlemingNursing Program

Faculty members and staff of theTrent/Fleming School of Nursinggathered to formally witness thesigning of an operational agree-ment between the two institutionson December 15, 2005.

The ultimate objective of theagreement is to further streamlinethe model for the highly success-ful integrated Bachelor of Sciencein Nursing program which is col-laboratively delivered by TrentUniversity and Fleming College.

The agreement, signed byProfessor Susan Clark, vice-presi-dent academic at Trent Universityand Rachel Donovan, vice-presi-dent academic at Fleming College,was completed by a Task ForceGroup made up of members ofboth institutions. The documentstands as both an operationaltext and a symbol of cooperationand good faith between Trentand Fleming.

Key Performance IndicatorsShow Good News for Trent

At the December Board ofGovernors’ meeting, backgroundinformation was presented on theUniversity’s Key PerformanceIndicators. Christopher Michael,coordinator of institutionalresearch and planning, presentedhighlights employment rates,tenured faculty teaching first-yearclasses, class sizes and more. Thereport indicated that Trent gradsare excelling in the labour market.

Four out of every five surveyrespondents indicated that theyhad found a job related to theirfield of study. As part of itsaccountability process, theUniversity presents a set ofnumerical measures to the Boardand Senate each year that reflectsthe University’s statement of mission, goals and institutionalobjectives. Trent University’s Board ofGovernors was pleased toannounce the appointment of Mr.John H. Ilkiw as a new member ofthe Board in December.

Mr. Illkiw is the Vice-President,Research and Risk Management,for the Canada Pension PlanInvestment Board. A charteredFinancial Analyst, he previouslyserved as Senior Consultant andDirector for the RussellInvestment Group, and in posi-tions with William M. MercerLimited, and the Ministry ofTreasury and Economics.

The Board was also pleased toannounce in December theappointment of former Boardmembers as honorary governors:Ana Lopes (Toronto), CecilRabinovitch (Montreal), and TedTremain (Toronto).

On the heels of that announce-ment, Trent was saddened tolearn of the death of Mr. Tremainon December 24, 2005. “In everyway, Ted was truly a friend of theUniversity,” said PresidentPatterson. “He led by example asa highly active Board member, aleader in fundraising, and a con-sistent supporter of Trent’s uniquemission.” Mr. Tremain was deputychair of Trent’s most successfulcapital campaign to date, the$17.2 million Beyond Our Wallscampaign.

In a stunning display of danceand drama choreographed withmulti-media, the IndigenousContemporary Repertory Danceclass showcased their knowledgeof contemporary dance gainedand incorporated with NativeAmerican Intertribal dance stylesin Anishnaabe Maanjiidwin II.
