TISS has been involved in addressing disasters since the 1947 partition. The

Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies student and faculty interventions during Latur,

Assam Riots and Uttarakhand Floods are a demonstration of our interest in understanding the

ground realities of society.

Our Masters programme in Disaster Management is the rst of its kind in the country. This is offered as a Master of Science as well as Master of Arts programme so that students from various disciplines can join the course. The faculty hails from various disciplines and admits about 40 students every academic year.

Recently the school was involved in organizing a disaster preparedness work in Delhi as well as looking at how to address disasters across the border in Nepal. This was quite helpful because as soon as the Nepal earthquake happened, our students and faculty were able to quickly move in and be a part of the relief and rehabilitation framework. We are also continuing the work in Phase two reconstruction.

Our students of Disaster Management have always shown interest in working with various Government agencies/authorities, Multilateral agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Corporates. The batch of 2016-18 will graduate in early May 2018, and we are proud to present graduates for placement in your organization.

The Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies (JTSDS) was conceived in 2006 and was established with a generous grant from the Jamsetji Tata Trust, consolidating six decades of TISS 's extensive work on post disaster interventions, social development, research and teaching. The Masters' programme in Disaster Management is offered since 2007 along with several other certicate and diploma programmes. The courses are multidisciplinary and the curriculum is a unique blend of science and technology and their intersection with human societies and cultures. The programme offers several concentrations- disaster logistics, conict, GIS, and so on. Students are expected to choose any one. Field education over 3 semesters, prepares students for the world of work.Intersectionalities between development processes, climate change and disasters constitute the broad framework for the Masters' programme.

Values of social and environmental justice have been central to the work of the School and the Masters' programme is located within these very values. Much of our work is concerned with people's experiences of marginalization and distress both in pre and post disaster situations.

As the School completes 10 years of its establishment the decade long journey has seen rich contributions and collective learning. In the Masters' programme students learn that the very idea of disaster lends itself to multiple interpretations. Actors operate with diverse orientations and aligning these can pose operational challenges. Issues of governance and context need to be grappled with in disaster response and recovery. Since domain knowledge is expanding exponentially, it is not possible to include all of it within a two years Masters' programme. However, we are condent that our students will be quick learners since they are procient in “learning to learn”! We do hope that the graduating students, as they get selected, will become a valuable resource to your organization.

The Masters Programme enrolls students from diverse disciplines and from various parts of the country and has also had international students from Greece, Mexico, Ireland, Germany and on. Our students will evince mutual respect, team work and many of them would become future leaders in the eld of disaster studies.

We welcome you to our campus to choose those who may be best suited for your organization and also look forward to your feedback and experience as we forge a meaningful relationship with each passing year.

Disaster Studies is emerging globally as a full-fledged academic discipline and the decade long journey of JTSDS has pioneered disaster education in India. The field practice demands specialisation to meet the needs created by changing dynamics of the world and increasing frequency as well as magnitude of disaster events. The centre was established in 2006 and offered its first Full-Time Masters' Program in 2007. In 2015, it became a School with three Centres viz. Centre for Disasters and Development, Centre for Disaster Management & Centre for Geo Informatics.

JTSDS endeavours to cater to the trans-disciplinary demand of the field with a focus on community centred participatory approaches towards disaster risk reduction & management, disaster response & rehabilitation and disaster governance & policy making. JTSDS works in close coordination and collaboration with the state, civil society and like-minded private actors on issues of development, social justice, vulnerability, resilience building, inclusion, empowerment and community centred practices for its academic and real-time on ground engagements. The school has built several partnerships with the pioneers of disaster field such as IFRC, UNDP, UNISDR, NDMA etc. in national as well as international arena.

The school aims at contributing to the mainstreaming of the disaster discourse in developmental paradigm though its quality educational programmes, research and extension services based on values of social, economic and political justice. It further aims at fostering critical thinking in the field of disaster management through creation of dynamic professionals via its two-year Master's programme, who understands the social, cultural, economic, political and environmental nitty-gritties of the field.
