Answering God’s Call to Service

Thank you, Paul Karl, Rosanne Glock and Dennis Grindle. A grateful congregation thanks you for your service to Pacific Hills. Roseanne and Dennis recently completed their terms on our Board of Directors. Roseanne previously served as president of our congregation, and Dennis just completed a term as director at large. Paul’s service on the board continues, although his two-year term as president of our congregation just ended.

When Rosanne, Dennis and Paul, along with the current members of our board and our committees, were asked to serve, they could have declined. After all, we live in busy times and we know that the Bible is full of examples of heroes of faith – Jonah and Moses come to mind – who initially evaded God’s call to ser-vice. We also know how those stories turned out. God has promised to guide and bless those He calls. In John 15:16, Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit – fruit that will last – and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” In Roman 8:28, we learn, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

I am confident that bright times lie ahead for Pacific Hills and its mem-bers. Yes, we faced some challenges, but by God’s grace we persevered. We know God has a purpose for us – all of us – to carry out his Great Commission. Serving your God and your congregation doesn’t have to mean serving on a Pa-cific Hills board or committee, but it could. Serving comes with getting involved and our congregation offers many ways to do so. Rosanne, Dennis and Paul discovered their ways to serve their Lord and their congregation. I encourage you to find yours.

Your Servant in Christ,

Kevin Warneke, President

Today’s altar flowers are given to the glory of God by Linda Minor in celebration of Luetta Beckman’s birthday. Severe Weather Cancellation Policy for Pacific Hills Lutheran Child, Youth, and Adult Education Programs: During bad weather conditions, monitor the TV or radio school closing listings. If it is announced that Omaha Public Schools day or evening classes/activities are canceled due to weather, the education programs at Pacific Hills will also be canceled. Pacific Hills will not be listed in the closings and you will not be personally notified. This policy does not apply to worship services. Use your good judgment to stay safe. If classes and activities are not officially canceled but you feel conditions are unsafe, please do not feel compelled to attend.

Social Ministry Notes: • Winter has arrived! There is a great need for "Winter

Woolies"- hats, gloves, scarfs, warm socks for men, women, and children. Place new or gently used items in the bin in the narthex during January and February. They will be delivered to area homeless shelters.

• Diaper Drive in January Can you help fill the bin with diapers and baby wipes for EPS (Essential Pregnancy Services)? The agency provides valuable services to women in need in our community.

The 2017 Sunday Altar Flower Chart is located on the coatroom bulletin board. Cost to sponsor a Sunday is $25. If you need to receive gluten-free communion wafers or alcohol-free wine, contact pastor, an elder, or an usher, for Sunday and Wednesday communion (and visitation to shut-ins).

Beginning Sunday, February 5, we will be offering both individual and common cup during communion at each of our Eucharist services. The procedure will be as follows: We will commune in tables as we do now. Instead of one Elder on each side, both will follow the pastor. Pastor will go first to distribute the bread and offer blessings to the children. The first Elder will follow with the tray of individual cups. If this is your choice, take one. The second Elder will follow the first with the chalice. He will offer it to those who do not have an individual cup and will also dismiss the table when done. As always, the ushers will be at the side to collect the individual cups. 500th Anniversary Reformation Tour --- Pastor Drebes will be leading a tour to Germany over the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. The tour will depart on October 24, 2017, and return on November 4, 2017. In preparation for this tour Pastor spent several days in Germany with a dozen pastors from across the country in the fall of 2015. Brochures are available in the church office.
